Welcome Week, the UI’s popular orientation festival, offers events, tours, and other opportunities for students to get to know their new friends and surroundings. Later in the fall, families are invited for Family Weekend, which includes campus tours, Dance Gala and dinner at Hancher, a Hawkeye football game, and nightly entertainment for UI students and their families.

Because not all families can attend the University’s orientation programs, the Parents Fund helps send student handbooks to keep parents in touch.

The Parents Fund helped to establish the AlcoholEdu program, an online education course to prevent alcohol abuse, now required for all first-year UI students. Whether or not a student drinks, AlcoholEdu will provide personalized information motivating them to make healthy behavior decisions and equipping them to better handle peers’ drinking behavior.

The Parents Association made a multi-year commitment of $100,000 to support the Admissions Visitors Center in the new Pomerantz Center, which opened in October 2005.

This year, the fund will help purchase technology upgrades for existing emergency Blue Cap Phones in select campus locations to add video capabilities. These phones, operable by the push of a single button, enhance campus safety by providing an immediate and direct link to campus police in times of trouble.
