“I’ve always liked beautiful things,” says Maria Elena on when she realized she was interested in fashion. “Way back when I was little, I already loved designing my own clothes. I was just so impatient for a dress to be done. I wanted to see the result right away!” It seemed only natural, then, that the statuesque mother would eventually find herself opening The Fashion House of Maria Elena to showcase her intricate collections. “I started as a model, and when I decided to go into business, fashion came to mind. First I was a buyer for my ready-to-wear boutique, and now I’m in couture.” “I love to learn and try things out,” she says, demonstrating the spiritedness that has turned her two-year-old store into a success. “When I started, I got an assistant

to help me with ideas, did my own research, and even took tutorials with an established couturier. The Fashion House of Maria Elena is a product of this entire experience.” Her creations fit right into the most elegant evening gala, with delicate detailing and shapes that are simple and sexy but still glamorous, though she has a special interest in dresses of a more romantic kind. “Bridal gowns have been my absolute secret passion!” she gushes. “Really, I’ve always wanted to be this princess bride with a wedding straight out of a fairy tale, so you can imagine how I obsess over details with my client as we play up each others’ ideas on how her wedding gown should look like.” Whatever she’s designing, though, she backs on her past profession as a guide.

It almost felt like we followed the White Rabbit into Wonderland on the day we shot Maria Elena for this month’s cover. Her stunning collection looked ethereal against the beautiful backdrop created by Pink Flora, a romantic image that seems perfectly fitting for the time. Yes, the season for candy hearts and red roses is here, when people are suddenly scrambling to create a memorable occasion for the love of their life, or at least the flavor of the month. If you’re stumped on what to do, take cues from our Valentines Guide and plan a romantic dinner date. Want the extra brownie points? Grab a gift too. (Diamonds? Yes, please.)

Of course, the season of love isn’t reserved for those with a constant +1. Though it’s easy to slip into a slump of bitter diatribes over drinks, it might be better to celebrate the other loves in your life. My Valentines date will be a +3 with my lovely friends over chocolate cake, gossip and, to be honest, probably a few cocktails. It helps to stay positive--you never know, the One could be that guy at the bar who’s just as miserable as you. Happy hunting!

“Having worn clothes on the ramp and in front of the cameras for so many years gives me an awareness of the power of fashion to inspire,” she admits. “But as the wearer, I was concerned about how clothes moved with my body, its functionality. That’s why I count comfort as an important ingredient in a good design.” Although busy on most days of the week, she makes sure to schedule some time with her family and catch up on missed sleep. “On other days, I indulge my love for photography,” she says, going on to say she likes to keep things visual. The hobby must come handy during her travels, which mostly consists of her two favorite shopping destinations Hong Kong and Singapore. “Shopping can be so therapeutic, you know,

and these places offer some of the best merchandise at reasonable prices.” With all her success, Maria Elena isn’t one who now rests on her laurels. “I’m into jewelry design and already making some for friends, so that’s in the pipeline,” she shares. Her own ready-to-wear collection might also be in the works. “I can be very ambitious,” she says, which is a trait that works for her. “I love nice things and I don’t want to settle for less.” Her penchant for nice things carries over onto how she carries herself. “I always wanted to look the best I can, wherever I am. No matter how I feel inside, I make it a point that it will not affect the way I look on the outside. I mean, I have my ups and downs, but that’s no excuse to look my worst.”

Smart launches Jump In SIM for the barkadaSmart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is encouraging young barkadas to jump in to the country’s most reliable network through the Jump In SIM – a product designed to let them stay connected with each other without hurting their pockets. The SIM comes with student-friendly load packages. Jump All Out 15 allows unlimited texting to all networks, 30 minutes of calls to five friends on the Smart, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun networks, and the use of 10 MB of data for one whole day – all for only P15. At the same price, Jump All Text 15 offers unlimited texts to all networks for two days. Best of all, students can get the Jump In SIM for FREE after just loading up P15 in consumable airtime credits. “Students are among the top users of mobile technology. This is why Smart developed a product exclusively for them. We took into consideration their lifestyle and budget to provide the perfect SIM that will let them build and enrich their relationships without draining their allowance,” said Emmanuel Lorenzana, Smart executive vice president and head of wireless consumer division. “With Smart’s superior voice, SMS, and data services, students will be able to share their Jump In moments with friends without worrying

about blocked calls, unsent text messages, and poor Internet connection,” he added.

