Join us for an action-packed excursion into the world of jazz improvisation. Be a part of the third annual summer jazz camp for high school musicians at the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM)! Whether you already enjoy playing jazz solos or you are ready to learn how to improvise, this session is for you.

The Jazz ExperienceWe will start at square one, doing call and response, learning about chord construction, developing an understanding of jazz theory, working on transcriptions of famous solos, internalizing licks, and learning about the characteristics of American Jazz Styles. The clinic is open to high school musicians currently in grades 8–12 with a range of music and jazz backgrounds: from beginners to experienced, there will be sessions designed for your needs and interests.

This year we are adding a vocal jazz component to the program—again, sessions designed for all levels of vocalists.

Overview of the ProgramWe will begin on Sunday, June 13 with our opening session at 2 p.m. The four clinic days will be full, with activities planned throughout the day and during the evenings. When we’re not playing jazz, there will be free time for socializing, recreation, and lots of jamming. Six UMM jazz students will serve as music assistants, mentoring participants during the day and supervising the residence hall.

Final ConcertThe clinic will end with the big closing concert for family and friends on Wednesday evening, June 16. In addition, there will be informal concerts each night of the program, where guest artists and students perform.

Program Cost The entire cost for the four-day program is $350, which includes housing, meals, lessons, all materials, and a Jazz Experience T-Shirt. Register by April 30 and qualify for the early registration rate of $325 (see registration form). Some income-based scholarships are available.

Visit the Summer Jazz Experience website for complete program information.
