Until recently, I had never actually bought myself a bathrobe because bathrobes seemed to be something my mother always bought — first out of necessity but eventually because it was such a good Christmas gift. Same thing with winter coats. Every few years, my mother would say, “You could use a new winter coat…” and off we’d go to do a little shopping followed by lunch. When she died, there were so many things I missed about her, but new robes and coats were not among them. Then last year — five years after her going, I took one look at my sad old bathrobe and another at my sad old winter coat, and for the very first time ever I realized that I was really and truly on my own. So what did I do? I did what she taught me to do. I said to myself, “You could use a new robe and a new winter coat….” Then I took myself shopping and I treated myself to lunch. Call me crazy, but I swear I wasn’t alone…
