The end of Term 3 in any school is always a time of culmination and reflection as we celebrate and farewell the Year 12 cohort; 2018 was no different.
At Penrith Anglican College our mission is to educate students to become informed and responsible global citizens who follow Christ and serve others.
As a College we have seen a desire to serve others grow and develop within the Year 12 graduating class of 2018 throughout the years. They have willingly supported our service and mission trips over many years to Fiji, Cambodia and Nepal. They have made a difference in the town of Cootamundra as part of the annual Dusty Boots service trip and they have completed service projects as part of the annual CEP program, Duke of Edinburgh and the College Tabitha program. They have developed great compassion and empathy for others which has driven them to action on many occasions.
Such passion was evident at the Year 12 Graduation Chapel on Thursday when they presented the College with a gift of $3,500 to give on their behalf to a drought relief project. The project was initiated by a Year 12 student from a farming family at Macquarie Anglican Grammar School in Dubbo.
This gift will support the local farming community in Dubbo for the purchase of stock feed and the provision of support structures for children, such as lunch orders and school based student support programs.
Congratulations Year 12 for such a commitment to the service of others. It is a fitting tribute for your year group and a gift that will benefit others far beyond the gates of Penrith Anglican College.
On behalf of the College, Congratulations Year 12 2018. We wish you every success in your final exams and in the years ahead.

Holiday time – an opportunity to stop, slow down & reflect.
I am always surprised at how much can be organised to fit into one term, or one month, one week or even one day. We work hard at completing as much as we can within a set timeframe. This is great within an environment such as a school community. With so many members, we are keen to provide many events and opportunities for the wide range of students in our College. Students can embrace the chance to learn new things such as lego robotics, rise to the challenge of learning a dance to perform on stage to the student body and participate in weekly sport competitions with their peers. The number of events held this term, a mere ten weeks, has been massive.
So, at the end of a school term, and the start of a holiday break, understandably we often are in need of rest. It is healthy to acknowledge this and embrace the chance to stop, slow down and reflect. In the bible we read in Genesis that God on the seventh day stopped, rested and had the opportunity to reflect on his work. Indeed, throughout the account of creation in Genesis 1, God reflected on his work and it says was good seven times, and in fact on the sixth day he saw all his creation and that it was very good.
Martin Seligman’s work, the founder of Positive Psychology, builds on five aspects of the way people can build on their own wellbeing. The fifth aspect is Accomplishment. Reaching goals we set for ourselves, whatever the type of goal, should be reflected upon and celebrated. Times of rest are ideal opportunities for us to reflect on our achievements and to celebrate them. It is not often we savour our successes. We can help our students to celebrate their own achievements with a healthy perspective.
It is important that their goals are their own, that they do not compare themselves with others and their goals are meaningful to them. Some of the students I work with can dwell on their perceived failures or things that they have not been able to do. We need to help them to see what they have done and be proud of it. We need to be able to savour accomplishments and enjoy the satisfaction they can bring before stepping up to our next goal and challenge.
I encourage you these holidays to help your child/ren to recognise things they have achieved this term, to savour the joy that their efforts had brought and rest with the knowledge that Term 4 will be full of more opportunities, hurdles to jump over and challenges to help each student to grow.

