Formula SAE Series
What Is Formula Formula SAE is an international collegiate competition in which students design, manufacture, and race a new open-wheeled formula-style racecar every year. We start each season at the world championship held at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. We then travel to Barrie, Ontario, Canada to compete in a growing competition with teams from across the United States and Canada. Additionally, we compete in two autocross shootout competitions at Lawrence Technical University and Pittsburgh International Racing Complex.
SAE competitions are broken down into two categories: static and dynamic events. The scores from each event are weighted according to the pie chart below. Teams are awarded for their performance in individual events as well as their overall performance at competition.
D Y N A M I C E V E N T S
Autocross - Point to point time trial
Acceleration - 100 meter sprint
Endurance - 22km (13.7mi) wheel-to-wheel race
Efficiency - Fuel consumed during endurance Skidpad - Figure-8 time trial

About The Team
The 2019-2020 season will mark the 26th year of the University of Toledo Formula SAE team. This year’s team includes a wide variety of students, ranging from freshmen to seniors majoring in various types of engineering and medical studies. The team is broken down into five subgroups including chassis, suspension, powertrain, electrical, and aerodynamics. Subgroups are lead by design development leaders who aim to design innovative and efficient systems within the car while transferring knowledge to younger members of the team. In addition to mentoring underclassmen in their team projects, leads also provide assistance with classwork and adapting to university life.
The SAE program offers students the opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world problems within their co-ops and careers. The intellectual growth and leadership of each Rocket Motorsports team member are seen in our car each year. Rocket Motorsports is proud to foster the development of skilled engineers as well as strong team players and leaders.

About the Cars
Building our car is a year round job. Beginning at MIS, students analyze the car’s performance using collected data, FMEA diagrams, competition judges’ feedback, and various simulations. This analysis is used to optimize and refine the design and manufacturing process of the car. Furthermore, we use every retired car to track our progress and measure the success of newly implemented designs each year.
A project management schedule and proposed budget are then created for research, development, manufacturing, and testing.

Manufacturing and assembling
This year, Rocket Motorsports hosted CAT Racing from the University of Applied Sciences in Coburg, Germany. We shared our lab and testing facilities for several weeks prior to competition at MIS and were able to exchange many design and manufacturing ideas between team members. We are grateful for the opportunity to build connections with fellow FSAE students!
