The universal post-processor for finite element structural simulations

For more than 25 years the Animator pro-gram has been an indispensable part of the world of finite element structural sim-ulation. As a post-processor for various solvers and simulation areas, Animator shapes the workflows in the calculation departments of the global automotive and consumer goods industry right from the start. Thousands of users provide to the software a continuous flow of new ideas from many areas of application. Today, the fourth generation of the program, Ani-mator4, is being used.

Video overlay

The comparison of simulations and hard-ware tests is a central task in the field of crash simulation. Supporting various video formats, Animator4 offers the pos-sibility of importing videos of the tests and comparing them directly with the simula-tion results in one single display. Differ-ent methods make it possible to transfer moving or fixed camera positions to the simulation model.

Furthermore, additional information from the test environment can be integrated into the Animator work within the frame-work of the ISO MME standard.

Tcl/TK Scripting

Using Animator4, a simple session file language can be used to automate re-curring workflows. The complete process environment is covered with the opening and closing of dialog, the definition of groups and colors and the installation of interactive elements, as well as the selec-tion of simulation objects. If more complex program structures are required, for example loops or decisions, the Tcl interpreter integrated within Ani-mator4 can be utilized. This interpreter provides the entire Tcl language range. In addition, various Tcl libraries are supplied in the basic installation e. g. in order to al-low graphical interfaces or to handle XML data directly in the Tcl scripts.

Database4/FEMZIP

Animator4 uses its own file format for stor-ing and archiving the work results.

The Animator Database allows you to write a complete Animator4 session, in-cluding all data, into one file. Once re-opened, the file restarts at the point where the work was saved. A FEMZIP version for the Animator Database was developed in cooperation with the Sidact company.

FEMZIP makes it possible to reduce the data volume by approx. 90% using lossy compression methods.

This has advantages with respect to stor-age media and data transfer. In globally distributed development teams, the re-sults can be evaluated faster and more cost-effectively at different locations.

Interfaces

Animator4 provides a large number of in-terfaces to the most common commercial FEM codes. Data from all the supported formats can be read directly into Anima-tor4; conversion into an intermediate for-mat is not necessary.

Animator4 offers further interfaces to var-ious measurement systems, e.g. data from GOM‘s measurement systems can be read directly via a specially developed format.

Development partnerships with various software manufacturers ensure updates and adaptations to new format versions within the shortest possible time.

Speed and memory consumption

A major development goal of Animator4 since the beginning has been maximiz-ing graphics performance and minimizing memory usage. Even for extremely large models Animator4 guarantuees fluent an-imations on modern workstations.

The graphics cards integrated in modern mobile computers are also used by the program development team for regular comparison tests to provide those users who work with notebooks with a suitable tool.

NVH

The NVH area has been greatly enhanced in the latest versions of Animator4. A specialized in-terface with a problem-facing user guidance helps the engineer to evaluate selected curves. The next development step is the integration of complex curves as mathematical objects in Anima-tor4. This will simplify the work with curves from the acoustic simulation and reduce the size of imported data with the same physical content by 50%.

Presentations

The results of simulations and evaluations performed by the engineer can be incor-porated directly into a presentation in Ani-mator4. The integrated presentation mod-ule provides many basic text and drawing tools for the professional preparation of data.

With the full-screen mode of Animator, even 3D objects can be integrated into a presentation. Furthermore, the original data in curve or model objects can be ac-cessed at any time.

The Animator4 presentation can, of course, be exported into a PDF file or a PowerPoint document.

In connection with the scripting functions it is possible to generate standard eval-uations, which reliably generate defined views, curves and tables for various sim-ulations and thus enable standardized evaluations of the simulations.

The Company

GNS has been active in the field of com-puter-aided simulation since 1994. The main business areas of the company in-clude calculation services and the related software development.

The calculation services focus on crash simulation, numerical calculations for statics, strength and vibration behavior of structures as well as numerical simu-lation of forming and manufacturing pro-cesses. Our service customers are mainly companies in the automotive and aviation industries, as well as in mechanical engi-neering.

Based on the experience gained from the calculation services, GNS developed the software products Animator4, Gen-erator4, OFSolv and OpenForm. With thousands of licenses sold worldwide, Animator4 is one of the most successful post-processors in the field of finite ele-ment structural simulation. The close and trustful cooperation with our clients and a focus on maximizing performance is always central to our efforts. Many well-known companies worldwide are among the multitudes of satisfied customers of our services and products.
