Wasn’t Memorial Day weekend a great time to relax, enjoy some downtime, visit with family, etc.? My friends and I had quite a bit of fun strolling through the village and hitting up all the yard sales. Of course, you could’ve used the time to “finally get those flowers planted.” I’m wondering just how many of you spent the long holiday weekend toiling on pre-summer outdoor projects. No barbeque and no relaxing. Loving family members staying far away for fear they would be sucked into your exhausting and endless list of late spring chores. I’ll wager quite a few of you were relieved

to get back to work on Tuesday! But what a weekend – more than once I overheard someone exclaim, “This is why we live in Upstate New York.” Yes, the sun was glorious, the temperatures were toasty warm and the mood was definitely upbeat! This combination, along with the long holiday weekend, made for a Memorial Day holiday in the record books as one of the best. So, dear readers, I’ll leave you with this: always remember to stop and smell the roses, but never forget how much work it takes to get them in the ground and blooming!

Allegany Nordic Sets FundRegional Cross-Country Ski Group Establishes Fund for New Equipment

OLEAN, N.Y. – Allegany Nordic, a group of regional cross-country skiing enthusiasts, has established a new fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation to assist the cross-country skiing program on the Art Roscoe Trails of the Allegany State Park. A primary purpose of the fund will be to purchase new trail grooming equipment, according to Karen Niemic Buchheit, CRCF Executive Director Founded in 2006, Allegany Nordic is an association of Nordic skiers organized to advance the sport of cross-country skiing at Allegany State Park, working closely with the

park administration as well as independently. Allegany Nordic’s members hail from all over the Twin Tiers, as well as Buffalo and even Southern Ontario. Allegany Nordic has organized numerous trail workdays to address trail drainage and vegetation cutbacks, sponsored skiing activities and clinics, advocated for improved grooming, secured grant funding, lobbied legislators, inventoried and mapped trail culverts, and networked through various community and economic channels, and established a website for skiers to blog timely trail reports.

“Partnering with CRCF is a win-win scenario,” said Andrew Dickson of Jamestown, N.Y., co-organizer of Allegany Nordic. “We are presently an unincorporated group, so CRCF will be able to assist us with nonprofit administrative support which will give us more opportunities to advance our development objectives.” “The future of the skiing prog Donations to the Allegany Nordic Fund can be made in care of the Community Foundation at 120 North Union Street, Olean, and online at www.cattfoundation.org. OGH Hosts Yearly ReceptionHospital Reception Held for Residents in UB Rural Track Medicine Program

Olean General Hospital (OGH) hosted its annual reception on Thursday, May 26 for residents in the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo’s rural track family medicine residency program. The program, which is affiliated with Olean General, provides residents with a comprehensive exposure to the practice of medicine in a rural environment. “Our hospital is committed to the education and training of future physicians through active involvement in medical education at multiple levels,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System and member hospitals Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean General Hospital. “We’re pleased to be affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo and sponsor the only rural track family medicine residency program in New York State.” Program residents spend an initial year in Buffalo and their second and third years in

This year, the hospital recognized the graduation of Priyanka Patnaik, MBBS and Nupur Batra, MBBS from the program. Two residents—Anil Kopparapu, MBBS and Harpreet Singh, MBBS—will be entering their third and final year, while Kelvin Gold, M.D. and Amandeep Singh, MBBS will be transitioning from Buffalo to Olean in their second year of residency. Dr. Kopparapu will take over as chief resident, and will be responsible for scheduling didactic teaching sessions with area doctors for residents, along with managing the on-call schedule for members of the program. “With New York State’s only rural track family medicine program, our likelihood of recruiting and retaining quality physicians to the local area is significantly enhanced,”

said William Mills, M.D., MMM, CPE, FACPE, CMSL, FAAFP, Senior Vice President of Quality and Professional Affairs for Upper Allegheny Health System. “This program not only benefits the residents involved, but it has a positive impact on our community, our hospital and our patients.” Olean General Hospital is a member of Upper Allegheny Health System. Billboards Keep it SimpleUpper-Allegheny Health System Launches New Marketing Campaign

Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH), member hospitals of Upper Allegheny Health System, have launched a health education and wellness campaign to increase awareness regarding the importance of regular mammograms and screening colonoscopies. “As community hospitals, our missions to the Olean and Bradford communities underscore a responsibility to positively impact area health status,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System, Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean General Hospital. “Because the incidence of cancer in both hospitals’ service areas significantly exceeds state averages, we believe this campaign is consistent with that responsibility.” The campaign includes new area billboards prompting individuals in our region to receive regular mammograms and screening colonoscopies. The hospitals are also distributing postcards with photos of the billboards and the American Cancer Society’s (ACA) guidelines emphasizing the importance of mammograms and colonoscopies, which will be available in hospital waiting areas and various physician offices in the area. Individuals are encouraged, via the postcard message, to consult their personal physician to schedule these important examinations. According to the American

