The University of Arizona Bands – Directors

DR. CHAD R. NICHOLSON, Director of Bands at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music, serves as the conductor of the University of Arizona Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds. Additionally, he oversees the entire wind band program and instructs undergraduate and graduate wind conducting students. Dr. Nicholson’s experiences as a music educator span all ages and ensemble types. He has conducted many All-State and honor groups around the world. Nicholson is a Chief Guest Conductor of the Beijing Wind Orchestra, China’s first professional wind ensemble. He has been an adjudicator for the All-Chinese Wind Band Contest and has conducted groups in Tokyo, Taipei, and Shanghai. Nicholson has worked with ensembles from New York’s Carnegie Hall to the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Dr. Nicholson authored a book designed to aid conductors in repertoire selection and concert programming titled Great Music for Wind Band, and a newly translated edition of this book will soon be released for directors in East Asia. He is a contributing author for the recently published sourcebook for music educators, Engaging Musical Practices, and he has written articles for eight volumes of Teaching Music through Performance in Band. In conjunction with Forward Motion, Nicholson recently produced a new video series of online masterclasses, called Pro Tips for Band Directors, that provide in-depth score study, conducting, and rehearsal ideas for wind band masterworks. Nicholson is a frequent presenter and performer at regional, national, and international conferences. In 2020, he was the featured guest conductor in Tokyo at the 2020 ASIJ Wind Band Festival. Dr. Nicholson led ensembles at the Taiwan International Band Clinic and at several College Band Director National Association Divisional Conferences. Nicholson has been a featured presenter at the National Association for Music Education Conference in Texas and has presented twice at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Before his appointment at the University of Arizona, Dr. Nicholson served on the faculties at the University of Delaware, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, and Colorado State University. He was a public school teacher in Oregon and Oklahoma. His primary conducting mentors include William Wakefield, Ken Van Winkle, Stephen W. Pratt and Ray E. Cramer. Nicholson holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma (BME), New Mexico State University (MM), and Indiana University (DM).

CHAD SHOOPMAN is the associate director of bands and director of athletic bands at the University of Arizona. His duties include conducting the UA Wind Symphony, directing The Pride of Arizona Marching Band and Pep Band, as well as teaching leadership and marching band techniques courses. A proud alumnus, Shoopman earned both his Bachelor of Music degree in music education (1996) and Master of Music degree in conducting performance (1999) at the University of Arizona. While at UA, he studied conducting with Gregg I. Hanson. He continued studying choral and orchestral conducting with Dr. John Sinclair at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Prior to his current appointment, Shoopman was a distinguished adjunct faculty member at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida where he taught film music history, trumpet, and conducting. He worked for the Walt Disney World Company conducting and performing on countless multi-million dollar studio projects for Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Disney Cruise Lines. He also worked as a conductor, performer, arranger, and choreographer for live shows seen by millions of guests throughout Walt Disney World including FutureCorps, Tomorrowland Countdown, Main Street Philharmonic, and Disney’s Candlelight Processional. As the most requested clinician for Disney Performing Arts (formerly Magic Music Days), he was honored to lead thousands of educational workshops for middle school, high school, and college bands and orchestras from all over the world. In 2010, Shoopman was appointed music director and conductor of the Brass Band of Central Florida. Under his baton, the BBCF won a national championship, recorded three albums, and earned the ranking of 13th best brass band in the world; the highest placement any band outside of Great Britain has ever achieved. He was known for innovative show designs and arrangements that appealed to a wide range of audiences while still maintaining artistic integrity in the ever-growing American brass band movement. Professor Shoopman has enjoyed numerous guest-conducting, adjudication, and clinic appointments in the United States, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, Germany, France, and Australia. He is an active orchestral conductor, appearing with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Florida Symphony Orchestra, and the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted various musical theater productions including “Shrek The Musical” & “The Pajama Game”, and is recognized for being equally comfortable conducting a wide variety of musical styles and ensembles. He has appeared regularly as lead trumpet for Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Arturo Sandoval’s LA All- Star Big Band, Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge, and the hr- Big Band in Frankfurt, Germany, as well as symphony orchestras throughout the United States.

