Judy and Pete Zeban celebrated their 23rd Wedding Anniversary at their timeshare in Orlando during the month of

September. CONGRATULATIONS to the Zebans! And, once again, “Paradise” is calling them …. They will be cruis-

ing the Caribbean this winter on Carnival cruiseship, Paradise. Bon Voyage! In other “Zeban news”, granddaughter,

Melissa is doing great! Her son, Liam, is almost 2 years old and is taking tap dance lessons with his own black tap

shoes, just like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly :-)! He loves the Dallas Cowboys, much to the delight of Judy, but Pete is

hoping to soon convert him to a New York Giants fan. We’ll keep you posted on that one!

Ventana Newsmakers Vivian Katwaroo, age 14, is offering babysitting, tutoring and pet-sitting services. Vivian has volunteered in her

church nursery for 2 years, graduated from Safe Sitter®, and is an exceptionally responsible big sister of 2 younger sib-

lings. Along with her abundant experience of caring for babies and younger children, as a homeschooling teen, Vivian

has a flexible schedule. For instance, Vivian is available in the afternoons to accompany children home from their bus

stop for after-school care and homework assistance or tutoring. Additionally, children are welcome to be cared for in her

I am a concerned resident in Ventana Village, very concerned about the speeding on Cypress Village

Boulevard. The fact that most of the traffic there is traveling at highway speeds, and where we exit Ven-

tana onto the Boulevard there is a blind curve to the left and to the right, which creates a very dangerous

situation. A year ago, a study was conducted on this issue by the County. Subsequently, the County in-

stalled new street signs on the Boulevard near the entrance of Ventana Drive to warn of approach of "hidden entry/

exit". The County deemed no further action was required at that time. I think the signs are totally ignored by most driv-

ers and have had no effect whatsoever on the speeding.

Although the Sheriff’s Office does write tickets to speeders on a regular basis, there is a way we can voice our commu-

nity concern fairly easily. The County has updated its website, making it easier to contact them for help. At

www.hillsboroughcounty.org, click on "At Your Service"; then click on "Other Request". Just fill in the simple form

there, describing the speeding traffic, the danger it poses to anyone leaving Ventana and requesting that the Sheriff's

Office write some speeding tickets on the Boulevard. If several Ventana residents file a request fairly often, hopefully,

our voices will be heard and a heightened police presence on the Boulevard will be made, making it safer for all of us.

Each year the Ruskin VFW members, dignitaries and color guards are joined by dozens of

youth, civic and community organizations. Various school marching bands,

Krewes, Honorary Mayors, Chambers of Commerce, Boy and Girl Scouts, as well as

local organizations and businesses make up this mile-and-a-half Parade.

Everyone is invited to a Cookout provided immediately following the Parade at

the Ruskin VFW (on US 41, a block north of 19th Avenue)!

Lots of fun is planned, including Awards to the best Parade floats ~

a Fun, Fun, Fun Day and Patriotic at the same time!

Neighborhood Watch Meeting

Neil Simon is one of America’s favorite playwrights whose hilarious comedy,

Plaza Suite, will be presented by Sun City Center’s Pelican Players on:

November 12th, 13th and 14th in the Veterans Theater in Kings Point

Plaza Suite first opened on Broadway in 1968. Set in the Plaza Hotel, the play is a

comedy in three acts. Each act takes place in Room 719, a lavish hotel suite that

overlooks Central Park and the newly built General Motors building. The first act

is about Sam and Karen Nash who are celebrating their 23rd (or 24th?) wedding an-

niversary. Act Two reunites Jesse and Muriel, two former high school sweethearts.

Jesse is now a famous Hollywood producer and Muriel is a married, mother of

three living in Tenafly, New Jersey. Act Three, arguably the most hilarious com-

edy/farce that Simon has written, is about Norma and Roy Hubley, whose daughter

is about to be married at the Plaza - if she decides to come out of the bathroom.

To say that each act gets funnier and funnier is an understatement. Neil Simon cre-

ates characters who serve up a delicious blend of riotous comedy with just a touch

of reality.

Pelican Players is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a sure-fire winner! ALL are welcome to attend. The talented cast

includes our own Fran Eckert (LaPaloma), Dan Tackitt, Sharon McKnight, Brenda Harris, Erik Hann, Kevin Steinke,

and Linda Halperin. Making their stage debuts are Greg Potvin, Robert Monheit and Andrea Combrink. Don’t miss it!

The evening performances start at 7pm. There is an additional matinee at 1:30pm on Saturday as well. Tickets

are $15 and may be purchased at the Veterans Theater Box Office in Kings Point, 1900 Clubhouse Drive. The

The Annual Festival of Trees is Back!

The Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library is gearing up to sponsor the 5th Annual Festival of Trees!

From Monday, November 16th, through Saturday, December 12th, the middle aisle of the Library will be transformed

into a beautiful season celebration with decorated holiday trees. The Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library are pre-

senting this fundraiser, with proceeds to help fund kids, teen and adult programs at the Library. Proceeds are raised via

silent auction bids for purchase of these donated decorated trees.

The holiday lights and displays are going up at the local stores. You are likely making your list and checking it twice.

Sad but true, the “bad guys” seem to come out in full force during the holiday season. Thefts and burglaries increase and

people always seem to be hurried, harried and distracted. Here are simple tips for safe holiday shopping:

>>> As purse snatchings are most common this time of year, try to go without a purse at all. Keep wallet contents in a

zipped or buttoned pocket. If you must carry a purse, use one that can be strapped tightly and worn on the front. Also, if

you can avoid carrying cash, do so. Instead, carry a debit card or checks. If you do carry checks, only bring enough for

the shopping you plan to do; leave the checkbook safe at home.