Cancer Society, yearly mammograms are recommended for all women starting at the age of 40. Beginning at age 50, both men and women should have a screening colonoscopy. Current research shows that about 12 percent of women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Nationally, breast cancer death rates are higher for women than any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the U.S. Overall, according to the ACA, about 1-in-20 individuals will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime. Both breast cancer and colon cancer can be prevented and successfully treated if detected early. For more information about Upper Allegheny Health System, visit www.uahs.org.

For the past 49 years, one establishment in particular has been making you feel at home in Salamanca, and Joel Talbot has been a huge force driving that feeling. “I want to make everyone feel like family … We really do have a family atmosphere here,” said Talbot, store manager of Parkview Supermarket. A life-long resident of Salamanca, Talbot has worked for Parkview for over 37 years. At 17 years old, Talbot started out in the meat department and became the meat manager for 34 years, eventually moving up to store manager for a little over a year now. “(Parkview) has been my life for all these years,” Talbot said. “It’s been a dream of mine to take over the store … it’s all part of me.” In 1962 Bert Simmons and Ralph Ward opened Parkview Supermarket together. Simmons and Ward were both individual owners in Salamanca, but decided to create a venture together, thus creating Parkview Supermarket. Now, the supermarket is owned by Olean Wholesale, which owns four other stores and supplies numerous others. Since then, Parkview has always been located at 545 Broad St., but has since expanded four times. To put it into perspective, Parkview Supermarket is twice as large as

the Tops located in Ellicottville. Talbot said that Parkview Supermarket is a full-service store with carryout, a meat department and deli, a produce section and a full bakery. It even carries ammunition and soon will be getting hunting and fishing licenses. “You name it, we do it!” Talbot said. “We brought in a lot of things to make everybody happy.” One thing that makes everybody happy is Parkview Supermarket’s king-sized donut, which is at least six inches high, Talbot said. The king-sized donut is a unique signature of Parkview. However, that is not all they do. Besides baking donuts, the bakery makes cookies, muffins, rolls, graduation cakes and other special occasion cakes – everything fresh! The store is open everyday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., including the bakery and deli.

New this year, the supermarket will be opening a farmer’s market right in its parking lot from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. In just two to three short weeks the farmer’s market portion of Parkview Supermarket will be open to public. According to Talbot, this is just another way for Parkview to make everybody feel at home. “We do everything for our customers …that’s why we’re still here,” Talbot said. “Whatever they want, we try to go out and get it if we don’t have it.” “The best part about the Parkview Talbot said “is all they have to offer: “if you want full service, you’ve got to come here – we have anything and everything!” So if you’re looking for a place to shop that has everything, stop by the Salamanca staple, Parkview Supermarket for all your needs.

Laura Solly’s face should be familiar in Ellicottville. Solly owns and operates Daff on Washington Street, teaches yoga in town and helps plan Women’s Weekend each year. Daff specializes in men’s and women’s clothing and shoes with a touch of western influence. Solly said the apparel is distinct to the area and for the most part comes from small companies that cut-to-order each season. “They are all specialty items that are hand-selected,” Solly said. She said the store sells more than 50 styles of men and women’s comfort footwear. “There’s basically a shoe store within the clothing store,” she said. Solly sells children’s rain gear at Daff, too. “I carry the boots, jackets and umbrellas for the kids.” Also unique to Daff are the Hamilton Blankets, or Native American blankets, that Solly said it carries. Daff is open seven days each week: Sunday-Thursday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Solly also teaches yoga two times a week at the community room at the Ellicottville Memorial Library on Maple Street. The Monday class begins at 5:30 p.m. and the Thursday class begins at 8:30 a.m. “It’s more than just an exercise,” she said. “You’re stretching and you’re relaxing but there’s also that mind-spirit connection that

allows you to focus on your breathing and just be really touched.” Solly has helped plan Women’s Weekend since it first began five years ago. “Grace Kell is the brain behind it,” she said, “and a group of us women got together and formed a committee to brainstorm ideas for it.” Solly said the brainstorming has evolved and constantly grown throughout each year. “It’s really developing, though, and this year we’ve made it more concise and focused it around the Sky High Adventure Park,” Solly said. Women’s Weekend 2011, set for June 10-11, well be “an outdoor adventure.” Solly said Zumba, Tai Chi, hiking and yoga would also be part of the weekend’s festivities. She would be leading the yoga and Finger Lake trail guides would lead the hiking. Pre-registration will be required for participation in Women’s Weekend. “The whole idea is to bring women into town together,” Solly said. “Hopefully, partaking in Women’s Weekend will give them the opportunity to go out together and eat, shop and check out the nightlife.” Solly appreciates spending time and bonding with friends, which is why she got involved with women’s weekend five years ago. “We have a lot of women who own businesses here in

town,” Solly said, “and it’s a great thing that we are all so connected.” For more information or pre-registration to Women’s Weekend call the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce at (800) 349-9099. For more information about Daff visit the store at its 17 Washington St. location or call it at (716) 699-2293.

