LaPaloma Newsmakers

Kim & Karen Dutchess are thrilled to announce the birth of their first granddaughter! Megan Louise arrived this past

December (December 20th) to join big brother, Reid. Mom and Dad, Erika and Bobby Haught, are the proud parents.

Fond farewell to Floyd, Caroline & Michael Middleton! The family has moved, with four-legged Buster in tow, to

Denver, Colorado. Floyd received a job promotion and will now be closer to headquarters. The Middletons will be so

missed!

Resident, Ashley Hubbell, and her mother, Carol, owners of SugarBritches Cake Company, invite you to call on them

for your next gathering! Specializing in custom cake decorating, SugarBritches offers

cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cake balls and other yummy, fun desserts. The master bakers

can be reached at 645.2929.

New residents, Ron & Kim Meany, were married on Saturday, April 29th! To the new-

lyweds, CONGRATULATIONS!

Pete & Judy Zeban with granddaughter, Melissa, and great grandson, Liam

(pictured here) recently attended a College Fair at Palmetto High School as “Rutgers

Recruiters”! Not hard to imagine that at 2 months old, Liam, all decked out in his Rut-

gers tee-shirt, did his part in soliciting interest in Pete’s and Melissa’s alma mater!

Ventana Newsmakers Carrie Barnett, resident for 13 years, has moved to Brandon to be closer to family. Carrie will be sorely missed by her

neighbors!

Marge Yarger was recently recognized for her charitable work and awarded the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life

Membership Award at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center! Marge and husband, Dick, take a unique

interest in people and cultures and put that curiosity to use by traveling the world in a different way than most travelers

do ~ when “vacationing” in Africa, they lived in huts built by the Maasai tribes. CONGRATULATIONS and “thumbs

up” to Marge (& Dick)!

The 12th Annual Community Garage Sale

The Siberian Husky Rescue of Florida profited as well

at the Sale! Terry & Sharon Knight (LaPaloma) do-

nated their Sale profits ($230) to benefit a charity very

near and dear to their hearts, the Siberian Husky Res-

cue of Florida. Pictured here with Terry & Sharon is

their rescued Husky, Kona.

Word on the street has it that cruising traffic proved very

profitable for many! From household knickknacks and fur-

niture to exercise equipment and a golf cart to a lemonade

stand, money pockets were bulging ~ with fun community

spirit running rampant!

In Matters of Our Domain From the Property Manager’s Desk

Water Restrictions

New water restrictions, effective March 1st, state that:

Irrigation must be accomplished prior to 8am or after 6pm.

Any one zone of a property may only be watered once during the allowable day, NOT both in the morning and

evening.

Use of wading pools or other recreational devices shall be discharged or emptied onto a lawn or landscape area

requiring irrigation.

These rules apply to all sources of water including well water and surface water.

Visit the County website for more details: www.hillsboroughcounty.org/water

Design Review Committee

PLEASE NOTE: For planning purposes, Design Review Committee Applications are reviewed once a month ~ please

be aware that it may take up to 30 days to receive a response from the Committee.

Also, according to the Association declaration, trash receptacles should not be visible from the street or any privately

owned site.

Pets

The Association has been receiving complaints regarding pet owners not cleaning up after their pets. There has also been

an increase in complaints regarding residents allowing their dogs to disturb neighbors.

Every resident has a responsibility to clean up after their pet and to keep the pet on a leash. They should not allow the

dog to be a nuisance to their neighbors. This is not only stated in the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions of Cypress

Creek M.P.O.A., it is also a Hillsborough County Ordinance (00-26).

Failure to abide by these rules, can result not only in fines from the Association, but also the County. No one wants to

see fines brought against residents, or see any residents lose their pets, due to non-compliance. Please be a responsible

pet owner, and a good neighbor.

And just recently, it has come to the attention of the Landscape/Beautification Committee that individuals walking their

pets have been leaving the bags used to pick up after their pet, with pet droppings, along the Ventana wall on Cypress

Village Boulevard and also in the front yard of a vacant house on Ventana Drive. Please refrain from disposing of the

bags in this manner. It’s very inconsiderate of our residents.

If you have any questions regarding the above information, please contact us at 879.1139 or [email protected].

- Dave Krug/Larry Ferrell

Unique Property Services, Inc

Occasionally, outside solicitors are distributing fliers to our neighborhoods, and even knocking on doors. We do NOT allow solicitations in The Villages at Cypress Creek. If you happen to observe outsiders distributing fliers, please feel free to inform these

individuals that this is not allowed OR, if need be, please do not hesitate to call the Sheriff’s Office 247.8200 or 911. Thank you!

Reason to celebrate!

July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day

celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83).

In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies, then fighting in the revolutionary struggle, weighed a

resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in

favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document

drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th is celebrated as the birth of American inde-

pendence ~ Happy Birthday to us!

Happy Independence Day!

Start now to prepare your hurricane survival kit for you, your family and your pets, with food,

water, medicine and batteries. Be sure to secure important documents in waterproof bags or

containers.

Pre-register special needs of elderly residents that need assistance for a Special Needs Shelter.

