2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

Arguably the most experienced team in program history will compete for the Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics program during the upcoming 2014 season. That fact, coupled with the success of last year’s team, has resulted in strong expectations for this year’s club.

The Owls return 17 student-athletes from last year’s squad that finished with 12 victories, including a win over Division I Yale. Along the way, the team set new program records for team vault score and team overall score. Southern Connecticut also had eight student-athletes qualify for USAG Collegiate Nationals,

As always, Southern Connecticut will face an extremely challenging schedule, one that includes the likes of the Yale, Brown, Towson and Rutgers. The ECAC Championships are on March 22 followed by the USAG Nationals from April 11-13.

The BreakdownSouthern Connecticut returns four seniors, all of whom

have been steady contributors over the course of the past four years.

Brianna Ecklof and Deni Morgan will serve as team captains this year. Ecklof has qualified for the USAG Nationals in each of the last two years and earned All-America honors on the floor as a sophomore. Morgan has been a steady contributor on the beam for the Owls over the course of the past three years.

Classmates Nina Daughrity and Gabriella Hude are also expected to be key contributors for the Owls. Daughrity enjoyed a strong start to her junior season on the vault before suffering a season-ending injury. Hude factored in on both the floor and bars while qualifying once again for Nationals. Hude has also been recognized as a USAG and a NACGC/W Scholar-Athlete in her career.

The Owls have six student-athletes in a decorated junior class. Meghan Cole and Chelcie Rosborough are returning USAG Nationals qualifiers, while Jenny Kaufman, Samantha Menichini and Emily Shelton are all returning USAG Scholar-Athletes. Taylor Rohrbaugh will serve as a team captain this winter. All figure prominently in the team’s plans for a successful campaign.

The sophomore class is the largest individual group, with seven student-athletes returning. Rachel de la Torre, Nicole Pruchnik and Jennifer Rochefort were all USAG Nationals qualifiers in their rookie seasons. Victoria Caputo, Austin Page, Meagan Puccio and Jasmine Zambrana all saw action as freshmen and will look to figure in on the scoresheet regularly again this year.

Abigail Bensley, Rotem Porat and Christine Volz are newcomers to the club this year. All were accomplished scholastic and club level gymnasts and will look to make immediate contributions at the collegiate level this winter.

OWLS IN THE COMMUNITY

Community engagement is an important component of the experience as a Division II student-athlete. The Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics team continues to be active in the local community with

various ventures.

All intercollegiate programs at SCSU participate in the Tim Greer Insurance Agency, Inc. Community Service Cup, which provides a competitive format that allows student-athletes to gain an enriched experience through engagement

with the on-campus and local communities by supporting ventures of traditional citizens, campus community members and peer students and student-athletes. SCSU student-athletes volunteered nearly 3,000 hours of their time

to numerous outreach efforts, both on-campus and in Greater New Haven, during the 2012-13 academic year.

As a result of their outreach efforts, the Owls claimed the 2013 Tim Greer Insurance Agency, Inc. Community Service Cup for their extensive volunteer work.

Among the events that the team and coaching staff participated in during the past calendar year:

• Assisted with the annual ‘Girls and Women in Sports’ Day event.

• Worked with students at the Wallingford Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club.

• Took part in the annual ‘Friends of Rudolph’ event on campus that entertains more than 1,000 youngsters and their families.

• Contributed to a department wide food drive to benefit the needy during the holiday season.

• Participated in the ‘Yoga Pink’ event on campus to promote breast cancer awareness.

• Spearheaded a holiday drive to make cards for members of the military.

• Volnteered at a Cancer Survivor Day Event at Geisinger Hospital

• Assisted in events at the East Harlem Center• Volunteered at a Dance Recital event.• Assisted at a Health Insurance Education session. • Held a food and personal care item drive as part of the

‘Adapt-a-Family’ event. • Visited a local soup kitchen multiple times and helped

with meal preperations and cleanup. • Assisted with Church Street School’s Fall Festival • Worked with youngsters on arts and crafts projects•Participated in individual gymnastics instruction,

clothing drives, and academic instruction at Sunday school. • Provided instruction to aspiring gymnasts at an all day

youth gymnastics event.

The Owls pose for a photo after being recognized as the department’s Tim Greer Insurance Agency, Inc. Community

Service Cup winner.

• Collected items and donated them to the Humane Society.

•Participated in the ‘Cornflake Extravaganza’ event.

Southern Connecticut State University maintains an outstanding

intercollegiate athletic program for men and women, recognizing the needs of students in individual and team sports. The Owls are members

of the Northeast-10 Conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II. Southern’s women’s gymnastics program

also participates in the USA Gymnastics collegiate championships.Southern has had numerous individual NCAA champions in swimming, track and field and gymnastics and ranks

among the top 10 of Division II colleges and universities for most individual championships. In addition, the Owls have won a NCAA Division II record six NCAA team titles in men’s soccer, three in men’s gymnastics and one in women’s basketball.

Women’s programs in cross country, field hockey, volleyball, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, track and field (indoor & outdoor), lacrosse and softball have produced many distinguished athletes and coaches. Southern has a rich tradition in women’s basketball, having placed among the top four teams nationally four times. The Owls’ Mary Anne O’Connor and Sue Rojcewicz were members of the 1976 U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team, which won a silver medal at Montreal. The 2007 team won the Division II National Championship for the first time in program history while finishing the year 34-2 overall.

Men’s programs include soccer, cross country, football, track and field (indoor & outdoor), swimming, basketball and baseball. The Owls’ Ben Michaelson, a 10-time NCAA champion in swimming, won two gold medals and set two records in 2003 for the United States at the Pan American Games.