Day Trippin’The Villager Invites You to Experience the Flavors of Life in Tuscany

BY BRYAN S. SMITh

Travel plans of many savvy adventurers include Italy, the “fashionable” destination of this millennium. Tourists are flocking to Tuscany cooking schools and palatial villas for genuine experiences that in-clude sightseeing, regional cuisine and an abundance of fabulous wines. Today, Italy is the number one vacation des-tination, recently surpassing France that held that distinc-tion for many years. Horizon Club Tours, a di-vision of AAA of Western & Central New York, is partner-ing with Jeanine Zimmer, pub-lisher of The Villager newspa-pers, to host tours to exciting destinations regionally, na-tionally and internationally. The first tour Jeanine will host is an exclusive trip to southern Tuscany from Sept. 9 – 16, 2011. Immerse yourself in the lively rhythms of life in Italy on an unforgettable journey to some of its lesser known trea-sures. Guests will stay at Villa Poggiarello, a farmhouse dat-ing back to the 1700s that has been carefully renovated to its original characteristics. The villa is in the municipality of Roccastrada, 90 km south of Florence. Along with Jeanine, your host and guide in Italy will be the charismatic Romeo Innocenti. The son of famous master Italian chef Carlo Inno-centi, Romeo and his wife, Fed-erica, create an unforgettable Tuscany experience for all of their guests. Once you arrive in Rome, you’ll be met by Romeo and travel north along the western coastline with the Tyrrhenian Sea on your left and gentle sloping hills on your right. Ol-

ive trees and grape vines as far as you can see offer a view of perfection. As you enter the Tuscany region, medieval hill-top cities and towns dot the countryside and stand majesti-cally secure. This truly unique region of Italy protected itself eons ago from invading Ro-mans, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Lombards and Franks. You’ll be instantly overwhelmed by the magnificence and beauty that surrounds you. Villa Poggiarello is located close to the seaside in a greatly celebrated region known as “La Maremma.” Beautiful beaches and seaside villages are close by and the estate is surrounded by towns that sit on the summits of their landscape. It is truly a site to behold. Villa Poggiarello has well over 100 hectares of olive groves and vineyards produc-ing white, red and rosé wines of exceptional quality. Tuscan food of this region is very provincial, made with lo-cal ingredients. Eating in Italy is an experience to be savored with time and pleasure. Romeo adds his own character and tal-ent at Villa Poggiarello. Here, he teaches his guests “La Cuci-na Povera Toscana” (Tuscan country cooking) with a sea-

food twist. When you are not in the kitch-en, you will tour the southern Tuscany region and explore numerous fascinating cities, towns and villages, including Siena, Pitigliano, Massa Marit-tima and the seaside village of Castiglione della Pescaia, to name a few. Wine tasting is mandatory in Tuscany, where the wine of the region is unparalleled. You’ll visit and taste the wines of Montalcino where they make the famous Brunello. The drive to Montepulciano, where Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is produced, is spectacular. Wines of the finest quality are also pro-duced in Scansano, home of the famous Morellino di Scansano. But, most of all, the people of Tuscany are wonderful. The in-timacy and personal attention you receive will add to the rich memories you’ll cherish forev-er. You’ll take back home with you the pleasure of a true in-ternational cultural immersion, cooking foods and drinking wines from this magical place called Tuscany. As Romeo says, “I wish our guests will go back home with the idea of living more the Tus-can Way.”

The first tour Jeanine will host is an exclusive trip to south-ern Tuscany from Sept. 9 – 16, 2011. Immerse yourself in the lively rhythms of life in Italy on an unforgettable journey to some of its lesser known treasures.

