    1. This route commences at Foremark Reservoir carpark (DE65 6EG) situated off the Milton to Ticknallroad.

    2. At the main road, turn left. After 70 metres, turn right to go up a bridle path near BendallsFarm. Follow the track, go through gap adjacentto farm gate and up the hill. Continue along thetrack for approx 500 metres until it meets anotherbridle path.

    3. Turn right and uphill along this bridle path.Continue straight ahead past the entrance to afarm and a large tree. The path is now much lessdistinct as it runs along the edge of the field withthe hedge on the left.

    4. Go through a small gate and continue straightahead with the hedge on the right. On reachingthe top of the ridge, pass through the metal gateand continue through an open gateway and pasta large pond on the left. Go through the nextgate and continue with the hedge on the right.

    5. Turn left where there is a short track to the rightleading to a road. Follow the edge of the fieldwith the hedge on your right. Turn right at InglebyLane. Continue along the lane passing theentrance to Ticknall Village Hall on the right. Atjunction of Chapel Street and Rose Lane, turn leftinto Chapel Street and continue along this lane

into the open green space known as the stumps- opposite the entrance to Calke Abbey.

    6. Turn left, go through the gate and continuestraight ahead across the small meadow toanother gate. Continue straight on to go througha high gate into Stantons Wood. Continue throughanother high gate and on through fields andgateways following under telegraph poles to theegdge of Gorsey Lees Wood.

    7. Go through the open gateway and downhillstraight on through young silver birch woodland.Ignore the path on the left and continue to anopen field.

    8. Continue through the open gateway and straightout across the field. Turn right at far side of fieldand follow edge of field with hedge on the left.Follow the path which crosses over a ditch andcontinue across the field diagonally up to the edgeof Robin Wood.

    9. Go through the gate into Robin Wood and followthe main track straight on all the way as it climbsto a junction of tracks. Bear right along the trackand follow this to a gateway at the edge of thewood. Continue straight on to reach the Ticknall toStanton by Bridge road (A514).

    10. Cross the road and continue straight on withthe hedge on the right and follow the edge of thefield down towards the St Brides Farm Buildings.Turn left at the farm buildings and continue alongthe access road behind the houses to the mainroad. Cross the road and follow the bridle roadacross 4 fields. The path becomes clearer as itbecomes a farm track which cuts across a largefield bearing right at a telegraph pole and windsto reach an unclassified road.

A sunnyautumn day is a great time

to get on a bike and discover

    the countryside at its most

    colourful and beautiful. Heres

an idea for a cycle route.

It is an annual celebration observed onNovember 5 for more than 400 years followingthe Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when 13 conspiratorsplanned to blow up Parliament and kill KingJames I.

Fawkes was arrested while guarding explosivesthe plotters had placed beneath the House ofLords.

People in London lit bonfires to celebrate thefailure of the plot, and an act of Parliament waspassed to appoint the date as a day ofthanksgiving for the "joyful deliverance of JamesI". This act remained in force for 254 years, until1859.

To mark the occasion, here are 10 facts aboutGuy Fawkes, gunpowder and fireworks:

    1. Political protesters sometimes wear Guy Fawkes masks to protect their identity. You might recognize these masks if youve seen the film V for Vendetta, which is very loosely based on the story of Guy Fawkes.

    2. The only place in the UK that does notcelebrate Guy Fawkes Night is St. PetersSchool in York. Guy Fawkes went there asa boy and they refuse to burn his imagein respect for their former pupil.

    3. Guy Fawkes wasnt the mainconspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, buthe had one of the most importantroles. He guarded the gunpowderunderneath the Houses of Parliament, and had he not been caught, he wouldhave been charged with lighting it.

    4. Physicists from the Institute of Physicshave calculated that the 2,500kg ofgunpowder Fawkes hid would havewreaked damage almost 500 metresfrom the centre of the explosion.

    5. Fireworks were invented when aChinese cook accidentally discoveredhow to make explosive black powder -the early origin of gunpowder - duringthe 10th century. The cook accidentallymixed three common kitcheningredients. The result was colourfulflames.

    6. Fireworks arrived in Europe in the 14thcentury and were first produced by theItalians. The first recorded display wasin Florence. The first recorded fireworksin England were at the wedding of KingHenry VII in 1486.

    7. Dummies have been burned onbonfires since as long ago as the 13thcentury, initially to drive away evil

spirits. Following the gunpowder plot of1605, the focus of the sacrifices switched toGuy Fawkes' treason.

    8. It is said that the word guy actually comesfrom the name Guy Fawkes. It originallymeant an ugly, repulsive person but, throughout the years, simply became asynonym for man.

    9. One suggested origin for the word bonfireis that derives from 'bone-fire', and comesfrom a time when the bodies of witches, heretics and other misfits were burnedinstead of being buried in holy ground.

    10. The Houses of Parliament are still searchedby the Yeomen of the Guard before thestate opening which has been held inNovember since 1928. The idea is to ensureno modern-day Guy Fawkes is concealed inthe cellars.