>>> Stay aware while leaving your car and returning. Thieves may follow you, looking for an opportunity to strike. If

possible, shop with a buddy. If you must shop alone, especially at night, and you feel uneasy about walking to your car,

request that a store employee escort you to your vehicle. (Beall’s Department Store has been offering this service for

years.)

>>> If at all possible, do not make multiple trips to the car with gifts/packages. Thieves will often follow a shopper out,

wait for them to go back into the store and then break into the car to steal the items. If you need to keep packages in the

car, cover them up. Some thieves will break into vehicles for the packages which are visible from outside the car. When

arriving back home, check your mirrors before exiting your vehicle, and look around as you are getting into your car to

get your bags out. Too often we can be distracted by the phone or just lost in our thoughts during this time of year ~

makes us easy marks for thieves.

So, follow these safety tips, be aware of your surroundings, and

have a safe and happy holiday season!

Beginning this past June, our Community Resource Deputy Jeff Merry, Hillsborough County Sher-

iff’s Office, has conducted very successful fraud awareness Forums on a different economic fraud topic

each month. These Forums identify new and growing economic frauds occurring here and include pre-

vention strategies and identification of resources available to victims. The Forums are open to the public

and are sponsored by various businesses who provide resource materials and refreshments.

The Forums for the month of November will cover Contractor Fraud The sessions run about an hour; all four listed

here cover the same issues.

The proper disposal of expired and unused prescription

drugs is important for many reasons! Consumption of ex-

pired prescriptions is dangerous because decomposition of in-

gredients takes place over time, possible inadvertent consumption

by mistaking them for another medication, and giving them to another indi-

vidual for consumption, which is illegal. And, lastly, improper disposal of

prescription drugs harms our precious environment.

Be Healthy, Stay Fit, It’s Your Choice!

The upcoming holiday season can be filled with a dizzying

array of demands, visitors, travel and frantic shopping trips.

For many people, it is also a time filled with sadness, self-

reflection, loneliness and anxiety. Compound the usual sea-

sonal pressures with economic strain and you may find this

to be one of the most emotionally trying times of the year.

But with some practical tips, you can minimize the stress

that accompanies the holidays. You may even end up en-

joying the holidays more than you thought you would.

Too often we take holiday stress for granted. What’s

worse, we often have higher expectations for this season

than for any other time of the year. Planning for the holi-

days can leave us feeling impatient, cranky, and in some

cases, depressed. When the realities of day-to-day life con-

flict with our efforts to make the holiday season perfect,

stress results.

The holidays don’t have to be perfect or just like last year.

Keep expectations for the holiday season manageable. Try

to set realistic goals for yourself. Pace yourself. Organize

your time. Make a list and prioritize the important activi-

ties. Make time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes

alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to han-

dle everything you need to do. Find something that reduces

stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and

restoring inner calm. Set aside specific days for shopping,

visiting friends and other activities. Learn to say no;

friends and colleagues will understand if you can’t partici-

pate in every project or activity.

SCHEDULING TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Simplify holiday commitments and traditions. Discuss

with your family which traditions are most important to

you and to them. It’s okay to re-evaluate past traditions.

Allow time for yourself. Remember to do things that you

enjoy. Avoid time crunches by making plans to visit some

friends and family soon after the holidays. Don’t over-

schedule yourself. Allow enough time to relax and recover

after visiting with others. Tell family members about your

commitments so you are not struggling against their expec-

tations. Travel after rush hour. When driving long dis-

tances, give yourself time to stop and rest.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR FEELINGS. If someone close

to you has recently died or you can’t be with loved ones,

realize that it’s normal to feel sadness and grief. It’s okay

to take time to cry or express your feelings. If you feel

lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other

social events. Spend time with people who care about you.

Reach out and make new friends, or connect with someone

you haven’t heard from in a while. Do something for

someone else. Volunteer your time to help others.

STICK TO A BUDGET. Before you go gift and food

shopping, decide how much money you can afford to

spend. Then stick to your budget. Don’t try to buy hap-

piness with an avalanche of gifts. Some alternatives: do-

nate to a charity in someone’s name, give homemade

gifts or start a family gift exchange.

DRINKING DURING THE HOLIDAYS. The holiday

season is usually a time of fun, frolics, and revelry, but a

few too many drinks can quickly turn the fun into a trip

to the ER. The idea of responsible drinking is often met

with a groan and a sigh because who wants to be a party

pooper – right? Unfortunately, many people underesti-

mate the effect alcohol can have on the mind and body

and especially those who are not used to prolonged drink-

ing in a short period of time. Too many people can get

out of control and the last thing you want is to wake up

with your head jammed between the toilet and the seat.

The smart thing to do when celebrating with friends away

from home is to appoint a designated driver. They will

make sure everyone gets home safe and sound and can

still enjoy all the festivities as a sober participant.

The holiday season, entertaining, shopping, year-end

crunch, and planning for the New Year can place heavy

demands on our minds and bodies. There is a simple ac-

ronym to help prevent the negative effects of stressful

times: H.A.L.T. Avoid getting too Hungry, too Angry,

too Lonely or too Tired (excuse me while I grab a bite

and vent to a friend, then take a nap!). Bottom line: take

care of yourself--physically, socially, spiritually and

emotionally. So, even though this is the time of year to go

-go-go, make sure you HALT to ensure you are at your

best. Commit to having a happy healthy peaceful holiday.

Give, receive, be grateful, take care of your body and

feed your soul throughout the holidays so you can enjoy

them the way they were meant to be enjoyed!

Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. In-

stead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that

can descent during the holidays. Learn to recognize your

holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal

demands, so you can combat them before they lead to a

meltdown. With a little planning and some positive think-

ing, you CAN find peace and joy during the holidays!
