LaRussa is a grandson of Joe and Theresa Bruno. He said his torch-bearing efforts are inspired not only by his grandparents’ commitment to the St. Vincent’s mission, but by the example of cancer patients like Holman.

But there’s still work to do, said LaRussa. This Birmingham businessman is challenging donors to surpass the $750,000 remaining in the original total, reaching for a $2.5 million goal that will better provide for future needs.

Holman said she has been gratified at the community’s support of those professionals and the work they do so well.

“It’s just humbling and so personal to me, as a cancer survivor, to see everybody who has contributed, from someone buying a ticket to the Key to the Cure event to corporate and individual donors.”

“It’s absolutely a torch-carrying opportunity,” said LaRussa. “This campaign provides a way

for everyone to play a significant role in ensuring world-class, compassionate care for future generations.”

The St. Vincent’s 2014 Heritage Celebration Weekend in March honored more than the health system’s 115th anniversary. It also marked a ministry milestone, as 20 Daughters of Charity “passed the

torch” to those willing to continue to carry the light of this special spirit in Birmingham and beyond.

In 1898, the Daughters of Charity answered the call of the Holy Spirit - and the pleas of Father Patrick O’Reilly - to bring health care to Birmingham, an epidemic-prone city known for dangerous mines, factories and saloons.

More than a century later, the Heritage Celebration symbolized a final “torch passing,” as the Sisters officially entrusted their legacy to lay persons. Although the Daughters of Charity will be praying daily for Birmingham, their hands-on activities now shift to ministries in more than 2,300 other communities.

Heritage Celebration speakers expressed confidence that St. Vincent’s physicians, associates and area supporters would carry the torch, providing excellent health care for everyone, but most especially the poor. The weekend’s activities proved that new torch bearers span multiple generations. Those with many years of service or association with St. Vincent’s are designating financial gifts and fostering next-generation philanthropy values within their children and grandchildren.

“For 115 years, each initiative at St. Vincent’s has been rooted in extending the Gospel and proclaiming the healing presence of Jesus,” said Wayne Carmello-Harper, St. Vincent’s senior vice president of mission integration and chief philanthropy officer. “Dedicated donors sustain these critical efforts by making simple and significant contributions, volunteering their time and supporting us with their prayers. Each gift is essential for those who turn to us in a medical need.”

Each allows the Mission to continue. Each extends the Light to places of pain and uncertainty.

“As the Daughters of Charity officially leave Birmingham, we celebrate the light they have been for us and we strive to demonstrate and live their example and motto: ‘The charity of Christ urges us.’”

“This money was raised with a lot of effort by 15 eight to ten-year-old girls that are part of an afterschool club called Girls on the Run.”

The gift represented the program’s community involvement component. When Smith asked the girls how they could help their community, fourth grader Hannah Grace Bryant had an idea.

“I think we should give money to St. Vincent’s. My Memaw was in the hospital there, and they were very nice to her.”

The girls immediately agreed, proposing a bake sale. Smith said students worked hard to raise funds.

“They were really excited about what they were able to do. They knew it was for the hospital.”

Hannah Grace’s mother, Malana, knows Vivian Clark (“Memaw”) would be proud of her granddaughter’s support of St. Vincent’s. Hannah Grace was born at St. Vincent’s. She and her brother see their pediatrician there. But it was a visit to her grandmother’s St. Vincent’s Birmingham bedside that made a lasting impression on the child.

“When I felt it was very close to the end, I had the hard decision of whether to take the children to see her,” Bryant said of her mother’s extended illness. “I talked to the nursing staff about it. The afternoon

I took my children, Hannah Grace decided she would sing my mother a song. My mom just smiled and listened, and it was the perfect visit.

“Later, when my mother was in ICU, the staff was so supportive, allowing the family from out of state to say their goodbyes by phone. I think Hannah Grace heard us talking about that, because when I asked her why she wanted to do the bake sale, she said, ‘Because they took such good care of Memaw, and they told us how she was doing before we visited her.’”

Those memories will likely remain fresh for Hannah Grace, said her mother, because her grandfather, 85-year-old Denzel Clark, regularly reminds his family of the peaceful transition that happened there. “Every time we drive by St. Vincent’s, he tells us, ‘There’s St. Vincent’s. That’s where your Memaw flew right out of here, into heaven.’”

