I would like to Congratulate all the winners of the competition in the October edition for a family ticket to the East of England Autumn Show. I hope you all enjoyed the day and a big thank you to everyone that entered.

On page 55 we have the Christmas postal dates. I thought this might be help-ful, so you have no excuse for not getting the Christmas cards posted on time.

If you have a local community event you wish to promote please contact us and we will be happy to include it in the magazine, also, please support your local businesses and don’t forget to mention you saw the ad in ‘The Viewer’.

A rallying call has been put out to the resi-dents of Peterborough to help local life-

threatened children by taking part in a fun-

run dressed as Santa.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) will

host the Peterborough Santa Run at Ferry Meadows Country Park on Sunday December

5th and budding fundraisers are needed to

make the event a success.

EACH cares for more than 50 life-threatened

children and their families in the Peterborough

and Fenland region. Care and support is ei-ther delivered at the charity’s Milton hospice

in Cambridge or in the family home.

Since last year’s Peterborough Santa Run,

support for EACH has grown significantly in the

city. A new friends group has been set up

and members are working hard to raise

money and promote the charity in the region.

EACH has also been chosen as Queensgate’s

charity partner for 2010-2011 and a number of

fundraising events will be taking place

throughout the year.

Karen Chesney, EACH events fundraiser, said:

“Ferry Meadows Country Park is such a beauti-ful venue- so why not sign-up, get sponsored,

take part, enjoy the fresh air and raise funds at

the same time. Even if you’re a spectator you

can have fun cheering on the participants

while enjoying the spectacular lakeside views.

“We need to raise £4 million in donations to deliver our services this year. This amounts to

£11,000 a day, every day of the year, which is

why fundraising events such as the Peterbor-

ough Santa Run are so vital to the continuing

work of EACH.”

The EACH Peterborough Santa Run takes

place at Ferry Meadows Country Park at 11am

on Sunday 5th December. The route is ap-

proximately 2.5km and is suitable for wheel-

chairs and pushchairs. It’s not a race, so you

don’t have to be an expert runner. You can

walk, jog or run - it’s up to you!

Adult entry is £10 and includes a Santa suit, while entry for those aged 13 and under is £5 and in-cludes a Santa hat. To enter, or for more informa-

tion visit: www.each.org.uk/events/santaruns

or call: 01223 205180 or 01953 715559.

PLEASE NOTE: People can sign-up on the day of the event if they don't have time to register online. They just need to arrive at Ferry Meadows Country Park in advance of

Firewood Factory

H aving extensively researched the firewood market for the past two years “Olive Grove Nurseries”

have decided to launch a partner business providing its own range of “Quality guaran-teed seasoned Firewood logs” to local households and businesses.

Our experience whilst researching the market was that the demand for firewood logs has grown tremendously over the past few years. Within the last year alone there have been 200,000 wood burning stoves installed in the UK. However supply of qual-ity firewood can often be regarded as “dubious” to say the least. Many of the logs that people purchase are literally in the for-est one day on your fireplace the next, the moisture content of those logs are far too high making the logs not only difficult to burn but also resulting in long term damage to flues and chimneys due to high amounts of resin build up.

One of our major concerns when look-ing at the firewood market was the difficul-ties that people were experiencing with transportation and the delivery of the fire-wood. The options that people are given when purchasing firewood seem to fall around;

Customers buying small 13kg net bags from the local petrol station

Inevitably meaning that customers are pur-chasing firewood that is wet and in a poor condition and can only be purchased in small batches.

Bulk buying half or full van loads of logs

The issues faced here are how you transport one or even two tons of loose firewood into your log storage area? And even more, what if you have had a full day at work; is that what you would call an ideal, practical scenario.

Internet purchases of builders bags

typically 0.8m2 However, once again there is the same issue of transporting the firewood from one place to the next. Most delivery compa-nies will not move the logs for you but rather leave the load of logs on the kerb-side creating more work than needed for the respective customer.

Our approach here at The Firewood Fac-tory is rather simple, helping to create a pleasant and professional service for our customers.

