Why is there a UNE logo attached to this course?GRMN1501 is a course of the University of Newcastle, offered in collaboration with theUniversity of New England. For the purposes of enrolment and credit to your degree, it is afully-fledged Newcastle University course. This means that the rules of your university applywhere assessment policy, special exams and such aspects are concerned. The course is,however, run by staff at the University of New England, who are responsible for the coursecontent, and for the teaching and assessment of the course.

As well as your Course Coordinator, who is based at the University of New England, you willhave a tutor on the Callaghan campus of the University of Newcastle who will, in addition tooffering language tutorials, be able to answer day-to-day questions.

You will study German in mixed mode, which means that you are partly on-campus – andreceive face-to-face instruction, and partly distance mode, which means there is some materialyou will have to cover yourself.

How do the universities relate? This course content was developed by the University of New England and is taught by UNEstaff to UNE on-campus and distance educations students, and to on-campus students of theUniversity of Newcastle and James Cook University. Students at Newcastle will have an on-campus tutor for face-to-face teaching but will also participate in online interaction with allstudents and the UNE staff. At all times, however, you remain a student of the University ofNewcastle and adhere to University of Newcastle rules and policies. You are not a cross-institutional student enrolled at UNE.

How easy is it to learn a language by mixed mode?If you are reading these introductory notes as a student of the mixed mode at the University ofNewcastle and still have some trepidation about studying a language off-campus, let us assureyou that our off-campus students have coped very well in the past. They have consistentlyachieved very good results, even in the area of oral/aural language skills, where one mightexpect off-campus students to be disadvantaged.

There is a program to follow which should ensure that you complete the required amount ofmaterial each week as you work your way through the Introductory Chapter plus four chaptersof Deutsch: Na klar! If you follow this program you will be fully prepared for theassignments which have to be submitted to your tutor at regular intervals.

What do I study next? You will continue with GRMN1502 (German Language 1B), using the same learningresources you used during first semester. In second year, you will study GRMN2501 and2502. In your third year, you will progress to GRMN3501/3502 and/or GRMN3503/3504.GRMN3501 can be done concurrently with GRMN3503.

If you wish to major in German and have entered the programme at GRMN2501 level (thisapplies to post-HSC continuing students and native speakers), you will need to do two of thecourses listed below as a cross-institutional student. After the first year, you are alsowelcome to enrol in German literature and society courses, such as GRMN303Contemporary Short Stories, GRMN304 Images of Society in German Culture, GRMN305

Deutsch: Na klar! also offers Computer Study Modules for the practice of German grammarand vocabulary called Deutsch e-klaert, with error correction and automatic scoring. TheComputer Study Module is not an assessable part of GRMN1501, but there are 4 quizzes onBlackboard which form part of the assessment. They are also an entertaining way of revisingyour German for the exam. The quizzes and support materials are to be found on thefollowing website:

http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/007353532x/student_view0/

After you have logged in, choose the relevant chapter from the drop-down menu on the topright to do the quizzes and other activities. Click on Textbook audio to listen to the audio filesattached to the textbook.

The GRMN1501 “How to study the unit” guide (see below) has been put together to helpadvise you on study strategies and (especially in the initial stages) to guide you through thecourse. The audio (and video) material will ensure that you have a considerable amount ofGerman to interact with, work with and listen to for each chapter treated. This coursehandbook outlines the course requirements, assessment program, the University’s policies onassessment, plagiarism and the resources available to you at UNE.

Study guide for German Language 1A – ElementaryThe following study guide provides useful tips of how to study a foreign language. It alsocontains detailed instructions to assist you in working through the chapters and activities ofthe learning resources of Deutsch: Na klar! and any supplementary material we provide foryou. We suggest that you work with the study guide and Deutsch: Na klar! side-by-side.

Studying this course introduces you to the German language as used in everyday life bypeople living in German-speaking countries. The language, communication and interculturalskills you will acquire in this course are transferable to many professions. Of course, studyingjust one semester of German is insufficient to turn you into a fluent speaker, but afoundational knowledge prepares you for further studies. A number of generic skills arefostered in this course, including the ability to fill the role of a cooperative, productive teammember and the ability to adapt to an unfamiliar culture and operate in a socially andculturally diverse environment.

Language skills can give you (or, if you are a teacher, also your students) the edge in anincreasingly competitive international or global employment market, where excellentprofessional skills and experiences may no longer suffice.

How should you study for this course?

Begin each learning session by accessing your Blackboard site. Here you’ll find an importantlink called “Your Learning”. Click on it and select “Learning Goals (Objectives). TheLearning Goals/Objectives present you with a brief overview of a given lecture and what youshould know at the end of a session.

Under the same link (Your Learning), you will find a Lernplan. It gives you a detailed listingof all new learning material per lesson and shows you how the exercises and activities in yourtextbook, workbook and laboratory manual “fit together”. On a regular basis, I also post someadditional grammar summaries (under Grammar), which you might find useful.

Work through the content, vocabulary and grammar points introduced in your textbook, thenconsolidate your learning by answering the questions in your workbook. Last, but not least, turn to your online grammar tool Deutsch e-klaert.

Another useful link under Your Learning is the ‘Answer Guide’ for the textbook’s Aktivitäten(activities) and Übungen (exercises). The answers for the exercises in the workbook and thelaboratory manual are at the back of each book.

Once you’ve worked through all the material, go back to your ‘Learning Goals/Objectives’and reassure yourself that you have mastered all that needed to be learnt. At the bottom of thesheet, you’ll find your “homework”. I suggest that you wait a day before attempting it, as itcan function as a ‘revision tool’ to show you how much you have retained while learning thecontent. Don’t be surprised if you have to revise regularly. This is a normal part of learninganother language. Once you’ve completed it, please check your answers. When learning thevocabulary, please note that you are required to learn all words and phrases. We recommendthat you get into the habit of learning all nouns with their grammatical gender.