Early registration allows emergency officials to quickly identify and check on those that need

medical attention. Special Needs applications are available by calling Hillsborough County's

Infoline at 272.5900 or the Hillsborough County Health Department 307.8015 x6006.

Make sure you are prepared to evacuate if the order is issued. The designated shelters in our

area are: Beth Shields Middle School, 15732 Beth Shields Way in Ruskin, (this location is

wheelchair-accessible with ADA-accessible restrooms) and is a County-staffed pet friendly

shelter ~ bring cage, food, water, medications and proof of vaccinations; and, Earl J. Lennard High School, 2342 Shell

Point Road East in Ruskin (this location is wheelchair-accessible with ADA-accessible restrooms).

Make sure you keep up with weather developments and official instructions as storms form so you have plenty of time

to secure your home, boat, pets and family.

The 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1st and ends on November 30th.

On May 23rd, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued their 2014 Atlantic hurri-

cane season outlook. NOAA is forecasting a slightly slower-than-average storm season, with 8 to 13 named storms,

including 3 to 6 hurricanes, with 1 or 2 of those being major ones.

The lukewarm outlook assumes El Niño will arrive by the heart of the season in mid-August. Also, sea surface tempera-

tures in the tropical Atlantic are expected to be about average. (El Niño is the large-scale weather pattern that suppresses

storm formation by producing strong vertical shear in the upper atmosphere.)

Yet, NOAA notes that even during otherwise slow seasons, the United States coastline still could be hit by a powerful

system. Robert Molleda, National Weather Service, notes that strong storms have hit Florida during El Niño years.

In 2004, when El Niño developed prior to the start of the season, Hurricanes Charley, Ivan, Frances and Jeanne hit.

“The real message is that any section of our coastline can be hit by a severe tropical storm, and a single storm can cause

tremendous havoc,” says Kathryn Sullivan, NOAA Administrator. Be prepared!

Here are some reminders on ways to keep your family, pets and belongings safe:

Detailed hurricane preparedness information can be found in the

Hillsborough County 2014 Hurricane Guide available at post offices,

Did you know?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain's nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in

loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.

These neurons, which produce the brain chemical, or neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, break connections with other nerve

cells and ultimately die. For example, short-term memory fails when Alzheimer's disease first destroys nerve cells in the

hippocampus, and language skills and judgment decline when neurons die in the cerebral cortex.

Two types of abnormal lesions clog the brains of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease: Beta-amyloid plaques (sticky

clumps of fibers composed largely of the protein tau) that build up inside nerve cells. Although these structures are hall-

marks of the disease, scientists are unclear whether they cause it or are a byproduct of it.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, or loss of intellectual function, among people aged 65 and

older.

Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.

The origin of the term, Alzheimer’s disease, dates back to 1906 when Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German physician, pre-

sented a case history before a medical meeting of a 51-year-old woman who suffered from a rare brain disorder. A brain

autopsy identified the plaques and tangles that today characterize Alzheimer’s disease.

“We all have a reason to end Alzheimer’s”

AAA Travel Group

With a new (returning) Head Coach, new General Manager, loads of key acquisitions during Free Agency, the

just completed NFL Draft of some great new talent, and even upgrades at Raymond James Stadium, the Tampa

Bay Buccaneers are primed to have an outstanding 2014 season.

I wanted to make you all aware of a really great ‘deal’ if any of you, or people you may know, are interested in

purchasing single-game tickets for this coming Bucs’ season. When AAA Members buy single-game Bucs

tickets at their local AAA office they save $5 - $9 per ticket off of the price they’d pay at the gate… AND there’s

no Ticketmaster fee; they’re also a lot less expensive than buying tickets from StubHub, NFL Ticket Exchange, or

any other online brokers. Stop into our office for a (color-coded) flyer showing available locations and ticket

prices for all of this season’s home games.

On a ‘semi-related’ note – During hockey season AAA has a very similar deal for Tampa Bay Lightning tickets

when AAA Members purchase single game tickets at their local office – and we’re working hard to get a simi-

lar program for the Tampa Bay Rays.

…. has moved!

Still located in The Home Depot/Bealls plaza, the new shop is bigger and better!

Owner, Sherri Huffman, bought Cypress Vac and Sew 13 years ago, and operated it mostly as a place that sold and

repaired sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. Soon thereafter she saw a need for a larger operation, a place where

classes could be held, fabric sold and handmade items made and sold on consignment to the public. Thus, the new digs!

She can fix just about any sewing machine or vacuum clearn make or model as long as the parts are still available. Sherri

is especially proud that her new store is big enough to not only allow for instructional classes but also to display the rows

and rows of fabric she sells, along with many items made by hand, from purses to pillows ~ she has accomplished her

goal!

Cypress Vac and Sew offers embroidery classes at 1pm on Thursdays and quilting classes begin at 10am on Mondays.

There is a children’s sewing class on Saturday mornings and a beginner’s adult sewing class is also planned. To find out

Sequoia Financial Group, LLC (Sequoia) recently opened an office here in The Villages at Cypress Creek.