We guarantee that our seasoned logs are to a moisture content of below 28% for better burning and quality assured service. Our kiln dried logs are as low as 20% mois-ture content.

What we have done here at the Fire-wood Factory is developed a unique sack barrow bag (45x45x90cm) that typically holds the equivalent of 8-9 net bags. The added advantage to buying the firewood logs from us rather than the equivalent net bags that are found at local petrol stations is that we guarantee that our logs have been properly seasoned, and that our firewood is delivered by us right to your door, we even go the extra mile and transport the barrow bags filled with firewood to your chosen final destination or log storage area upon delivery.

NO KINDLING REQUIRED- JUST A MATCH!

Forget the need for extra kindles and fire-lighters, The Firewood Factory provide every-thing you need to “relight your fire” with a new and unique style of firelighters. Chunky Chip is a multi-purpose-all-in -one woodchip, lightly coated in a natural resin designed to light the fire with just the stroke of a match. Chunky Chip is also available in various fra-grances for different seasons to keep your fire smelling fresh.

To make sure that your needs are fulfilled accord-ing to our guarantees we offer a professional service and delivery that is FREE on all orders over 85 pounds or two sack bar-row bags of logs.

The Book of Qualities by Ruth Gendler This American title makes a beautiful present for the more sensitive, thoughtful types. Combining poetic language with visionary illustrations, the author portrays our emotions as clever characters. Excitement wears orange socks, Faith lives in the same apartment building as Doubt, and Worry makes lists of everything that could go wrong while she is waiting for the train. A marvellous and comforting book to treasure.

Loves Me, Loves Me Not by the Romantic Novelists’ Association For daughters, nieces, granddaughters or the troubled teen next door – this compilation of forty original stories from some of the best women writers of romance is a lovely book to get lost in, reigniting the flames of passion, love and faith.

Aliens Love Panta

their treasured collection of undergarments to children the world over!

Diary of an Amateur Photographer: A

Mystery by Graham Rawle When Michael Whittingham joins his local photography club, he finds a bizarre picture on a second-hand camera, which leads him head-first into the investigation of a 30 year-old unsolved murder. Compellingly weird and wonderful, this ‘scrap book’ is the perfect present for anyone with a curious mind. NB. The solution to the mystery is concealed in an envelope at the back of the book – so don’t peek!

I t’s been four years since Judith and Andrew Jacobs first opened the shop at Moor Farm, and it has gone from

strength to strength, the reason for this is that the level or service and quality of their local produce is simply unsurpassed.

They took over the farm nineteen year ago, and could not have imagined that they would end up supplying their own sourced produce direct from their farmyard and that they would open the modern store that they moved into at the end of last year.

Judith says “ we felt that the credibility and quality of our meat was being under-mined and that was extremely important to us. It has always been our aim to offer high quality meat reared to the highest standards, we had no wish whatsoever to become mass-market food producers, hence we had to look for alternatives.”

The beef and lamb being raised on their own farm, supplemented by the use of graz-ing land on the RSPB Whittlesey Marsh reserve. Little of what they sell has travelled more than a handful of miles. Even the pork, which they don’t rear themselves, is sourced from a like-minded farmer in South Lincs., and their range of high quality sausages are made on the premises.

Among the variety of other specialities sold at the shop are pork pies from Manor

Farm at Glatton, jams and chutneys from Sawtry, flowers from Milking Nook and walking sticks made in Newborough and lots more.

Most of the fresh vegetables are pro-duced on the farm and the rest travelling no further than Wisbech and Whittlesey. The cheese is the only thing that has travelled a little further, from the traditional areas of pro-duction.

Judith and Andrew also offer free visits for school groups and is registered with both FACE and CEVAS. They regard this as an im-portant contribution of the community.

It’s not just the incredibly low food miles and quality of the produce that make a visit to Moor Farm so special, it’s attitude. “One of the benefits of the shop is that we have cre-ated a better and more honest link with our customers”, Judith said “we can relate to what they want and meet their needs, advice on preparation, cooking and recipes are just another part of the services”.

So don’t delay, visit your local butchers for your fresh meat,

vegetables and lots of other specialities.

