Summer Discovery staff make all medical appointments, accompany students tomedical facilities, obtain prescription medications, and notify parents after medicalvisits. Appointments are made with Peak Health Medical Group or the UCLAMedical Center.

TransportationWe provide escorted transfers from/to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for$75 each way. Staff meet incoming flights in baggage claim (or outside of customsfor international flights) and assist with all departures.

Classrooms, athletic facilities, and the village of Westwood are a short walk fromour residence hall. Passenger vans are used for field trips, small excursions, andmedical transport. Chartered buses are used for large group excursions.

Food For ThoughtStudents enjoy unlimited portions in Rieber dining hall, and receive 3 meals a day (2 on weekends) while on campus. Included daily is a choice of nutritious entrees, low-fat and vegetarian selections, hot breakfast, salad bar, deli bar, pizzaoven, fresh fruit, beverages, and a wide selection of desserts.

College Cre Credit Cedit CouroursesessSummer Discovery partners with UCLA Summer Sessionsto offer college credit courses during the 6 week program.Courses are taught by UCLA professors and visiting faculty and meet 2-5 times weekly for 1-2½ hours. Students will be in class with UCLA freshmen. Course sizes vary from small seminars to large lectures.

Most courses have papers, midterms, and/or finals andare graded on the traditional A, B, C, D, and F system. Pass/No Pass grading is also offered. Students will be assessed a $50 document fee for unlimited official transcripts, which are available from UCLA upon request.

Students earn 4 or 5 credit units for each collegecredit course at UCLA. Tuition includes one collegecredit course. If you choose to take 2 collegecredit courses, there will be a fee for the additionalcredits of $500 for a 4 unit course or $800 for a 5unit course. Fees are non-refundable. Credits aretransferable to most colleges and universities in theUnited States.

Enrichment Chment CouroursesessSummer Discovery partners with UCLA Cultural andRecreational Affairs to offer enrichment courses,exclusively for our students. These courses are taught

by UCLA faculty, graduate teaching instructors,and top secondary school teachers and meet 4times weekly for 1½-2 hours. Course sizes averagebetween 8-20 students.

Enrichment courses are a great way for you to learnsomething interesting and develop new skills. Mostcourses have homework, papers, and/or tests.Courses are graded Pass/No Pass. Students receivea Summer Discovery “Certificate of Completion” atthe end of the program.

Week one: Leadership DevelopmentThe Bruin Leaders Project (BLP) is UCLA’snationally renowned campus-sponsored leadership development program. It is a hands-on program that strives to make participants better students, leaders, and citizens. The seminars cover a wide range of topics, from public speaking to conflict resolution, and diversity to communication skills.

Week two: (choose one)Leadership through ServiceMake a difference in your community and earn up to14 hours of community service. Explore the importanceof leadership in service as you transition theories of leadership into actions. Service opportunities may include preparing and serving a meal for the families staying at the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House, or working with other organizations.

Entrepreneurship LeadershipExplore the role that visionary leadership plays in someof the most successful recent entrepreneur endeavors.Bill Gates and Steve Jobs put a computer in everyhome. Mark Zuckerberg revolutionized how peoplesocialize with his vision of Facebook. Examine case

studies on some of the most influential entrepreneurs’strategies, initiatives, risks, and results.

Entertainment and Media LeadershipExamine how industry elites have shaped the role that entertainment and media play in our society. This class will explore how media moguls like Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner built their media empires; why Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos purchased the Washington Post; and how the Hollywood elite have made decisions on topics like casting, representation of cultural heritage on screen, or how to portray difficult political or social realities.

Health Care LeadershipUnderstand how policy makers and health care executives make decisions regarding some key and controversial topics. This course will seek to explore ethical implications on topics such as scientific research on human and animal subjects, cost and access to health care, technological innovation, abortion, and euthanasia.

Political LeadershipExplore how political leaders make decisions, influence public opinion, and balance their personal

Discuss how NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell has handled the variety of issues that have confronted the NFL under his leadership; how John Wooden became arguably the most successful coach in history; and the role that athletes, like Colin Kaepernick, Mohammed Ali, and Jackie Robinson share in representing and championing social issues.