THE 2021 “PRIDE OF ARIZONA” MARCHING BANDpresents

The Music of Panic! At The DiscoPanic! At The Disco was formed in 2004 in the suburban area of Summerlin, Las Vegas, and was initially a Blink-182 cover band. While the band’s sound and style have changed dramatically over the years, the majority of today’s show features music from the albums Death of A Bachelor (2016) and Pray for the Wicked (2018) both of which feature a charismatic, cross-pollinated brand of pop rock characterized by lead singer/songwriter, Brandon Urie’s soaring vocals. Panic! At The Disco has scored 6 chart topping albums and entertained fans all over the world. The Pride of Arizona dedicates this show and the entire season to our drumline staff member and friend Nick Knepper.

Into The Unknown/Victorious (2019/2015)‘Into The Unknown’ is the hit song from Disney’s Frozen 2 and is a soaring power ballad reminiscent of ‘Let It Go’ from the first Frozen film. The cover version of the song performed by Panic! At The Disco is about literally venturing into the unknown and lead singer, Brendon Urie’s vocals are the perfect match for the huge, operatic notes in the chorus. ‘Victorious’ was released as the second single from Panic’s fifth studio album, Death of a Bachelor spending time on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart with the music video receiving more than 76 million views as of August 2021.

Death Of A Bachelor (2015)The title track from Panic’s fifth studio album was described by vocalist Brendon Urie in the following quote: “Frank Sinatra turns 100 this year. I attach his music to so many memories: Opening presents on Christmas day, my grandparents teaching the rest of the family to swing dance...his music has been a major player in the soundtrack of my life. So it’s only right that I return the favor and/or pay it forward. I wrote a new album this year and even in the few songs that don’t sound remotely similar to any of his music I still felt his influence in the writing and the need to relate so personally to each song. ‘Death Of A Bachelor’ is very important to me. It expresses the bittersweet (but mostly sweet) end of an era. A look back at a part of my life now deceased. An ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’-esque look into a possibly different future. But mostly an appreciation for the present.” The Pride proudly features soloist Baron Turner on sousaphone, and trumpet soloist Victor Sinohui.

Crazy = Genius (2016)“Crazy=Genius” was written in a style reminiscent of classic big band swing a la the classic Louis Prima hit, “Sing, Sing, Sing”. Lyrically, the song makes references to select members of the rock band The Beach Boys, as Urie sings “She said you’re just like Mike Love / But you wanna be Brian Wilson, Brian Wilson” and “She said you’re just like Mike Love / But you’ll never be Dennis Wilson.” This is likely a reference to Brian being the “crazy genius” behind the Beach Boys’ success, as he suffers from schizoaffective disorder and was the brain behind the band’s greatest achievements. Mike Love on the other hand, was known to be against Wilson’s innovative sounds and was always one to stick to “the formula”. The song’s big band swing-style elements set the perfect stage to feature the Pride of Arizona Drumline. For Nick.

High Hopes/Into The Unknown (2018/2019)‘High Hopes’ is the second single from Panic’s sixth studio album, Pray for the Wicked, which peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band’s highest-charting song. It holds the record for most weeks spent at number one on the US Hot Rock Songs chart, at 65 weeks. ‘Into The Unknown’ returns to bring the Pride of Arizona’s 2021 show to an exciting close.

THE 2021 PRIDE OF ARIZONA SHOWThis year’s band day show is about the importance of remaining grateful, positive, and hopeful in the face of the significant challenges of a global pandemic. We realized family, friends, activities, and events that we perhaps took for granted could be taken from us in an instant. Today’s show aspires to lift the weight of the past year and a half and present a hopeful view of the future where we all take the opportunity to truly appreciate our blessings and be grateful for moments big and small that make our lives meaningful. The Pride of Arizona would like to dedicate our show to two incredible people we lost this year. Nick Knepper and Enrique Feldman, thank you for enriching our lives, making the world a better place, and for helping shape the Pride of Arizona past, present, and future.