Christmas orders, including turkeys and poultry, now being taken

The Moor Farm Meats Shop is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm. You can also meet

up with them at the Peterborough Farmers’

market on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month and at the Sacrewell Farm market on the 1st Saturday

of every month.

The Farm is situated just north of Newborough, take Werrington Bridge Road to the Decoy and continue straight on for just over 1/2 mile, the farm is situated on

the right.

Health Foot Faults by Lorraine Mace

A t some point in our lives we’re all likely

to suffer foot faults. No, not the tennis

variety, but some irritating foot

conditions, the symptoms of which

might only arrive now, even though they

could have been picked up during the

summer.

Athlete’s Foot

Not by any means confined to athletes, this

fungal infection (tinea pedis) hangs out in

bathhouses, swimming pools and showers.

Typically transmitted in damp areas where

people walk barefoot, the symptoms are

easily recognisable. If you have scaling,

flaking and itching between your toes,

especially in the space between the fourth

and fifth digits, then you might have athlete’s

foot – even without the physique of an

athlete’s body.

Do not leave this condition untreated, as it

can spread. There are many effective over-

the-counter medications available, but

severe or prolonged cases should always be

referred to a doctor.

A word of warning: it is essential to complete

the recommended period of treatment as

disappearance of symptoms is not proof of

cure.

And for next summer, remember that

prevention is better than cure. Keep your

feet as dry as possible and avoid sharing

towels and footwear.

Onychomycosis

This terrifying-sounding condition is a fungal

nail infection which can result from other

untreated infections, such as athlete’s foot. It

accounts for around fifty percent of all nail

disorders and is more common in toenails

than fingernails.

Often wrongly regarded as merely a

cosmetic problem, you can recognise it by

thickening of the nail and yellowing or

blackening, with the nails eventually

becoming hard to cut and painful.

Left untreated, the nail may separate from

the nail bed and start to crumble. Failure to

address the problem at an early stage can

lead to a prolonged period of treatment

and, in extreme cases, surgery to remove the

infected nail.

Whilst good hygiene aids prevention, you

can become infected in many ways. These

include wearing shoes or socks that have

become wet, or which harbour the organism.

Improper fitting shoes, or injury to the toe or

nail, can provide a weakened area for the

fungus to take hold. It can also be

contracted in the same way as athlete’s

foot, but even household carpets and floor

surfaces can harbour this fungus.

There are various types of onychomycosis

and it is difficult to eradicate. Whilst there

are some effective over-the-counter

remedies on offer, if the condition persists you

should consult your doctor, who may require

laboratory tests to be undertaken.

Verrucas These painful growths on the soles of the foot,

caused by a viral infection, are also known

as plantar warts. They normally have a hard

edge around a soft centre, sometimes with

black spots, and often look like corns. The

continual pressure of standing or walking on

them causes acute pain.

As with athlete’s foot, they are

predominantly contracted in public

changing rooms and swimming pools.

Anyone with a cut or scratch on the foot is

particularly vulnerable.

Although verrucas can heal themselves, it is

better to obtain advice on treatment from

your doctor or pharmacist.

Travel Get your skates on!

W hether it’s for a bit of festive romance, frolics with friends or some family fun, skating on one of

the many outdoor rinks in the UK is an essential winter experience, and a great way to get into the Christmas spirit.

Over recent years, more and more ‘Winter Wonderlands’ have been opening up, transforming grey city centres and parks into fairytales with colourful lights, giant Christmas trees and carols. There’s plenty to do for all ages: cafes, markets and fairs accompany most rinks, and special sessions are available on the ice for beginners, tots and the over 55s.

All you need to have a go is some long socks, gloves, a hat and a warm waterproof jacket – and extra padding is also good for those finding their feet (or blades!)

Who can go? You don’t need to be Torvill or Dean to enjoy a little outdoor skating, but if you are taking children, it helps to have some experience on the ice as most rinks insist that under 10s are accompanied by an adult. If you’re thinking of taking a little one along, do check the rink’s minimum age before hand and ensure that the venue stocks skates in their size. Some operate mother and toddler sessions and those with disabilities are often welcome, with wheelchair access straight onto the ice – but do make sure you book ahead.

