BINNIE, SHAPIRO GET NASSAU’S VT-NH STATIONS
Last week, creditors approved a bid of
$12.5 million for thirty Nassau Broad-
casting stations in northern New Eng-
land, including ten here in Vermont.
The winning bidder was former New
Hampshire U.S. Senate candidate Bill
Binnie who will spin off 13 stations to
longtime broadcast station owner Jeff
Shapiro.
Of the ten Nassau stations in Vermont,
Shapiro will own eight while Binnie will
own two. Most of the stations were
once part of the VOX group that
Shapiro and others sold to Nassau in
2004 for $31 million.
Shapiro already
owns Great East-
ern Broadcasting
which operates
WKKN-FM in
Westminster, VT
and WMXR-FM
in Woodstock,
VT. The group
also owns New Hampshire-licensed sta-
tions WTPL-FM in Hillsborough, WEEY-
FM in Swanzey, WTSL-AM in Hanover,
WGXL-FM in Hanover and WXXK-FM
in Lebanon.
Under a new entity, Vertical Capital
Partners, Shapiro will own Vermont sta-
tions WMOO-FM in Derby, WIKE-AM in
Newport, WSNO-AM and WORK-FM in
Barre, WWFY-FM in Berlin, WWOD-FM
in Hartford, WEXP-FM in Brandon and
WTHK-FM in Wilmington.
In addition,
Shapiro’s group
will also take own-
ership of New
Hampshire sta-
tions WTSV-AM
and WHDQ-FM in
Claremont, WFYX
-FM in Walpole,
WWHQ-FM in Meredith and WLKZ-FM
in Wolfeboro.
Binnie, who already owns WBIN-TV in
Derry, will pick up two Vermont-licensed
stations, WXLF-FM in Hartford and
WZLF-FM in Bellows Falls. As part of
the deal, Binnie’s WBIN Media Compa-
ny will also own six other New Hamp-
shire stations and nine stations in
southern Maine.
It is not yet known when the deals will
close or when the stations will officially
change hands.
KEVIN OHL 1960 - 2012
Longtime Vermont radio per-
sonality Kevin Ohl passed
away May 29 at Fletcher
Allen Health Care in Burling-
ton after a long and coura-
geous battle with acute leu-
kemia. He was 51.
A native of Essex Junction,
Kevin tried his hand in Holly-
wood for a brief time, but re-
turned to Vermont where he
worked as a disc jockey at
WQCR-FM (which became
WOKO-FM while he was
there) in Burlington. He later
served as the morning man
on WVMX-FM in Stowe (now
WCVT-FM). Afterwards, he
worked for WKDR-AM in Bur-
lington, where he was a long-
time contributor and produc-
er of “The Manno and Con-
don Show.” Kevin was also
the producer of “The Mark
Johnson Show.”
His quick wit and his concern
for others will not be forgot-
ten by his many friends.
He is survived by his parents
and a sister and her family. A
celebration of his life will be
held at 11 a.m. on June 9 at
Corbin & Palmer Funeral
Home at 9 Pleasant St. in
Essex Junction. Dress is
casual and Hawaiian shirts
are encouraged.
NASCAR HONORS SQUIER WITH NEW AWARD
Leave it to WDEV’s Ken Squier to win an award named, in part, for
him. NASCAR has announced the creation of a new award to honor
the contributions of media to the sport’s success. The award will
bear the names of the first two winners, Squier and fellow broadcast-
er Barney Hall, and will be called the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR
Media Excellence. Squier helped popularize NASCAR with his
work on MRN, CBS, TBS and the SPEED network. Congrats, Ken!

IDEAS, FOOD AND FUN AT THE 57th VAB CONVENTION An impressive contingent of Vermont broadcasters filled the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Montpelier May 17th for the 57th annual VAB Convention.
They were there to see old friends, get new ideas for sales and programming success and enjoy great food during the Commercial of the Year Awards luncheon.

Gov. Peter Shumlin was on hand to address the group and praised the state’s broadcasters for their coverage of Tropical Storm Irene.