The “Liftetime Achievement” Award was honored to the late James Brundage who passed away last October. Brundage was a dedicated member of the Salamanca Community where he served several years working to better the community’s youth as both President and Vice President of the Board of Education. He was integral in the AdHOC Committee for the recent renovation and expansion of the school building project. He

served on numerous statewide and community committees and advisory boards. Brundage was a well-known and well-respected member of the community. Several members of the community, the Chamber of Commerce and Brundage’s family cited that Salamanca is a better place due to his personal efforts. Family members of the late Jim Brundage were in attendance to accept the award on his behalf. The evening concluded with a large thank you from the Chamber of Commerce to the community of Salamanca, The Seneca Nation of Indians, Seneca Gaming and Entertainment and the Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel for sponsoring the nights events.

Architectural DigestLuxury Living at Thornbush Trail

STORY AND PhOTOSBY JOhN ThOMAS

STAFF WRITER

If you’re a regular reader of this column you know that sometimes I have a chance to review more than a single property for sale. So, it’s not unusual that this week features two condos, but what is different is that the two properties are right next to each other. Similar condos, different owners, both for sale. Both are located at the start of Thornbush Trail, almost on top of the front door of Holiday Valley. The larger of the two condos is 109. The first thing you notice when you pass through the front door is the spectacular two story bank of windows along the bay wall in the living room overlooking the Village. The half octagon shape of the bay wall helps lift the room out of the ordinary, and the cathedral ceiling adds to the

drama of the room. Outside the windows the trees create a green tapestry that sway gently in the breeze, and frame the view of the ski slopes of Holiday Valley. On the right is a gas fireplace; its stone facing rises all the way to the ceiling, high overhead. In the kitchen the granite counter tops, oak cabinets and tile flooring create a sophisticated stage for the cook. The stainless appliances add a sleek accent. The back of the work counter doubles as a breakfast bar or a place for the guests to converse with the cook. Just off the dining room is a glass and wood door that leads to the deck that travels along the back of the condo. On this floor are a full bath, a bedroom, and access to the garage. Upstairs the master bedroom suite features another gas fireplace, and its own private deck and master bath. The second bedroom also has it own bath, making it a second master

suite. A surprise awaits on the lowest level. There is a large family room with room for a home office, entertainment center, air hockey table, and bedroom area. A door leads to the walk out patio. Unit 110 is practically the mirror of the first condo without the garage, but in front of the condo is parking for three cars. The entry way is equipped to be a mud room, with a bench and shelves for wet boots. Stepping into the living room the mirror effect is obvious only because I just left the first condo. The same dramatic two story bank of windows is here in the bay wall. Again the trees fill with view with swaying green; an effect almost like sitting in a tree house. On the left this time is a stone fireplace and river rock chimney. The kitchen features dark cherry cabinets, and gray granite counter tops. A handsome combination is perfectly accented by the stainless steel appliances. Here also is a breakfast bar and guest perch. The light brown walls, add an extra touch of warmth. The door by the dining room also leads out to a deck. Before I head upstairs I check out the bunk room, perfectly sized for a couple of

growing kids. At the landing of the stairs to the second floor is a sleeping alcove with enough room for a day bed or small office. The master suite has a stone fireplace for the bedroom and a generous sized bathroom that features a whirlpool tub/shower combination. The same warm earth tones from the kitchen are reflected here. By now I’m not surprised by the family room on the lowest level. This one is pleasantly furnished with an electric fireplace and entertainment center. There is also room to set up a bed for an extra sleeping area. At 2100 square feet Unit 110 is the smaller of the two, but both homes are plenty big enough for an active family as either a full time home or vacation get away. With Spring finally starting to bloom it’s time to think about Summer sports, and these condos put the Holiday Valley golf course and the new Sky High Adventure Park is practically at your front door. In Winter would I even have to mention that popular sport that Ellicottville is known for? For more information on these units contact Dave Blanchard, GRI, Assoc. Broker at Holiday Valley Realty Company 716-699-3954.

some concern that cars preparing to turn in could cause congestion during times of student activity. Houses nearby along Route 417, once considered for removal under a previous project, will remain. A public hearing for the Bonaventure Square project will be held Wednesday June 8 at the Allegany Senior Center on Birch Run Road. The County Planning Board voted to approve the Bonaventure Square project with certain advisories. Bishop stated, “First, consider reducing parking and adding more open spaces or gathering places, such as patios, gazebos, and benches. Also, review the landscaping along Route 417 to ensure it is of sufficient height to screen parked cars from Route 417. Third, ensure that the main entrance off Route 417 is adequate for all cases, so the cars attempting to enter the Bonaventure Square project are not forced to queue up on Route 417. And rather than (construct) an eight-foot- high white privacy fence encircling the property on three sides, consider instead using landscaping, both existing and new, that would allow the project to blend in better with the surrounding neighborhood.” Also coming up for review during the County Planning Board meeting was a special use permit for a gravel mining operation on Wolfe Road in the Town of Dayton. The board originally received the request from the town back in January, but the plan lacked any form of SEQR (environmental) review. Part of the parcel in question is in an agricultural district, and abuts several other farming district parcels. The Town of Dayton supplied the information needed to continue with the review. Bishop said, “They’re