Many ice rinks offer discounted family and group tickets and for those who don’t wish to partake in the activity, there’s nearly always a cafe on the sidelines from which you can enjoy the skating with a mince pie or hot chocolate.

When to go?

Most are open throughout the Christmas period, but it’s well worth trying to get down mid-week for a quieter session. All rinks are closed on Christmas day, but do check individual websites for details.

The best rinks in the UK

Pet Insurance – Getting the Best

Deal for You & Your Pet

A s pet owners we never want to have to make a decision on treatment for our furry family members based on

cost, we want to do what is going to be best for them. However this can often be expen-sive, for example a broken leg can cost over £2,000 to fix, or a lifelong condition such as diabetes or a heart problem cost over £60 per month for treatment.

For many of us these kinds of costs would be difficult to cope with (and they certainly put our own free healthcare in perspective), however sometimes families have no alter-native but to make heartbreaking decisions about their pets, that they would otherwise not choose because of the financial implica-tions.

This is where pet insurance comes in and is why Vets tend to encourage you to have your pet covered. But beware, not all pet insurance is equal and if you don’t know to ask the right questions you could have a nasty surprise when you come to claim.

The cost of pet insurance will obviously vary dependant on the type of pet you have, as well as things like its’ breed and age, much like car insurance, the range of things covered by pet insurance can also differ. Making a policy that looked like a good deal based on it’s cost per month, a bad deal when for example your pets emer-gency treatment costs £2,000, but the policy limit (even for an accident) is a lot lower than this.

Here are a few other things you may want to ask when looking for the best price and cover for your pet:

Many policies on the market offer cover only for a limited amount of time and only a single ‘pot of money’ from which to claim. Will the policy cover your pet if it contracts an ongoing illness, and will the policy cover

your pet’s treatment for life?

Furthermore, if your pet is unlucky enough to suffer from multiple unre-lated conditions in the same year, will you be able to claim on each separately. Ask if the policies claim limits apply to each unrelated condition and if they recharge every year?

You should also ask what the excess for any policy would be, as most Vets will need this paid at time of treatment.

Pet insurance is a great way to protect you and your pet from the unforeseen future, ensuring that the funds are available to treat them should they need it. Most local Vets will be more than happy to advise you on a quality pet insurance provider so call or pop in for a chat.

I f you like your motoring with wind in your hair and lashings of excitement, then the

Abarth 500C will be right up your street.

The maker – Fiat Group’s performance arm – has just unveiled the drop-top version of its potent little city car and we’ve climbed

behind the wheel.

Packing a 1.4-litre 16v turbo-charged engine with 140bhp, the 500C may look small but

punches well above its weight.

That T-Jet unit is capable of propelling the car to 60mph in just 8.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 127mph – and all while you

soak up the rays with the top rolled back.

Abarth has stiffened the windscreen pillar to cope with the fabric roof, which folds back electrically like a long sunroof. It concertinas away, bunching up above the rear tailgate

when not in place.

The problem is, with the roof down, noise levels are high and the buffeting at speeds the little Abarth is capable of reaching can be uncomfortable. The electrical mechanism works quickly and at town speeds can still be operated, but for fast paced roads and motorways you’ll need

the lid shut.

The 500c really is a true hot hatch though – it feels a lot quicker than the 8.1 second to the 60mph time suggests. On the road, two roarty exhausts sing the car’s intentions and the engine has a pleasing growl to it when

stretched.

It grips superbly too and on a race track – where professional drivers demonstrated to Autoblog what the Abarth was really

capable of – it was clear the car is

entertainingly quick.

But it’s not all good news. From launch only a semi-auto flappy paddle gearbox will be available and sadly it’s not up to the job. In automatic mode, changes are slow and irritating. Flick the sport button on (a button you should rarely turn off) and use the paddles sees things get a little better – but you need to lift off the power every time you

change. And even then it’s still jerky.

The good news is a manual gearbox – which is good in the hard-top Abarth 500 – is

available from November.

Despite those impressive performance figures, the 500C is still quite frugal – it’ll do 43.4mpg on the combined cycle and emits 151g/km. Specification is high too with xenon headlights, parking sensors and

Blue&Me connectivity all standard.

