Welcome to our ninth annual Best of Nevada County publication. What a unique opportunity to recognize the people, businesses and places in our community who make it a wonderful place to live, work and play!

For several days in January, we printed our Best of Nevada County ballot in the newspaper asking you — our loyal readers — to tell us your favorites. To ensure the integrity of the voting process, ballots were sealed, sent to a contracted company and tabulated off-site. Duplicates, reproductions and other ballots not meeting the strict published criteria were excluded. To further authenticate the voting process, we changed the way ballots were made available, by not offering them online, as a result of an infl ux of “stuffed” ballots in the past.

This year, the responses grew exponentially. As our county has fl ourished, so has community interest and the title of “The Best” has become increasingly competitive. Although we do have some repeat winners, we would like to welcome those who have risen to the top for the fi rst time! Each recipient contributes to the charm of our community.

We would like to thank our readers and advertisers for making this edition possible and for being paramount to its success.

Tess’ Kitchen Store continues a long tradition in downtown Grass Valley, dating back to 1931, when Tess Hocking

opened the Golden Poppy at 145 Mill Street. In the early 1950s, Robert Hocking changed the name of the store to Tess’ Gift Shop in honor of his mother. Throughout the years, Tess’ ownership and product mix has changed, but the owners all kept the name, “Tess.” In 1996, Rita Burns, the current owner of Tess’, purchased Tess’ Gift and Card Shop.

Rita operated Tess’ for a couple years as a gift and card shop and then, in response to changing times, began increasing its “houseware” products. By the beginning of the year 2000, Tess’ had transformed into a first-class kitchen store and its name was changed to Tess’ Kitchen Store. Tess’ has thrived as a kitchen store, carrying most major brand name products of cookware, bakeware, cutlery and kitchen electrics, and has over 1,000 different gadgets and utensils.

In October 2007, Tess’ moved a few doors down to its present location at 153 Mill Street. In late 2008, Tess’ wedding registry was revitalized by going online. Couples may now register for their wedding at Tess’ and their guests can purchase online from any

location at any time. Tess’ Kitchen Store has been voted “Best Kitchen Store in

Nevada County” for the past five consecutive years. It was also chosen 2008 Business of the Year by the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce. Tess’ prides itself on its customer service, having a extraordinarily knowledgeable, friendly and helpful sales staff. Its quality products are reasonably and competitively priced.

Open daily 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Sundays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also open and participating in any and all downtown events. Look for Tess’ product demonstrations in front of the store at the Thursday night markets. Saturdays afternoons are also an opportunity for Tess’ to do knife sharpenings and demonstrations. Moule Paint & Glass has been voted “Best Glass and Window Shop” by the readers of The Union for the past five years,

however the glass shop has been attempting to repay a 50-year-old debt that can never be fully repaid to a community with more heart than it can imagine.

Bill and Margaret Moule started the business in April of 1949 on a shoe string and a prayer with Margaret expecting their sixth child. By 1959 they had 11 children, the business was finally starting to show a profit and Bill had finally had his book, “God’s Arms Around Us,” published, detailing the families experiences in the Philippines before and during World War II, hiding from the Japanese for 13 months and being in a concentration camp for two years.

In August 1959 a fire completely destroyed Moule Paint and Glass and there was no insurance to cover the loss. That’s when a miracle happened in Nevada County. When word got out of the Moule’s predicament, the community came out and as groups and individuals helped clear away the charred mess and built a small wood framed structure, in which, Moule Paint

As they did in 2005 and 2006, the readers of The Union voted Plan It Solar the Best Solar Company for 2008, awarding them

the distinction three out of the past four years in a county already well known for its solar expertise. For regular readers, it was hard not to notice Plan It Solar’s name in the news last year as they worked with prominent local developers, businesses, churches, and governments to install the largest solar systems in Nevada County to date. Some highlights:

• In April, they put the finishing touches on a solar system atop the new building at Union and Broad streets in downtown Nevada City, now the largest PV system in Nevada County and quietly powering the new District Attorney’s office.

• In June, First Baptist Church had Plan It Solar install what is now the third largest PV system in the county, visible from Ridge Road directly across from Nevada Union High School.

• Fast-forward to September and The Union published stories on Hills Flat Lumber’s large solar installation at their new Grass Valley store, the second largest system in the county by only 40 watts.

• In October, Plan It Solar worked with Nevada City to install three city-owned solar electric systems at City Hall, Pioneer Park and City Yard.

• To cap off the year, December state data showed Plan It Solar installed more home PV systems in Nevada County last year than all other local companies combined.

In addition to designing and installing solar systems, Plan It Solar spent a large part of 2008 educating the community on the overall benefits of solar power. Their outreach includes donating an Internet-based monitoring program for a large system they installed at Union Hill School and a smaller system installed at The Imaginarium. With these informational tools, the Union Hill installation will be a part of the school’s science curriculum for years to come.