SMART BRINGS JUMP IN TO SCHOOLS To make it easier and more enjoyable for students to avail themselves of the Jump In SIM, Smart has been visiting schools all over the country, with fun activities and prizes. Smart’s first stop was San Sebastian College-Recoletos in Manila. Students had a blast posing with their friends at the photo booth and playing Kinect in Smart’s Jump In booth. They also received cool rewards such as movie passes and Starbucks gift certificates after getting Jump In SIMs, loading airtime credits, or tweeting about their Jump In experience. Among those who were happy about their barkada’s new Jump In SIMs was tourism management freshman Jovie Floresta. “The offers are so good, and I like how our cellphone numbers are almost the same. It’s really for the barkada,” he said. “I already know that Smart is a network that won’t let us down. With the Jump In SIM, it’s going to be easier to get the guys together for a project. Now that we don’t need to worry about communicating with each other, we have more time to ‘Live More,’” he added. Smart’s Jump In Caravan has already

been to Our Lady of Fatima University in Valenzuela, Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro, Angeles University in Pampanga, San Beda College in Manila, and University of Pangasinan. It also visited Southwestern University in Cebu, University of Baguio, and University of the Philippines Visayas, and Silliman University in Dumaguete.

SCHOOLS, ORGS CAN BENEFIT TOO Smart has special gifts in store for schools and student organizations that will record a significant number of Jump In SIM activations. A thousand student activations will get a school P10,000, while 2,000 activations will get a school P20,000. Meanwhile, the student organization with the highest number of member activations by the end of the Smart Jump In Caravan’s visit will receive one laptop or a group gimmick worth P15,000 from Smart. Students may visit www.smartjumpin.com to learn which schools are included in the caravan. There they can also watch Smart’s Jump In video featuring Filipino global superstars apl.de.ap and Jessica Sanchez. Students whose schools are not yet included in the caravan may get the Jump In SIM from any of the 100 Smart Stores nationwide.

Think Pink Flora Starting out as a hobby of crafting simple flower arrangements and centerpieces for their family catering company, Pink Flora has become the city’s authority on elegant flower arrangements and special event styling. Since the 1980s, they have had a love for beauty and a passion for making people happy, as founder Pinky Chang puts it, which makes Pink Flora stand above the rest. Of course, being an accredited member of the prestigious World Flower Council is a remarkable feat as well. With a design aesthetic Pinky describes as versatile, their range stretches across a wide array of themes, from the classic and elegant to the more adventurous-themed shindigs, styling weddings, birthdays and debuts, as well as corporate events. Sky’s the limit, or so it seems, with rooms decked out and draped from ceiling to floor as 1930s speakeasies, winter wonderlands complete with frosted plants and branches, a steamy Moroccan sunset with Bedouin-styled marquees, a garden wedding with a gazebo constructed on-site and covered in flowers, and even a traditional Indian wedding playing into her client’s fantasies. Just recently, an avant-garde young couple set out to join together as man and wife in an enchanted medieval-themed wedding. It was

a massive undertaking, what some may call the wedding of the decade with a guest list of 700. To create the look, the team brought in tree trunks, branches and twigs, gnarled vines, truckloads of fruits, and made-to-order gold-tiered trays with decorative glass plates. Every event is customized to the clients’ preferences, always beginning each project with a casual meet-and-greet to get to know them and their requirements. The result is a truly personalized service to create a unique celebration that does justice to the occasion celebrated.

With their extensive experience, this event stylist creates stylish fetes that bring their clients’ floral fantasies and elaborate whims to life.