Abarth told us that an Essesse performance upgrade was made available in November. This will boost power to 165bhp and reprogram the gearbox for faster shifts, but we can’t help thinking the standard car

needs the upgrade already.

It really is hard to see past that annoying gearbox and that’s a real shame as there’s little else wrong with the £17,500 Abarth

500C.

It’s fast, comfortable inside and most importantly isn’t a Mini Cooper S – and for buyers looking to stand out from the crowd that could be just the hook Abarth needs to

find it’s homes.

What can you buy the gadget fiend who’s got everything?

C hristmas is a headache if someone in your family is a gadget fiend because that person will already

have every high-tech toy they could possibly need. Don’t despair, though: it’s still possible to find gifts for the geeks in your life.

One of the best ways to delight a gadget fiend is to get them an accessory for something they’ve already got - although we’d recommend steering clear of cases and other cosmetic accessories, as these are often a matter of taste.

For camera fans there’s the superb range of Gorillapod go-anywhere tripods (£12 to £35 depending on camera size), and if you’re feeling flush the excellent and innovative Eye-Fi cards (£49.99 for a 4GB SD version) enable any digital camera user to upload their shots instantly via Wi-Fi. If they’re also an iPad owner you might like to buy them Apple’s Camera Connection Kit (£25), which not only copies photos from cameras and memory cards to the iPad, but also (unofficially) enables the use of USB devices such as headsets.

If you know an iPod addict, headphones are a good bet - the ones that come with most MP3 players tend to be awful, but better ones can be picked up for as little as £20 while £49.95 gets you a superb set such as Sennheiser’s CX380 Sport II, which are great for bass-heavy music and trips to the gym. There’s also a big range of external speakers for MP3 players: Logitech’s Pure-Fi Express Plus (£39.99) for the iPod looks a bit blocky, but sounds fantastic. A handy accessory for gadgets of all kinds is the FreeLoader, a solar charger that can power almost anything. Prices start at £16.99 for the simple Pico version, rising to £69.99 for the Pro, which is designed for heavy-duty batteries

Geeks Bearing Gifts

Most online retailers offer vouchers too, so for example Amazon.co.uk offers traditional printed vouchers as well as emailed ones for when you need a present in a hurry.

such as the ones you’ll find in digital SLR cameras. All FreeLoaders come with a range of adaptors to suit most gadgets. On a related note, the clever iDAPT i4 universal charger promises to banish cable clutter by providing a single dockings station that can charge four gadgets simultaneously. It’s compatible with over 4,000 different devices including iPods, mobile phones and even rechargeable batteries.

If that sounds too sensible, the bizarre Le Whif inhaler (£4.99 from Firebox.com) promises a calorie-free chocolate hit in a device that’s roughly the same size as a lipstick. The tiny device uses tiny particles to deliver the taste of chocolate (or raspberry, mint or even coffee if you prefer) in breathable form, and you get around ten puffs from a single stick. The sales blurb suggests that it “might even replace choccy bars and espresso as the accessory of choice amongst sweet-toothed fashionistas”; it won’t, but it’ll certainly be talking point on Christmas morning.

Another talking point is the Pet’s Eye View Camera (£39.99), which promises to reveal the secret life of your pet. Clip the lightweight camera to your dog’s collar, let him or her loose

and the camera takes up to 40 timed images that you can download to your PC or Mac. It’s of little practical value, of course, but it should amuse dog owners.

Last but not least, there are always vouchers: iTunes gift vouchers - available electronically or as gift cards from supermarkets and record shops - can be exchanged for iPod, iPhone or iPad music, movies or apps, while Microsoft Points give Xbox owners extra online purchasing power.

A nglia Ruskin University purchased Guild-house on Oundle Road in Peterborough

this summer.

