THE UNINVITEDPOSTER ANALYSIS

Page 2: the uninvited

Connotation – there is a person who is looking through

a window but there face is covered. In the background

there are trees.

Denotation – the face of the model is covered which has been done to create enigma, it keeps

the audience wondering who the person is and what they look like. There are a numerous

amount of trees in the background which may suggest

that the main plot of the film will be in a forest, this creates a

isolated atmosphere as a forest is empty.

Colours – the main colours for this poster are white, black

and grey. By using contrasting colours it allows the poster to

stand out more. The colour black suggest mystery and is a conventional colour which is

associated with a horror genre as it dark and secretive. The colours white and grey are light colour which I think is

used to create suspicion as it is a “joyful” colour so the

audience will not know the full genre of the film. The

poster is mainly dull, this has been done to create a enigmatic atmosphere.

Mise-en-scene –the overall mise-en-scene of this poster

conveys a perfect horror poster. For the models the

lighting is dull, this has resulted in the models face to be black; this is a successful

way in attracting the audience as they will instantly wonder

what the motives of that person is. Overall the lighting for this poster in contrasting

as the background of the image is bright whereas the

model is dull and dark, a contrast help the poster to

look more visually appealing.

Main image – the main image is from the waist up, this has been done to show the body language of the model. You can see the model looking through a window with her

hands and head touching the window, this may refer to “the uninvited” as she is trying to

get a glimpse of what is inside as she isn’t allowed inside, by

doing this the director is creating questions in the

audience mind about why she isn’t inside instead of looking

through a window.

Typeface/ Text –

The text for the masthead is in white allowing it to stand out against the black and grey. Also the masthead is the largest text

on the poster which is conventionally done so the audience know the name of the film straight away. The text of the

masthead looks slightly childish which may indicate that the model is a child, by having the text like this it makes the it seem

more real instead of a simple font.

The tagline “Fear moves in” plays a key role as it is links in with the films name as something “uninvited” is moving in, by doing this it give the audience a small glimpse of the film which will be something to do with getting rid of someone. Also the tagline is short and simple which is a benefit as it will stick in the audience mind more a longer period of time. “From the producers of the ring and disturbia” by adding this(previous credit) it encourages

the audience who have seen those films to go and watch this film as they will expect the film to be similar. Finally by adding “January” it will excite the audience towards the release date.

The credits are in the smallest text, this is as it is the least important text on the whole poster.

Over all the typeface for this poster conveys horror as it is an unusual font which is typically seen on an horror poster.

Target audience/ Genre – the target audience for this film are young adults aged 15+ who like to watch horror films. The sub-

genre for this film would be a mysterious horror due to the enigmatic image as it doesn't allow the audience to know much

about the character in the film, also the colours create a unpleasant atmosphere as again it doesn't give the audience

much information about the film.

Release date

Rule of thirds has been challenged on this poster as

there is only limited amount of hint about the film given away about the film, on the left third the main part is of the models

arms and a third of the window. All of this will create a suspicion

in the audience mind about what the model is doing and

why she is doing.

The reason conventions have been challenged is because the

enigmatic image and the previous credit the audience will

be interested in watching the film.
