December Services T HE UU-L INK December 2013 D D Don on on onS S Sense ense ense ense by Rev. Don Garrett December’s Theme: Children of God Every year around the time that winter creeps upon us with cold breath and icey feet, our culture turns to themes of hope reborn and life triumphant – Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the inspiration for the Christian religion. And what is Jesus, but a child of God? And what did Jesus teach, if not that we all, every one of us, are also children of God, heirs to a peaceable kingdom of love, compassion and joy? Although many Unitarian Universalists ind no need for traditional concepts of a creating, controlling, rewarding & punishing God almighty, we do resonate with the themes of the season. Our hearts melt and our spirits soar as we open ourselves once again to the tender hopes of Christmastide. As the hymn, Within the Shining of a Star, says: Withintheshiningofastarwecatchaglimpseofwhoweare; ineveryinfantbornweseethehopeofournativity. Themiracleofeachnewbirthcanshakeandsavethestonyearth; triumphantly the newborn’s cry strikes echoes from the waiting sky. See you in church. Don Two Special Services This Month WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION Join us in the Gym on the evening of Saturday, December 21, at 7 p.m. for a rousing good time of readings, song, drumming and dance as we celebrate the longest night of the year! Rev. Garrett will be joined by area faith leaders for this service, which is open to all CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE OF LESSONS AND CAROLS We will celebrate Christmas Eve with this special service, a Unitarian Universalist adaptation of the traditional service of lessons and carols, with inspiration from the Moravians.

DECEMBER BREAKFAST FORUM

December 1

December Worship Theme: Children of God

Rev. Don Garrett, Facilitator

There will be a brief presentation, followed by a small-group discussion and a reuniting later to share what we’ve learned on the topic of “Children of God”. Join in this adventure in speaking, listening, thinking, reflecting and sharing together in a new way; another way to live our values of ompassion, nurture, and justice in our beloved community. December 8

Tragicomedy of Politics

Erol Ulucakli, Presenter

We are bombarded daily with political, economic, and other news about the US and the world. We feel we are helpless to cause change or to have influence on what is happening in the US, Washington, or Pennsylvania. Deeds are done on our behalf by people we elected or people who should never have been elected. It is a depressing portrait of the current era...but instead of worrying about anything, why don't we sit down and look at the humorous side of politics? December 15

Envision Lehigh Valley

Joyce Marin, Executive Dir ReNew LV, Presenter

“Envision Lehigh Valley” is a collaboration of public-sector and non-profit organizations to develop a sustainable community plan for the Lehigh Valley. This three-year, $3.4 million grant-funded planning project is a comprehensive approach to growth that considers the goals of the residents and the long-term impacts on the Valley. The Lehigh Valley is projected to grow another 145,000 people by 2030. Change is coming. What do you want the Valley to be in the next 20 years? December 22

Science and Morality

Peter Stone, Presenter

In his book The Moral Landscape, New Atheist Sam Harris promises to show "how science can determine human values." But how well does Harris succeed? Peter Stone, a political theorist at Trinity College Dublin, will explore this question. December 29

Long Strange Trip, Part V - Evolution (1861-1961)

Jansen Wendell, Presenter

This film follows both Unitarianism and Universalism through the late 19th and early 20th centuries as they evolve from Christian bible-oriented religions to our present-day non-creedal movement. It discusses influences as diverse as Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, the Civil War, Feminism and Suffrage, and the Social Gospel. It chronicles the roles of such actors as Julia Ward Howe and Clarence Skinner. – DVD

PLANNING AHEAD As you ponder the year to come, perhaps you are

reminded of an occasion or person you would like to

honor or memorialize in 2014. Please feel free to

contact [email protected] or phone Margo

Dixon at 610-419-0219 to request to be put on the list of

Sunday Flower donors for the Sunday of your choice.

We ask the "Neighborhoods" to fill in Sundays which

have not been requested, but your wish to bring or buy

flowers for a certain date for a special reason always

takes precedent. If fresh flowers on Sunday are

important to you, consider this way of serving UUCLV.

Thanks.