Contractors are currently refurbishing the building and when this is complete the Fac-ulty of Health and Social Care will relocate from its Peterborough District Hospital site on Thorpe Road to Guildhouse. The faculty will offer its nursing and social work courses at Guildhouse as well as a range of continuing professional development for health and social care practitioners such as health visit-ing, school nursing and non medical pre-

The new campus offers our students studying there more spacious accommodation, bet-ter library and IT facilities and much im-proved clinical skills laboratories than the smaller site on Thorpe Road. We hope these facilities will also offer opportunities to the wider community in Peterborough such as local businesses interested in first aid or

health training.

We already work with local schools and col-leges whose pupils enjoy visiting and using our clinical skills labs in particular. We hope to move in the middle of March 2011 so that our new group of nursing students, who be-gin their course on the 31st March 2011, will

commence their studies at Guildhouse.

When the work is complete we look forward to inviting our new neighbours on Oundle Road and the surrounding areas to visit

Peterborough’s new university campus.

Gardening Wrapping Up Warm

by Ursula Buchan

‘A s the days lengthen, the cold strengthens’ is one of those faintly irritating sayings from bygone days.

Like most country saws, there was a lot of truth in it. Unless you live in the Scottish highlands, you are unlikely to experience a prolonged period of sub-zero temperatures until the year has turned, and the days are lengthening. So now is the time to think about protecting those outdoor plants that are not absolutely bone-hardy.

Many people believe that this is one task too many in the garden, and that plants must take their chance; either they will die, in which case you replace them with something different and potentially more interesting, or else they survive and you will have been justified in doing nothing.

But there are plenty of plants on whose survival I really do not wish to gamble. Apart from anything else, I find I can never depend on acquiring a plant a second time around. Most gardens will contain one or two slightly tender plants, which may suffer every year, even if only by way of frosted young leaves in spring. And there are herbaceous plants, which we don’t want to dig up each autumn and preserve indoors, such as dahlias, Salvia patens and Cosmos atrosanguineus.

Bubble wrap is almost ideal because, being transparent, it lets the plant continue to receive some light. It’s important not to wrap it tightly round the plant, which must be allowed to transpire without becoming sweaty and fungus-prone and, ideally, to photosynthesise once dormancy ends in the spring. Bubble wrap is also ideal for wrapping around inexpensive terracotta pots that are prone to frost-shattering. The growing medium in containers freezes more easily than soil in the border, so the roots of even hardy plants in pots are vulnerable to frost damage in cold spells.

In the past, dry straw and dried bracken were popular winter insulators, placed round a plant, loosely wrapped round and secured

with hessian. Neither is easy to come by now, and hessian isn’t cheap. You can still get it from Nutscene, for example, online.

For small plants, much the best material is spun ‘fleece’. Easy to get hold of, not expensive, and excellent for protecting the crowns of tender perennials, such as Salvia patens, because it can be cut to size and held down with pegs or by soil heaped on its edges. It can also be laid in more than one layer in severe weather. It is also ideal for throwing over a small plum or peach tree in flower, or a vulnerable hydrangea, if frost is forecast in early spring.

You can buy fleece jackets to slip over containers. Haxnicks supply them in three sizes. They also sell designer-print fleece jackets in ‘Autumn Leaf’, ‘Snowflake’ and ‘Green Leaf’. Fleece can be a bit flimsy for windswept places, easily blown away if not well secured. It rarely lasts more than two seasons, but is so easy to handle that it takes the hard work out of winter protection. In a hard winter, that could be the difference between life and death. So in the words of another irritating saying from my childhood, ‘wrap up warm or you won’t feel the benefit’.

Peterborough based tax and accountancy specialist TaxAssist Accountants gives advice on finan-cial matters to small businesses.

Q My staff have worked exceptionally hard this year and I would like to give them all a

bonus this Christmas. If I give them a cash

bonus, they will have to pay tax and Na-

tional Insurance on the money, but can I

give them vouchers or gifts instead?

