8. TEACHING

(a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments Since joining the faculty at UBC, I have been active in both undergraduate and graduate

teaching, and I was honoured to receive a Killam Teaching Prize in 2003. I have served as Graduate Advisor for our department, helped to organize a graduate student conference, and co-authored many publications with my graduate students. While my primary commitment is to students at UBC, I have responded positively to students and teachers in many parts of the world, who have invited me to participate in their learning communities (See CV for Visiting Positions, Invited Presentations, and Plenary/Keynote talks). As Teaching Issues Editor of the TESOL Quarterly for 14 years (1994-2007), I took the opportunity to raise the profile of much innovative teaching in the international community. I have also organized many UBC visits from international scholars, including three year-long Visiting Scholars from Brazil, China, and Japan. Further, in my capacity as co-convenor of the Africa Research Network on Applied Linguistics and Literacy, I have worked with my graduate student Lauryn Oates to develop and maintain a website to help promote teaching and research in Africa (see www.renafrica.org).

9. SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

(a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments Because I am in a department of language and literacy education, which has an interdisciplinary focus, I have been able pursue diverse research interests, including language learning, literacy and international development, popular culture, and language assessment (see www.lerc.educ.ubc.ca/fac/norton). The common thread in this research is my passionate interest in language, identity, and social change. I have been privileged to receive recognition from the international community, which has recognized my work through competitive awards (see CV section 12), and by UBC, which has appointed me a Distinguished University Scholar (2004-2008). Two journal special issues have been based on my work: one in Japan (JALT Journal on Identity and Language Learning, 2002) and one in China (Journal of Asian Pacific Communication, in press). I am currently a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in the Department of

Education at King’s College, University of London (2007-2010), and an Honorary Professor in the School of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa (2007-2010), where I am collaborating on the development of an Africa Research Network on Applied Linguistics and Literacy (see www.renafrica.org).