Since the founding of the award-winning firm 20 years ago, Sequoia Financial Group has focused on planning, passion

and fanatical client service. Sequoia strongly believes that financial planning should revolve solely around you. Ouir mis-

sion is to help you get what you want out of life. And we’re passionate about it. As a premier independent financial advisor,

our salaried, non-commission professionals have access to a variety of investment solutions and resources. That means our

recommendations are based solely on what works best for you, not us. When working with Sequoia, you are always in con-

trol.

As our client, we know you will come with your own set of unique needs. Your time is a precious commodity. You want

advisors who monitor your plan and communicate often to help you maximize your results as your assets continue to grow.

Retirees want a time-tested and proven asset allocation strategy, access to non-proprietary products, and to know that you

can trust your advisor to help keep your portfolio on track. Business owners need a professional advisor who is instinctive

about balancing the business’ growth (e.g., capital needs) with your individual wealth. Financial independence, business

succession and security for future generations are paramount as well.

Whether you’re just starting out, passing down your business or retiring in search of new adventures, we stay with you

every single step of the way.

Our advisors bring clients the experience of large national firms but sincerely believe that superb client service is what

The Honorary Mayor’s Race of Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce is a

win/win/win for all involved! The candidate(s) choose a designated 501c3

charity to which one half of the monies the candidate raises are donated, with

the other half donated to the SCC Chamber.

Samaritan Mission as her charity of choice and “throws her hat into the

ring” for the Mayor’s Race in late June! The fundraising takes place be-

tween July 4th and August 15th only, with the last efforts finished up at the

August Chamber luncheon on August 21st. The candidate with the MOST

monies raised is the winner as “Honorary Mayor.” But ALL the designated

charities, as well as the Chamber of Commerce, are winners too! Donations for

“Mayor Rosie” accepted at JSA Medical Group after July 4th.

Be Healthy, Stay Fit, It’s Your Choice!

Summertime = Sun and Fun!

Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat

stroke, can be problems for people enjoying outdoor ac-

tivities in the hot summer months. A heat-related illness

occurs when the body is not able to regulate (control) its

temperature. If left untreated, a heat illness can lead to

serious complications, even death. If detected and treated

early, however, most serious problems stemming from

heat-related illnesses can be avoided.

The body and temperature

The body’s main center for heat regulation is the hypo-

thalamus, a part of the brain that secretes substances that

control metabolism (the chemical processes occurring in

the body). Normal body temperature is balanced through

heat production and heat loss. As a person is exposed to

high heat and humidity, the body temperature rises.

Most of the body’s methods for heat loss depend on the

environmental, or outside, temperature being lower than

the body’s temperature. When the outside temperature is

high, the main source of heat loss is evaporation, when

perspiration on the skin changes from liquid to vapor. If

humidity if high, however, sweat cannot evaporate easily.

Heat cramps

What are heat cramps?

Heat cramps are muscle pains or spasms that may occur

with strenuous activity. They usually affect the muscles of

the abdomen, arms or legs. Heat cramps usually affect

people who sweat a lot during strenuous activity. They

also may be a symptom of heat exhaustion (see below).

How are heat cramps treated?

Stop any activity and rest in a cool place.

Drink plenty of fluids (re-hydrate). Consider

sports drinks.

Be sure to stretch before activity.

Seek medical attention if:

The cramps continue for more than one hour or recur with

activity

Heat exhaustion

What is heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is a heat-related illness that can develop

after spending a long time in high temperatures and not

drinking enough fluids. Elderly people, people with high

blood pressure, and people working or exercising in a hot

environment are most at risk for heat exhaustion.

The SUN IS OUT and YOU SHOULD BE TOO!

Here’s how to be smart about it all!

What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

Symptoms, or warning signs, of heat exhaustion include:

Muscle cramps

Heavy sweating

Weakness

Headache

Dizziness

Nausea or vomiting

Pale skin color

Fainting

In addition, the person’s skin may be cool and moist. His

or her pulse may be quick and weak, and breathing may be

quick and shallow. If untreated, heat exhaustion may pro-

gress to heat stroke.

How is heat exhaustion treated?

It is important for the person with symptoms to cool off.

Try the following cooling measures:

Stop any activity and take the person to a cool

place, such as a shaded area or air-conditioned

room.

Have the person rest with his or her legs elevated.

Apply cool towels to the person’s skin.

Give the person a drink of a cool, non-alcoholic

beverage.

If participating in sports, take off any extra equip-

ment and helmets.

Seek immediate medical attention if:

The symptoms are severe

The person has heart problems or high blood pressure

Heat stroke

What is heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a more severe heat-related illness. It results

from the total failure of the body’s heat regulation system.

This occurs when the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the

sweating system fails and the body cannot cool down.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. It can cause perma-

nent disability or even death. Call 911 immediately! And

in the meantime, do whatever you can do to cool the per-

son down: get into shade/air conditioning, ice bath, apply

towels drenched in ice water, and give the person some-

thing cool and non-alcoholic to drink.

Be Smart! Be Cool and Stay Cool!