A The gifts will be made as a result of the staff's employment with your firm and there-fore they will be treated as a benefit in kind (disclosed on year end forms P11D) and tax will be charged on the value of any such gifts. If you give the staff vouchers that can be exchanged for either goods or services, both employers' and employees' National Insurance will be charged on the value of the vouchers and this should be settled through the payroll. If you provide goods rather than vouchers, Class 1A National In-surance will be due and this will need to be paid in April next year. If you want to avoid the employees having a tax liability on any gifts, you could enter into a voluntary agreement with the Inspec-tor of Taxes so that you settle the tax and National Insurance due on the gifts on be-half of the employees. Such an arrange-ment is known as a PAYE Settlement Agree-ment (PSA) and once it has been agreed with the Inspector, you do not have to pro-vide details of the gifts, but instead pay Class 1B National Insurance on the value of the gifts and meet the tax liability on the total amount. If you wish to reward your employees in a tax efficient manner, there are other options available to you, such as making an em-ployer contribution to an employee's pen-sion plan - such payments are deductible for the employer and do not constitute a taxable benefit for the employee. To dis-cuss this and other tax efficient payments for employees, please speak to your local Tax-Assist Accountant.

Q I have recently expanded my business and am now looking to recruit additional

employees. I would like to offer help with

childcare costs to both new and existing

employees. What is the best way for me

to do this? A There are three ways in which employers can help with childcare costs that do not give rise to income tax liabilities for the em-ployees, being workplace nurseries, child-care vouchers and directly contracted child-care. Workplace Nurseries -An employer can pro-vide a workplace nursery and in such a case, the cost of places allocated to children of employees is exempt from tax and National Insurance Contributions, providing certain conditions are met. This exemption can be extended to cover costs for other employ-ees' children if they are working on your premises and use your childcare facilities. Directly Contracted Childcare - Assistance can be given by contracting directly with a commercial nursery or childminder, in which case the first £55 per week of the cost per employee will be exempt from tax and Na-tional Insurance Contributions, providing cer-tain conditions are met. Childcare Vouchers - Employers can provide vouchers to employees that can be re-deemed against qualifying childcare. the first £55 of vouchers per week (again, per employee) are exempt from tax and NI Con-tributions, subject to certain conditions being met. In the case of directly contracted childcare or childcare vouchers, it is impor-tant to bear in mind that the tax exemption limit of £55 per week is per employee, not per child. HM Revenue & Customs have a leaflet available on their website called 'How to help your employees with childcare' (leaflet reference e19). If you would like to discuss the tax and National Insurance implications of assisting employees with childcare costs.

ENGLAND Striker Opens New Physio Practice

in Hampton

E ngland and Sunderland striker, Dar-ren Bent, opened Cambridgeshire Sports Physio and Back Care’s new

practice in Hampton on Nov 28th. The new venture being opened has been set up to provide high quality physiotherapy treatment and excellent patient care to the local community. The Huntingdon based goal ace, the 3rd highest goal scorer in the premiership last season, was available for photos and signing auto-graphs on the day.

Cambridgeshire Sports Physio and Back Care was established in 2003, initially oper-ating from the home of Matt and Sara Taylor. Bent met the growing team a few years ago when he used their gym facili-ties for summer training and opened their Huntingdon practice when the business out-grew the Taylor’s home. The demand for quality, hands-on physio has led to a client base of thousands, including some of Cambridgeshire’s top athletes - runners, footballers, gymnasts, golfers, rugby, and tennis players. The physio team offer treatment for a wide variety of conditions, such as back & neck pain, joint problems and soft tissue injuries whether your injury originates from the office, garden, gym or sport. A variety of techniques such as soft tissue release (massage), acupuncture and electrotherapy are used in order to get you back to full function as quickly as possible.

“Darren is a bit of a local hero in Hunting-don but despite playing for Sunderland and living in the North East we are fortu-nate enough to have his support on spe-cial occasions like this when he comes home” says director Matt Taylor. http://www.physio.uk.net/index.php/about_us/news

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Relationships are high on the agenda this month. You may have more energy to pursue a new relationship, or put some energy back into an existing one.

