Publications Now University Communications Design

Publications and Graphics Services, which creates the visual identity for projects ranging from the "Genera­tions" campaign to posters for confer­ences held on campus, is changing its name. The new name, University Communications Design, more accu­rately reflects the purpose and activi­ties of the group, headed by Carl Magel.

Academic Apparel Rental

Measurements for academic apparel for the May 2001 Commencement Ex­ercises will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, April17 and 18, ONLY from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore in the Eck Cen­ter. The rental of a doctoral cap, gown, and hood is $35. Faculty who received a Ph.D. or law degree from Notre Dame may rent the Notre Dame doc­toral cap, gown, and hood. The rental fee is $90. The rental of a cap, gown, and hood for the master's degree is $34.

Erica Cain-Ward, assistant professional specialist in the College of Engineering, has been appointed director of the Mi­nority Engineering Program.

Honors

Harvey Bender, professor ofbiological sciences, and Todd Whitmore, associ­ate professor of theology and fellow in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Interna­tional Peace Studies, have been named Carnegie Scholars, a distinction that an­nually honors 30 university-level teach­ers whose work will advance the profes­sion of teaching and deepen student learning.

Kwan S. Kim, professor of economics and fellow in the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, has been named to the editorial board of the Inter­nationalJoumal of Development Planning Literature, a quarterly journal of the Jan Tinbergen Institute of Development Planning.

Robin F. Rhodes, associate professor of art, art history, and design, has been named the Frederic Lindley Morgan Chair of Architectural Design at the Allen R. Hite Art Institute, Univ. of Lou­isville, for the spring semester 2003. He has also been elected to the Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

B.F. Spencer, Jr., Leo E. and Patti Ruth Lin beck Professor of Engineering, was appointed to the international scientific committee for the International Confer­ence on Advances in Building Technol­ogy, to be held December 4-6, 2002, Hong Kong.

Walter Langford, 1930 graduate, pro­fessor, chair of the Modern Languages Department, and longtime coach of the University varsity tennis and fencing teams, died Feb. 28 in St. Louis. He re­ceived the Lay Faculty Award in 1959 and a Presidential Citation in 1973.
