Healthy Kids Day 2017

Healthy Kids Day 2017 was amazing! Our YMCA staff, local partners and volunteers were able to impact the lives of over 100 children by being intentional on educating and spotlighting what a healthy lifestyle is all about. We had many different stations for participants to visit - Kid Zumba, Building a Healthy Snack, Kid Yoga, On Land Green Band Test, Rock Solid Chiropractic, a Trivia Table and more - that promoted having a healthy spirit, mind, and body. We are very grateful for all our local partners that helped make this huge day a success too! Jimmy Johns donated multiple gift cards, Safeway donated $100 of food, and Rock Solid Chiropractic donated their time to come out and support us! Healthy Kids Day 2018 isn't all that far way, so mark your calendars for April 28, 2018 to join us again!

Don’t Mess with Lightning: When Thunder Roars, Go IndoorsQuick facts about a deadly force of nature

• According to the National Weather Service, about 25 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occur each year in the United States.

• Colorado experiences about 500,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes every year, and had the third-most lightning strike fatalities between 2005 and 2014.

• More than 70 percent of all fatal lightning strikes in the U.S. occur in June, July and August.

• Lightning can occur during “dry” storms that produce little or no rain.

• Lightning may strike as far as 10 miles from a storm.

• The air within a lightning strike can reach 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Outdoor safety tips

• There is no place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm!

• If you can hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.

• When you hear thunder, immediately move to a safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing, or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.

• If you are in or on open water, go to land and seek shelter immediately.

• Do not seek shelter from lightning under trees or under structures that have only a roof, such as an open-sided picnic pavilion.

• Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before leaving your shelter.

• If a person is struck by lightning, call 9-1-1 and get medical care immediately. Victims of lightning strikes carry no electrical charge, so provide first aid right away.

Indoor safety tips

• Unplug appliances and other electrical items, like computers, and turn off air conditioners. If you are unable to unplug them, turn them off.

• Stay off corded phones, computers, and other electrical equipment that put you in direct contact with electricity.

• Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths, and faucets.

• Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.

NO SOLICITING Have you received one of those annoying doorbell ringing sounds right when you were ready to sit down and enjoy an evening’s rest, only to find someone selling magazines when you answered the door? Recently, there have been numerous complaints about the solicitors who have invaded our neighborhoods. There have been several cases as late as 9:00 pm where solicitors have been peddling their wares, refusing to take “NO!” for an answer and scaring residents.

MSMD and the DRC have joined forces to deter these solicitors. Soon, there will be new signs posted at the main entrance roads to Meridian Ranch declaring it is “A COVENANT PROTECTED

COMMUNITY” with “NO TRESPASSING” and “”NO SOLICITING” permitted. These signs are not intended to preclude your local fund raising groups like the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and local school students from knocking on your doors at reasonable hours but rather the commercial vendors such as those selling magazine, cable TV subscriptions, roofing, plumbing repairs and landscaping, as examples. These signs may not deter everyone and for some, stronger action may be necessary but for most, this certainly should help. Be Safe!

June 2017 Design Review Council Corner

The DRC team has received an influx of improvement submittals! Please keep them coming our way so we can review them with the Board and get your approval out as soon as possible. We do understand you will need to get on your landscape vendor’s schedule. So, please review your plan prior to submitting it. Front yard landscapes have minimum requirements for trees and shrubs. Fences have wing set backs of a minimum of 5 feet from the corner of the home. Sheds and play structures have setback requirements for the side and rear of the yard, so make sure you are reviewing the Design Guidelines.

Community Clean-up – sponsored by The Design Review Council (DRC) - Scheduled for June 19th and the 20th!

Eight roll-off dumpsters will be placed throughout the community. The Garage sale is scheduled for June 17th, so while you are purging the unwanted items by selling them on Saturday, remember on

Monday and Tuesday the unwanted items from your yard can be disposed of. Please check out the website announcements for further information and sites where the roll offs from Iron Mountain will be located.

As we start off summer here are a couple of reminders for being neighborly! Being neighborly also increases home values as owners talk about how wonderful it is to live in Meridian Ranch!

• Take time to get to know your neighbor

• Socialize together

• Sit on your front porch

• Buy from area merchants (Good things are happening at the Shops at Meridian Ranch)

• Pick up litter

• Have Potluck Dinners

• Garden together

• Ask questions

• Start of tradition

• Ask for help when you need it

• Invite others for coffee

Please remember the DRC has a website for easy access of the Design Guidelines and the Covenants: www.meridianranchdrc.org; Splash page has your neighborhood on it, follow the mouse over the neighborhood, right click will take you to your DRC website. Design Guidelines, Covenants and the FAQ’s are posted on the front page.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!JULY 1, 2017

Lessons From Your Golf Pro At

Antler CreekGive Your Slice The Elbow: Some players like John Daly swing with their elbow flying out, while others like Sergio Garcia keep it in,

proving that it's possible to hit great shots with either method. However, my studies indicate that the flying right elbow position favors a fade ballflight while a tucked right elbow promotes a draw. If you struggle with slicing or have always wanted to develop a power-rich draw, then the right elbow may hold the answer. Plus, when you let the right elbow fly, it has the tendency to raise the right shoulder skyward, which almost always causes an over-the-top move during the downswing and an array of bad results.

The key for long-term success is to eliminate the faulty shoulder tilt and right elbow position at the top. The most efficient right elbow position for keeping slices at bay and promoting a draw is on or just inside the seam running down the right side of your shirt. When you place your right elbow in this general area, it allows the shoulders to turn level to the spine, making it much easier to drop the club inside on the downswing for maximum power and improved control.

Combine this with a strong grip (hand turned to the right on the club) and you will maximize your chances of hitting the perfect draw.

Falcon Dog Park:El Paso County has received a GOCO grant in the amount of $45,000 for the Falcon Dog Park, so thank you again for your support! The County is in the process of finalizing the grant agreement and anticipates procurement of contractors for fence installation and construction of the parking lot this summer. Mile High Youth Corps will construct natural surface trails. Completion of the dog park and grand opening ceremony is anticipated October, 2017.
