“Stir up the inner-fire, the gift God gave you….” 2Timothy 1:6
Fred Craddock tells the story of when he was invited to lead a lecture series
in Winnipeg, Ontario.
He arrived on Saturday night, and a snow storm blanketed the area. On
Sunday morning his host called and said, "Craddock, this is a surprise to
everyone. We cannot even get there to the hotel to help you. In fact, we had to
cancel the lectures." Craddock asked, "Well, what am I to do?" His host said,
"Well, about a block and a half to the right of the hotel entrance is the bus
depot. In that bus depot is a little coffee shop, and perhaps you can go there
and find breakfast." Craddock said, "It was packed with everyone trying to
find a warm place." As he entered, there were a few that scooted over, and
he was allowed to sit down.
A moment later, the door opened again. "Shut that door! You're letting out all
the heat." A lady came in, and they scooted down a little more and she found
a seat. A large man with the greasy apron came over, "What do you want?"
"May I have some water, please?" He brought her the water. "Now, what do
you want?" "Water is fine." "No, I mean what do you want?" "The water will
be okay." "I mean, what do you want to order, Lady? We've got paying cus-
tomers here. What do you want to order?" "Nothing." "Listen, Lady, if you
don't order, you can't stay." "Can't I just stay long enough to get warm?"
"Listen, Lady, order something or leave!"
With that the woman got up to leave; but as she got up, the people on each
side of her got up. Then the people on each side of them got up. As she
started to leave, the entire restaurant got up to leave. Then the large man
with the greasy apron said, "Oh, now wait a minute. Everybody sit back down,
she can stay." He even brought her a bowl of gray soup. Craddock asked the
man next to him, "Who is she?" The man said, "I never saw her before in my
life. But if she ain't welcome, ain't nobody welcome."
Craddock said in that new atmosphere, he began to eat his soup and found to
his surprise it wasn't too bad. In fact, it was almost good. As he finished the
soup, he had the feeling that somehow he had tasted it before. Something in
the soup reminded him of something. As he walked out the door and looked
back upon that group of people, he saw that woman sitting there – then he
remembered.
It reminded him of the bread and wine of communion.
Until later…..grace and peace! Rik

Studies Abound
One of my favorite times of the year is when school supplies begin to appear in the stores.
I just love the smell of crayons, pencils and paper. As I turn my attention to Fall, I become
eager to study and learn. Brian McLaren’s new book, We Make the Road by Walking: A Year-
Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation and Activation, provides the framework for
two new studies beginning in August.
Short weekly readings invite you to:
cultivate an honest, intelligent understanding of the Bible and of Christian faith in the21st century;
engage with discussion questions designed to challenge, stimulate, and encourage;
re-imagine what it means to live joyfully and responsibly in today’s world as agents of God’s justice,
creativity and peace.
One group will meet on Monday mornings at 10 am at the church beginning with an orientation session on
August 18th. The group will meet weekly with time off for holidays. The sessions are planned for one hour
each week.
The second group is geared towards the younger adults in our church and community and will meet at the
home of Jill and Casey Stephens on Thursday evenings at 7 pm. Participants will join in a potluck supper and
meet for two hours. This group begins meeting August 28th.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 405-721-1190 or [email protected]. I look forward to leading
this study and seeing where it will take me and the church. Kathryn Witzel
Julie Whitson will lead a Beth Moore study ,Children of the Day, beginning Thursday, September
11th, from 6:00- 7:30 p.m. in Room 103. The study is based on 1 & 2 Thessalonians and will
last 18 weeks. The cost of the workbook is $16.00. During this study, you'll learn how to let go
of past mistakes and discover your circumstances are not coincidental - God's timing is impecca-
ble! Whether you are facing family crises, medical diagnoses, relationship troubles, doubts, or
fears, you'll come away encouraged that even though it may not feel that way, you are exactly
where Christ wants you to be! A sign-up sheet is ready for you in the church lobby!
A new small group study will begin in September: Wild Goose Chase: Reclaim the Adventure
of Pursuing God, by Mark Batterson.
“Celtic Christians had a name for the Holy Spirit–An Geadh-Glas, or ‘the Wild Goose.’ The
name hints at mystery. Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God cannot be tracked or tamed.
An element of danger, an air of unpredictability surround Him. And while the name may sound
a little sacrilegious, I cannot think of a better description of what it’s like to follow the Spirit
through life... Most of us will have no idea where we are going most of the time. And I know
that is unsettling. But circumstantial uncertainty also goes by another name: adventure.”—
from the book
Be watching for further information.
The Crusaders Sunday School class invites you to join the study series from The Wired Word. You
may jump in at any time, as each Sunday is a “stand alone” lesson generated by current events.
Applicable scripture is presented, then the moral principles, implications, and courses of action
are discussed. A sample lesson can be examined at http://www.thewiredword.com. All are
welcome to participate with the Crusaders in Room 104 during the Sunday school hour.
Questions may be addressed to Dale Smith at [email protected].