The Foundation staff is pleased to present the first issue of The Vigil, a newsletter for friends and

supporters of St. Vincent’s Foundation. The new name is twofold. First it references the iron and steel sculptures of the Sisters’ Vigil given by Dr. and

Mrs. Joseph A. Cunningham and created by Birmingham artist Brad Morton. The statue commemorates the arrival of the first four Daughters of Charity who founded St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1898. A replica of the statue greets visitors to all five of our facilities. Second, the name serves as a reminder of the watchful role of generous individuals, families,

corporations and foundations in supporting our ministry for the past 116 years. The vigilance of our donors and benefactors renews the original call to serve and sustains St. Vincent’s unique commitment to the value of each person as unity of mind, body and spirit.

Vigil

The renovation and expansion of the St. Vincent’s East NICU and labor and delivery area continue. Those physical improvements represent much more than updated facilities for everyone.

For physicians, St. Vincent’s associates and volunteers, progress toward the $6 million renovation goal represents next-generation ministry, since the work done here, within “the place where parents are born,” demonstrates the health system’s commitment to all families.

For some area families, St. Vincent’s East represents a Christ-centered facility of excellence, a joy and amenity-filled place where children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren are welcomed into the world.

A significant percentage of births here are to economically poor mothers referred by the St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency program. That program provides crucial prenatal care, resulting in the birth of healthier babies.

For everyone from eastern Jefferson, Blount and St. Clair counties, the expansion provides close-to-home access to St. Vincent’s private birth suites. The St. Vincent’s commitment to the value of every human life is reflected through this tremendous staff and in the System’s investment in this critical renovation project.

For those willing to carry the torch, the St. Vincent’s East expansion offers the chance to help welcome and care for more than 1,000 new lives each year.

St. Vincent’s East Mother and Newborn Campaign: What your gifts represent

Nan Priest, St. Vincent’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, came to a realization several years ago. As she worked on one of the System’s capital campaigns, she noticed high

net worth individuals were not the only donors making a difference in the future of regional health care. Even those who didn’t consider themselves wealthy were planning ahead, each establishing a giver’s legacy for family and friends.

“When we were in the midst of that campaign, I learned that anyone can donate a percentage of their life insurance or some other future funds that could make a long-term difference. It allows someone who doesn’t consider themselves a high-wealth individual to make a lasting and meaningful gift.”

Priest therefore devoted a percentage of her life insurance policy toward establishing a fund to support an innovation award. She says this type of gift enables her to link her 16-year work as a strategic planner with future efforts to encourage creative solutions.

“It also allows me an opportunity to discuss and kind of model my faith and my involvement in the community for my children and grandchildren,” says this Church of Brook Hills member and mother of two. “The truth is that every contribution, be it immediate or through a planned gift, helps us to fund and sustain the healing ministry of Christ.”

When the new Bruno Cancer Center was dedicated August 6 at 11 a.m., capital campaign co-chairs Val Holman and Benny LaRussa (pictured below) wanted attendees to be encouraged by stories of lives touched by hope and healing during the past three decades. Joe and Theresa Bruno’s initial gift enabled the first Cancer Center to open in 1989.

They also want those stories to challenge a new generation to “carry the torch” for cancer patients for the next 30 years, extending the existing Center’s tradition of excellent, holistic treatment into its new state-of-the-art facility. Holman is a breast cancer survivor who received treatment at Bruno Cancer Center. She said her experience proves that every contribution positively impacts patients and their families.

“When I was asked to co-chair this fund-raising campaign with Benny, I saw this as my way to give back to those people who provided not only medically-superior care for me, but emotional and spiritual nourishment in a patient-centered, Christian environment.”

LaRussa is a grandson of Joe and Theresa Bruno. He said his torch-bearing efforts are inspired not only by his grandparents’ commitment to the St. Vincent’s mission, but by the example of cancer patients like Holman.

But there’s still work to do, said LaRussa. This Birmingham businessman is challenging donors to surpass the $750,000 remaining in the original total, reaching for a $2.5 million goal that will better provide for future needs.

Holman said she has been gratified at the community’s support of those professionals and the work they do so well.

“It’s just humbling and so personal to me, as a cancer survivor, to see everybody who has contributed, from someone buying a ticket to the Key to the Cure event to corporate and individual donors.”

“It’s absolutely a torch-carrying opportunity,” said LaRussa. “This campaign provides a way

for everyone to play a significant role in ensuring world-class, compassionate care for future generations.”
