The UP Beat
The United Presbyterian Church of Claysville
With Christ as our guide, we honor the past and embrace the present, while building our future.
Volume 43, Issue 7 July/August 2015
Out of the Depths: How and Why We Pray
Prayer has always been at the center of the Christian life. We pray several times to-
gether each week in worship; many of us pray over meals; we teach our children to pray,
and we pray with them before bedtime each night; and many of us have a time each day
when we pray alone. But what are we really doing when we pray, and what is prayer sup-
posed to do for us? What does it mean that our prayers are sometimes not answered?
In the month of August I will address these questions in a series of sermons. I will
explore the practice of prayer through some of the prayers in the Old Testament. I am
drawn to these prayers in part because they are often so honest. Some of them express an-
ger and frustration and call on God to explain why injustice remains in the world. Some of
them cry to God for help. Still others celebrate God’s goodness. What holds them all togeth-
er, however, is the idea that prayer is the place we are able to express our deepest emo-
tions, our greatest dreams, and our strongest protests to God. Such prayers arise “out of
the depths” of our being, as the psalmist says (Psalm 130:1). The fact that such prayers ap-
pear in the Bible suggests this is exactly how God wants us to relate to him. They stand as
an invitation to us to enter and ever-deepening relationship with our Maker, and he re-
ceives our prayers with mercy, grace, and understanding. In other words, God really cares
how we feel and what we are experiencing, and God is moved when we pray. So, I invite
you to journey with me through some of the prayers of Scripture that they might teach us
more about who God is and who God wants us to be.
Blessings,
Jerome

Dear Claysville United Presbyterian Church,
Thank you for your generous donation of $50 in support of Beverly’s Birthdays. This support will help
provide gifts, supplies, party favors, decorations, treats, birthday cake and lots of smiles for children in the
Pittsburgh region who find themselves homeless on their birthdays.
Living with the extreme stress of being homeless can be crippling for a young child. It is our goal to give
these children birthdays that they will not forget - to give them a positive memory , a glimmer of hope, a
break from their daily struggle—just so that for one day they can feel special and loved. Your support will
provide that hope for our children and we cannot thank you enough.
With deepest gratitude,
Megs Yunn

New In September!!!!!!!!!
Trustees, Deacons and Session will meet on the third Tuesday of the month as follows:
Trustees 6 pm Deacons 6:30pm Session 7pm
The meetings will overlap in order to improve sharing of information concerning compassionate care,
property and spiritual priorities. Meeting on the same night can also bring us together in worship and fellow-
ship to have a greater sense of God’s presence and guidance.
All committees will need to meet prior to the third Tuesday. Written reports must be submitted to ses-
sion immediately following your committee meeting. Please include requests for motions in t he appropriate
section of the report. The elders and I believe that improving communications and use of our time will help
move us forward into the future God has already planned. Keep us in prayer and as always, may God bless
you abundantly!
