The parable of the unproductive fig tree in

the vineyard approaches the same topic

from another angle. The owner of the

vineyard wants to get rid of a fig tree that

fails to bear fruit after three years. From an

economic perspective, his position is

perfectly reasonable: why should a non-

fruiting fig tree continue to sap the

goodness of the soil? Why not go for more

vines, more grapes, more wine, and forget

about the fig tree? The faithful or constant gardener, on the other hand, is like the

womb-compassionate God of Israel who cares about the soil itself and wants to

give the fig tree another chance, to turn it around and assist it to bear fruit, if the

owner will relent. At this mid-point in our Lenten journey, we might get in closer

touch with our compassionate “gardener” God and open ourselves to a more

expansive understanding of the pain of the planet.

Dear Parents and Friends

It is hard to believe that we are getting close to the end of our first term in 2019. It certainly has been a busy term and one that we can celebrate many achievements and successes. We have welcomed our new Prep children to SJV and many other new families. It has been

wonderful to see the many friendships and relationships blossom over the term.

Our current attendance level is 90.5%. Our goal is to keep our attendance level over 90% all year. Each day of school missed makes a difference, with the effect on learning accumulating over time. From an early age, if children are taught that they need to 'show up' for school and make a commitment, this positive mentality aids academic and career success and brings benefits in adulthood. If children are sick they need to be kept at home,

however, children tell us that there are times they are being kept home without being sick. We appreciate your support in encouraging and supporting positive and healthy attitudes

towards school.

We are currently preparing and planning for our school musical. Information will continue to be distributed throughout the next few months. We are currently looking for a videographer who could film the musical on one of the evenings and food trucks who can be available to

provide dinner for families. If you can assist with either or know someone who could provide

SCHOOL WIDE EXPECTATIONS

Our SJV School-wide Expectations:

Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Safe Be a Learner

Value: Service

To “Be of Service” as described in the First Letter of Peter 4:10, asks each one of us to serve others through our thoughts, words and

actions. This can be as simple as sharing a smile with someone through to giving up time to help someone in need. Both, St John

Vianney and Nano Nagle, were devoted people of service.

Project Compassion

We are now in Week 9 and our last collection to support Caritas, through Project Compassion, will be next Thursday 4 April. Thank you to all the families who have already sent in donations to support this worthy cause. This year the theme is ’Give Lent 100% - Lives Change When We All give 100%’. Last year we raised $1029 and were hoping to top this. We are very excited to share we have now exceeded this total. Over the last three weeks we have raised $831.60 In addition

to this, a portion of every fish and chip order our school placed last week which totalled $687.70 also went to supporting Project Compassion. So to date we have now raised $1,519.30. We are sincerely grateful to Grace Takeaway for organising over 450 individual orders for students and staff as well as subsidising

480 ice blocks so every student and staff member could enjoy a cool treat.

Stations of the Cross

Next Friday our Year 5 students will lead the school community through the Stations of the Cross, to journey with Jesus to Calvary and reflect on how he endured challenges and difficulties. During this journey we will be invited to be mindful of those around us who are carrying their own personal crosses and to be in solidarity with those who are suffering. Parents are welcome to join us at 11:30am for this prayerful journey. More

details about the location of the Stations will be emailed to parents next week.

Sacrament of Penance

We have a number of students who will be making their Sacrament of Penance next Tuesday night. They have spent a number of weeks preparing

for this Sacrament and we ask that you keep them in your prayers as they celebrate the next part of their faith journey.

Have a wonderful week and may peace be with you.

Naplan Online

In May, for the first time our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be participating in the Naplan test in an online format.

Today all students in Years 3 and 5 participated in an Australia-wide Coordinated Practice test. This consisted of a 45-minute Omnibus test (Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy). This was also a great opportunity to test our technical readiness for the Naplan online

testing period in May.

Parents are invited to visit the public demonstration site to familiarise with the type of questions and related functionalities available in the

NAPLAN Online assessment http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

Some of the key features include a range of question types, onscreen tools, timers and interactive navigation.