For the novice learner, learning vocabulary is a slow process initially. Over time, you’ll findthat learning vocabulary will take less and less time as your brain gets used to the task anddevelops the necessary connections to help with recall. When travelling by public transport, why not use the time and learn vocabulary? Learning and revising a few new words orexpressions each day will quickly add up!

Regular and active learning is essential if you want to develop your language proficiency. Wesuggest that each day you set aside a certain amount of time to practise your German. Ingeneral, 10-12 hours of study per week (which includes the contact hours with your tutor) areneeded to learn the material well.

...and a word of caution: ‘cramming’ does not work when learning a language! How do the structure and organisation of the course assist my learning?

In order to make it easy for you to learn, German 1A is tightly structured and organised. Thecourse (structure and content) is based on your resources Deutsch: Na klar! and the onlinelearning tool Deutsch e-rklaert. They complement each other and are fundamental to yourlearning. You need to work through all the material to master the content of this course. Theteaching material is based on a careful analysis of what linguistic, content-specific andcultural skills are required for everyday communication in authentic 'real' life situation.

Do I receive helpful feedback on my learning?

Yes. We endeavour to create a supportive, challenging and interesting learning environmentfor (and with) you. During your sessions with your tutor, you will be given immediatefeedback for any questions you might have. For any confidential matters, please contact yourtutor by email (don’t forget to put your course code and student number in the header; thishelps us to answer your questions more quickly). In addition, we ask you to use theGRMN101 online discussion board (see below). Together with your own learning in yourown time, these measures are intended to support you as much as possible.

Student Consultations

We would ask you to adhere to the following guidelines in contacting your tutor/lecturer:1. Your questions to teaching staff are welcome, but please first check the on-line site

(including announcements), as the answer is probably there.2. Emails should be brief and to the point. Please clearly indicate the course name or code in

the subject line of your message.3. Enquiries should be kept to student consultation hours wherever possible.

How do the assessment tasks relate to what I am expected to learn?

Your assessment tasks are closely related to what you are expected to learn. One of the mainrequirements for you this semester is to acquaint yourself with an introductory knowledge ofGerman. Past experience has shown that regular formative/summative tests are the easiestway for you to learn the many new words, phrases and grammatical structures at amanageable pace. Learning how to use these words and phrases appropriately is essential inthis course. The assessment tasks are progressive and cover the material learnt duringprevious sessions. Each test provides you with an opportunity to revise your language skills. For example, if you find that you make frequent errors in certain areas, e.g. using the personalpronouns, consult your textbook and quickly revise what you learnt previously. Frequentrevision is a normal part of learning another language. You will find that it often helps toexplain certain points to others. Finally, preparing for your final exams will round off yourlearning and directly relate to what you have learnt throughout the semester.

How much do I need to know?

Ideally, you should learn all the vocabulary and the grammar covered in Deutsch: Na klar!and the online learning tool Deutsch e-klaert. However, if you have an active command of50% of the vocabulary and know the basics of the grammar you will pass, while 65% of thevocabulary and a more extensive command of the grammar will earn you a credit, 75% adistinction and 85% a high distinction mark.

It is possible for students with no prior knowledge of German to earn marks at the top end ofthe high distinction scale (90%+)!

Last not least....

Studying another language and, by default, its society and culture can open doors that wouldotherwise have remained closed to you.

Be patient with yourself. Keep learning and you will succeed.

Enjoy your studies!

Frequently Asked QuestionsIf this course is being run by UNE, am I still a University of Newcastlestudent?

Yes! Although the teaching materials have been chosen by UNE staff, and the assessment isset by them, this course is coded and run as a University of Newcastle course and you adhereto the rules of the University of Newcastle at all times. This means, for example, that requestsfor special consideration, special exams, are all conducted through University of Newcastlechannels using University of Newcastle policy. The only difference is that you have access tothe UNE course website by means of a specially generated username and password. UNE e-submission and the myUNE portal will not work for you, because you are enrolled at theUniversity of Newcastle.

So, who marks my assignments and the exam?

Your assignments will be marked by the tutor appointed by UNE to conduct the face-to-faceinstruction. Hand your assignments to him/her and perform oral assessments live with thetutor. Your exams will be marked at UNE by the German lecturers there. This is to ensureconsistency across the three cohorts of students (UNE, JCU and Newcastle)

What does ‘mixed-mode’ mean?

Mixed-mode students receive some face-to-face instruction, but not as much as on-campusstudents. This means you must pay special attention to the homework your tutor sets, as youwill be required to cover some of the materials in ‘distance education mode’. The coursehomepage is there to help you do that. You can ask questions and work in groups on problemswith the other students. In addition to this, there is an online grammar tutor available for youto use. This tutor is called Deutsch e-rklaert.

What is Deutsch e-rklaert?

Deutsch e-rklaert is an online grammar tutor designed specially with distance educationstudents in mind. Deutsch e-rklaert offers you not just detailed explanations, examples andexercises, but also practises various language learning strategies with the student. It isavailable from the link on your course homepage or at http://tlc.une.edu.au/deutsch-erklaert/.Deutsch e-rklaert can also be downloaded to your desktop, where you can use it withoutneeding to be logged in to the internet.

What is GRMN101?GRMN101 is the UNE equivalent of GRMN1501. You will see this course code on the coursehomepage. (For technical reasons the course homepage has to remain GRMN101, but for you,it is GRMN1501).