going to mine gravel, and basically the whole parcel is in a 100-year flood plain. Part of it is also in a DEC wetland. Also, the applicant plans extensive hours of operation, Monday through Saturday, with some hours on Sunday for the mining of gravel.” The town would apparently be allowed to set a deadline or a time limit for the special use permit. The County Planning Board finds that the proposed gravel mining operation has no significant county wide or inter-municipal impact, with some advisories. These are to, “Consider further limiting the hours of operation from the applicant’s original request. Consider setting a time limit for renewal of the special use permit. And consider moving the entrance to the gravel mine further away from the existing residence at 8679 Wolfe Road.” Board members voted unanimously for approval. The board also discussed an environmental review of the Onoville Marina, and a lease agreement between the marina and the Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the marina. The lease expires in 2026. The proposal is to extend the lease agreement to 2076. The way the current lease is written, Onoville Marina is allowed no capital improvements. Cattaraugus County and Onoville Marina are proposing more campsites, and other recreational and infrastructure improvements, such as an outdoor amphitheater, pool, and pavilion. The marina approached the Corps in order to proceed with their project, deciding to renew the lease at this time, in order to include the improvement project. The Planning Board’s annual meeting is coming up July 27th. Also, members received copies of the Board’s Annual Report for 2010, which must be submitted to the County Legislature each year. Each

legislator has already received a copy. Board member Robert Keis updated other members regarding the three-county broadband project, under the direction of the Southern Tier West Regional Planning Board, “Which is moving forward.” Keis said, “A lot of towns are contributing $5,000 towards the general overall project, with a significant portion of the funding coming from an ARC (Appalachian Regional Commission) grant. Over the course of this year, you should see it (broadband) move at least half way across Cattaraugus County.” Keis noted they’re trying not to erect any new cell towers, and that they are pretty much using existing towers. “We’ll end up with a high majority of the region covered, at around 95 percent.” The broadband service will come through a private provider, but is a taxpayer-sponsored operation. Keis pointed out that a few towns thought of providing broadband themselves, but it would be much too expensive. Individuals will choose from three tiers of service. Keis said “We’re (Southern Tier West) not looking to compete with Verizon, but rather to offer a service to areas which are never going to get it (otherwise.)” Board member Jim Valent raised the question about using the two rest areas along Route 86, one near Allegany and the other in Chautauqua County, to set up some sort of farmers market there. But County Legislator Crystal Abers pointed out that an existing state contract with a vendor (vending machines) prohibits the idea. “We’ve tried to get permission from the state a few times in the past, and they won’t (give it.)” Route 86, still a state highway, will not be considered a federal highway until it’s completed, from the Thruway downstate to Route 90 near Erie.

meaning of Community Action and acts according to the values outlined in the agency mission statement. Christina Ehlers, who’s also from Ellicottville, is the Nutrition Resource Coordinator. She runs the Nutrition Department. Nowak notes, “It’s a huge job because she coordinates the food pantries across the county.” Community Action assists fifteen food pantries and several soup kitchens, one located on the second floor of Community Action’s Salamanca headquarters. “This past year, we expanded operating hours (from four to five days a week) because there’s been a tremendous increase in need. We serve about 60 to 70 people a day in Salamanca.” Ehlers is the recipient of the Cindy Woods Memorial Service Award. This award recognizes a Community

Action employee who positively impacts the agency, staff, individuals and families through his or her day-to-day work. Jane Folts, the Homeless Services Manager, is being acknowledged for her leadership. The Leadership Award recognizes an individual who positively represents Community Action and takes a strong leadership role in addressing issues that impact Community Action customers. The Personal Achievement Award goes to Cheri Liddle, a single mom who relocated to this area after being the victim of a flood in Tennessee. This award recognizes a Community Action customer who has made significant progress toward self-effectiveness. And then there’s Maureen Curry, this year’s Volunteer of the Year. Olean residents know of her dedication to the Olean Public Library, where she served as director from 1969 to 1994. Currently, she’s director of the Olean Food

Pantry. Curry’s award honors a volunteer who devotes his or her time to serving others by volunteering at Community Action. Nowak says that each of the award recipients are people who have excelled working in their in their respective divisions. The awards come from volunteers in the agency, from peers, and from supervisors. “And we have testimonials from clients and families we have worked with.”

Sherman Wilkins will receive the Community Action Visions and Values award for his outstanding service to the Ellicottville community.

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.