The total lunar eclipse on the 21st could herald the end of a long chapter in your life. Although challenging, you’ll find that as the New Year starts, you are stronger than ever before.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 December brings lots of dynamic en-ergy for you to work on in your health and career matters. It is very important that you set the pace for whatever

needs changing in these areas of your life. Venus shines on love and passion, but the total eclipse on the 21st can bring an unexpected beginning or ending to a relationship

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 Expansive Jupiter and the Maverick planet Uranus remain in the monetary area of your chart this month. Hope-fully your financial review has been

successful. Venus in Scorpio lights up your home, and ideas for new and exciting changes could now be ready to implement, it’s a strong time for creativity.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22 Career matters are on the agenda this month; things that aren’t working can start to be addressed now. A new moon in forward thinking Sagittarius on

the 5th, signifies new beginnings with the focus on change. You can use this creative energy posi-tively by working on reorganization.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Your ruling planet, Venus, is travelling through the financial sector of your chart; it could be a very beneficial and lucky month for Librans. You’ll present

your ideas with lots of enthusiasm and confi-dence, which increases the likelihood that they are accepted and admired by those around you.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 Three planets in the financial sector of your chart highlight the need to check out your incomings and outgoings. You don’t normally take kindly to anyone

telling you how to manage your finances, but a little advice may be a good idea, as the energy to make more money is very strong now.

SAGITTARIUS NOV. 23 - DEC. 21 Three planets occupy your sign at the

start of your birthday month. Long term

goals need a review now and as you are

brimming with renewed energy and con-

fidence, this is a great time for being assertive and

direct when you are going after what you desire.

The new moon on the 5th brings very positive en-

ergy for a new beginning.

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Your intuitive powers should be working well for you this month. Although your love feelings remain deeply personal and private you should begin to trust your

instincts about relationships more faithfully. Energy changes on the 8th as Mars moves in to your sign and things become more straightforward.

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 Social relationships are high on the agenda this month. Difficult or compli-cated dealings with others tend to im-prove after the new moon on the 5th.

Money planet Venus, is at the highest point in your chart, indicating that professional matters are also in strong focus and financial increases are very possible.

PISCES FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20 Your professional life and your career are in the spotlight during December. You are motivated to make money and should feel that you are at the top of your

game. The 21st brings surprises and with abundant Jupiter moving forward in your sign you should be feeling at you most confident.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 Three planets in fiery Sagittarius, for an already fiery Aries, indicates an adventur-ous month ahead. A stronger need for personal freedom mean that distant ob-

jectives and foreign places could well be on the agenda. Ideas should be flowing and you’ll express them more freely, particularly by the end of the month.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Abundant Jupiter and exciting Uranus are both occupying the social sector of your chart during December; you want to

party - big time! This could also be a rather emo-tional month, as issues from the past come to light, particularly around relationships. Things should improve after the total eclipse on the 21st.

A LANDMARK moment was celebrated in October when a £20.6 million contract was signed to start the construction of a

new school in Orton.

The new Ormiston Bushfield Academy, which will have specialist status in mathematics, sport and performing arts; will be an exciting state-of-the-art building in Orton Goldhay.

Principal Eric Winstone, who was at the signing ceremony at Peterborough Town Hall, said: “This is the final part of a long process in order to make a new learning community. This project will benefit not only our students but also adults. The community in Orton will be able to use the 21st century building’s facilities, which will be open seven days a week.”

The former Bushfield Community College be-came an academy in September 2009.

It is hoped the investment in the school, which has enjoyed an improvement in exam results for the last two years, will benefit the surrounding area.

Councillor John Holdich, city council cabinet member for education, skills and university, said: “This academy will rejuvenate the Orton area which hasn’t had the best of reputations. Our job is to raise the standard of education of young people in Peterborough – after all, they are our future.”

Works timeline: CONSTRUCTION firm Kier will start work at the site of the new Ormiston Bushfield Academy on Mon-day, December 6. Work is expected to take about 18 months, ready for the start of term in September 2012. Once complete, the old buildings will be demolished to make way for an outdoor landscaped area. The 9,713 square metre academy will accommo-date 950 students, an increase from the current 730 capacity. It will include a 524 square metre library and cen-tres catering for young people and early years.

Principal Eric Winstone said: “My team and I worked with the architects on the design of the school. What we think we have got is a tradi-tional learning environment in modern facilities.”

The academy, sponsored by the Ormiston Chil-dren and Families Trust, will feature a curved building with a modern glass entrance.
