The following two features are key to lean production

• Less waste• Greater efficiency

There are endless ways to go about implementing a ‘leaner’ system of

productionThe main ways are outlined

in Unit 5.4 of Loykie (page 352 to 364).

We will now look at one particular one you will use in your Project : KANBAN

Page 8: The United States Department of Agriculture defines an extra-lean cut of beef as a one that has a maximum of 5% fat Not so Lean (Prime) Lean Extra Lean

This guy says :“Kanban is a lean SCHEDULING SYSTEM .. which uses visual cues to indicate what to produce, how much to produce – and when to produce it.”

Kanban was first introduced and used by

Japanese car firm Toyota

The first 2.30m are best – after that he starts talking about how Kanban and Scrum (?!) can work together

P356 on Loykie for a short alternative explanation

This guy shows us how to create a Kanban Chart. In this case he puts his ‘stories’ ie the tags with the details on them, the visual cues – on a Chart on a wall. While all methods will use story tags, they wont all put them on a Chart on the wall.

The difference between ‘Backlog’ and ‘To do’ is …

Backlog means its an task/project we have that needs doing at some point, while To

Do means we want to get started on it now/soon.

An normal firm will always have stories on this chart. Some will move along right-

wards and then off as they are completed. New ones will replace them on the Backlog

column. For your Project, by the end, you chart

should have 3 empty columns and 1 full one.

A little bit complicated. Uses the brains nervous system, traffic lights and a tight (pull) and loose (push) chain to explain

A Manager explaining how they use Kanban in their factory. We don’t know exactly what the product is that they manufacture but his explanation is quite clear.

Simple but effective explanation

Similar to above, but includes the ‘Supply Card’ version of Kanban
