University of St. Michael’s CollegeCoat of Arms

The coat of arms of the University of St. Michael’s College reflects our history and our traditions. The design of the shield is based upon that of Armand Comte de Charbonnel, second Bishop of Toronto, who founded the College in 1852 and entrusted it to the Basilian Fathers, his former teachers in France, whom he invited to teach in his diocese. The three star-like objects are spurs, and, together with the crescent, indicate that one of the count’s ancestors was a knight in the Crusades. The tongues of fire around the edge of the shield allude to St. Basil the Great, who was known as “The Pillar of Fire”.

The supporters are an eagle and a crowned lion with a cross in his paw. The eagle is adapted from the arms of the Hon. John Elmsley, who gave the land upon which the first college building was constructed in 1856. The acorns on the eagle’s wing come from the oak tree, the crest of the University of Toronto. The crowned lion with a cross in his paw alludes to the lion supporter of Queen Victoria and to the crowned lion in the arms of Pope Pius IX, both of whom were reigning when the college was founded. In addition, the Rt. Hon. Sir William Mulock, who aided our affiliation with the University of Toronto from 1881, used as a crest a lion holding a cross. The supporters stand upon a grassy hillock representing Clover Hill, the site of the college.

St. Michael’s crest is a circlet of maple leaves, alluding to Canada, and red roundels taken from the arms of Pope Pius XI, in whose pontificate the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies was founded. From the circlet arises the winged sword of St. Michael the Archangel, long used as a symbol of the College.

The three Greek words of our motto, eusebeia, mousike, gymnastike, stand for reverence or the right worship of God, the pursuit of liberal education, and the exercise of the body.

The coat of arms was granted by the Queen’s College of Arms on 8 May, 1980.