The demonstration tests cover a sample of possible questions and do not reflect the range of literacy and numeracy content or skills NAPLAN Online will assess. While it is helpful for students to become familiar and comfortable with the format of the online test, ACARA does not

encourage students to study separately for NAPLAN. That is why you will not find answers to the demonstration tests.

Further information about Naplan online is available on the following link NAPLAN Online information brochure for parents and carers (PDF, 487

Today was the inaugural SJV Readers Cup competition. Twenty-one teams answered 10 questions on each of the 4 set books. Our quiz master Mrs Simpson read out the questions and team members whispered furiously as they discussed possible answers, racing against the clock. Our judging team of staff diligently marked the answer sheets round by round until the final bell. Our SJV Readers Cup champions for 2019 are the

Readers of Oz - Mischa, Jessa and Jane.

Thank you to all our teams for reading and having a go - you are all remarkable readers!

For Moody Judy fans, Megan MacDonald is presenting at St Agatha’s Primary on 29 April. See the flyer for further details.

Children will borrow books for the holidays so they can continue to read daily over the break. Please ensure all overdue loans are returned as children with overdue books will unfortunately be unable to borrow for the holidays. Please call into the

library if you have any concerns.

Book Club has now been delivered, thank you for your support. From the library team we hope you have a relaxing, reading and very happy and holy Easter

break.

Happy Reading! Lisa Harris, Teacher Librarian

Message for the Week: Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. Steve Jobs

Bayside Cross Country Trials

Congratulations to all our competitors who performed personal best times at the Bayside District Cross Country Trials last Thursday. The standard of this competition is very high and the whole SJV community is very proud of the efforts and achievements of our competitors. We wish Mischa Templeman, who placed 5th, all the very best of success as she progresses to the next level in representing Bayside District at the Regional Carnival in May. Sincere thanks to Mrs Leigh Brown and Mr Jeff Bond, for their assistance in setting up, providing transport, assisting with preparations and officiating on the day. Sincere thanks also to the parents who supported the competitors with great enthusiasm and

encouragement. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

St Anthony’s Invitational Cross Country Carnival

The results are in! SJV celebrated great success again this year at the St Anthony’s Invitational Catholic Schools’ Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday. Our competitors won three divisions (Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Intermediate Boys) and placed second (2nd) in the Intermediate Girls, Senior Girls and the Aggregate Trophy. Congratulations to you all! Thank you to all the staff and parents who have assisted with the training of our competitors, preparations for the carnival, setting up and dismantling shade, officiating, ‘behind the scenes’ support with information letters, electronic data entry nominations, booking buses, and the great encouragement of all SJV competitors. Congratulations to all the competitors who

embraced the unique SJV team spirit in their encouragement of every competitor in the team. Well done! The photos say it all!

This carnival is the final inter-school sporting event for Term 1 and it is timely to thank all the SJV staff, parents, families and students for ‘pitching

in’ to ensure success for all!

SJV Showcase

This week we showcase Stella from Year 3 who swims with the Manta Rays Swimming Club. Stella achieved great success at the recent Club Championships and would like to recommend the club to aspiring

swimmers who are looking for a rich, engaging and fun physical activity that encourages ‘doing your best’.

We continue to showcase our students’ sporting achievements in outside school sporting activities. Information and photos for all sporting events (including local sporting events) can be sent to

[email protected]

Please be mindful that when sending in photos they must contain only SJV students due to privacy and

confidentiality legislation.

Thank you for your continued support of ‘all things sport’ at SJV.

Ladybugs/Bugs Training Shirt Donation I am collecting 2018 Wynnum Ladybugs Netball/Bugs Rugby training shirts to send to disadvantaged sporting teams and schools in the Solomon Islands. A team that could compete together in matching uniforms (which we take for granted each week) would be a source of great pride for some of these very disadvantaged communities. If you have a shirt that

you no longer need, please drop it in the collection box in the office. Thank you! Megan Prove