TheBe ready this Valentine’s with charming tokens of affection to with stuttering confessions and elaborately planned dates. These restaurants around the city have sumptuous meals to share. Playing footsy and staring dreamily in each other’s eyes optional.

R&M CHOCOMANGGA“The idea came about after we started mass production of our Mango Chew,” says R&M’s Erwin Siao about how they came up with the idea of coating the Cebuano favorite with chocolate. “Unlike our regular dried mangoes, it has more of a sweet and sour jelly-like taste.” After throwing around some ideas, it seemed only natural to dip the pieces in dark and white chocolate, creating a fusion of flavors with each bite. And with the new R&M Choco Mangga packaging, it’s the chance to give out Valentines with a local flair.Available at supermarkets.

For thrill-seeking newly weds, Cagayan de Oro might just be your beat. Most popular for white-water rafting, you’ll hang on to your partner even more tightly while thrashing through the current and jagged rocks. Forty-five minutes from CDO, the 850-meter zipline at Dahilayan could be something you and your beau could brave together. Also half an hour away from the city is the Mapawa Nature Park, where honeymooners can trek the scenic river or ride horseback through the quiet woods together. With a strategic spot located close to all these places, all the necessary mod-con and attentive Kagay-anon hospitality, N Hotel is the best place to relax after all the adrenaline rush. While on your honeymoon, you might want to treat each other to their Junior Suite, which has a dining and living area and a king-sized bed, perfect for

rolling around under their sheets. The pool is a stone’s throw away, and you can dine under the stars in their poolside restaurant, Bon Café which offers unpretentious and savory Chinese and Filipino favorites. If you haven’t tied the knot yet, the modern and chic N Hotel is an excellent place to get hitched. The Archdiocesan Shrine Church or Eco Church is five minutes away and you can fit up to 300 of your closest friends and family in their Lambago Hall. Your favorite event stylist can set up the foyer for cocktails while the bare bones of the main hall make it ideal for more décor.

N Hotel is located along Kauswagan Highway, Cagayan de Oro City. For more information, please call +63 88 880-1924 to 25 or +63 917 7965211 or +63 922 8480260

Given the commission to transform a massive, old party venue in Cagayan De Oro City, the design team ADA Architects looked to modern influences to create not only an events place but also a chic and fresh three-storey hotel with 26 Superior Rooms, 34 de Luxe Rooms, 3 Junior Suites and 3 Family Rooms. Sourcing for the tiles, bathroom fixtures, lights, lamps and fabric were done in Cebu and Manila. The lobby furniture boasts of export pieces from Classical Geometry, while outdoor furniture was provided by Rain or Shine. Mandaue Foam furnished most of the suite rooms. ADA Architects is a collaboration of two pioneers, modern architects from Cebu, Arch. Arsing Abella and Cagayan De Oro-based Arch. Ed Daang. Together, they added a completely new hotel structure the adjacent old building that houses the grand ballroom on the second level and several smaller function rooms below. Part of the old structure was also converted into a restaurant and café that will cater to the hotel guests and functions. The restaurant has an indoor and outdoor dining area that opens to a resort-like swimming pool with lush greenery around. True to their signature styles, sinuous lines dominate the exterior and interiors. The lobby is filled with clean lines and curves. A grand, sweeping, cantilevered staircase wraps around a whimsical chandelier of glass balls resembling bubbles floating in the air. Bright whites and earth tones make the color palette, but a burst of color surprises the eye, as shown in a lone standing bright orange column right smack in the middle of the two structures. Colored glass cut in sexy shapes come in shades of pink, blue, green, yellow and orange. These are mounted on a dark wood paneled wall behind the long reception counter. The same colored glass accents are also used in the balcony railings overlooking the swimming pool. The changing room wall is also horizontally striped in those colors for a colorful wall backdrop to the swimming pool. A lighter colored tint in green, pink and blue is also applied in some of the glass curtain of the building.

Love is in the air in exciting Cagayan de Oro.