HSC ExamsCongratulations to our Year 12 Music and Drama classes for successfully presenting their PERFORMANCE exams in the last few weeks. These represent a significant percentage of the HSC exam mark for these subjects. Although these occasions can be a little nerve-wracking for students (and teachers!), the students were thoroughly prepared and were able to perform very well.
Our students were:DRAMA – Abbey McPherson, Chloe Pemberton, Tara Steward and Isabella WakemanMUSIC - Jared Bartlett, Hayden Goodshaw, Abbey Mcpherson, Isabella Mitchell, Rachelle Puaty, Sophie Smith, and Joel Walker
Congratulations especially to Abbey McPherson who has been nominated for the NESA Drama AND Music showcases for outstanding HSC exam performances! We wish her all the best as her video submissions are considered for final inclusion in the OnSTAGE and ENCORE programs!
In related news, Miss Tucker and Mr Clark have recently returned from HSC performance marking for NESA in Drama and Music respectively. This was an extremely valuable and interesting experience; one that allowed them to see some fantastic student work and to gain in-depth insight into the marking process and standards.
Development/Intermediate Band PPP eventOn Friday 31 August, our young musicians had a “PPP” – practice, pizza, performance. This was an extended rehearsal (including sectionals), a delicious pizza dinner, and a performance for family and friends of the band members. It was an entertaining and short concert which included such hits as “Gonna Fly Now” (from “Rocky), Spiderman Theme, and Rock Around the Clock. It also included some lovely solo items from Maddison Tucker (Y4), Reuben Kemp-Burrows (Y5), Hannah Kemp-Burrows (Y8), Lachlan Azzopardi (Y7), Elissa Ferguson (Y6) and Esther Woodruff (Y6). Thanks to Mr Neil Potter for conducting, and congratulations to the band for a lovely performance!

I’m doing both Chemistry and Physics, so I had to do two depth studies. My depth studies were different to the others in my class as I opted out of doing an experiment; I instead did a research task.
Although this may sound unappealing, it was an enjoyable experience as I got to research into topics I haven’t studied before and I learnt new skills regarding online research. My depth studies were on topics I couldn’t do at school; school doesn’t have access to radioactive materials and particle accelerators and detectors.
My chemistry depth study was about Beta decay which is a type of radioactive decay. This involved me doing research on Beta decay and everything it relates to. The great thing about Depth Studies is that they let you explore aspects of science that you knew very little about.
Jack CornwellYear 11 Student
I started with researching about beta minus decay, a topic we learn about in year 9 science and I ended up researching about elementary particles and quantum fluctuations. This wasn’t the end either, I found myself getting distracted a little too often as I ventured down the rabbit hole. Finding out about these new topics was a good experience as it allowed me to broaden my knowledge, but it still allowed me to apply it to a school context. The whole task got me thinking with a more scientific mindset and made me question what I was reading more critically.
My physics depth study was about the doppler effect and how it affects light. My chemistry depth study started broad and I got to choose where I went specific, but with my physics depth study I decided to start with a few more limits. I found this made the whole experience easier as it gave me a bit more structure. With my physics depth study, I got to learn about stars, galaxies, the doppler effect and the electromagnetic spectrum. As I was more restricted I didn’t venture off the path as often, but I still addressed and learnt much more than I was expecting at the beginning of this experience.
Overall, the depth study is a great task. It allows students to explore; with the only limits being time and themselves. If you’re like me and always asking, why? Then this task will be a blessing in disguise, it’s difficult but it is very much worth it.

On Friday 21 September, eight students from Years 9, 10 and 11 attended an overnight hike in the Glenbrook area of the Blue Mountains National Park.
For most students it was their first time packing and hiking with all their equipment into the National Park and for a few it was their first experience camping in a tent.
The highlight of the camping trip were the night games ‘Capture the Flag’ and ‘Sardines’.
Students found the 12km hike across a variety of tracked terrain demanding, but very rewarding. A trackless navigation activity on day two provided an added challenge as students followed a compass bearing through dense vegetation to reach the next checkpoint.
Thank you to Mr Tan and Mr Commerford for joining the students on their camping adventure.

Flowers for Nepal
I would like to thank everyone who supported my fundraiser for Nepal. Thank you to Mrs Alyce Coleman and my mum, Mrs Maxine Nielsen, for everything they did to support me for this important cause so we can help educate children much less fortunate than us.
The stall was a great success raising over $1000.00 for the school in Nepal, thanks to the generosity of our College staff and wider community. It was an outstanding success!
Mark NielsenYear 9 Student
Thank you to all our staff and parents who volunteered their time to make it such a great day. Particular shout out to those teachers who braved being dunked including Mrs Grima. Special thanks to all the stall holders and vendors and to our major sponsor Penrith Toyota and to Direct Accounting for sponsoring the fireworks which ended the day in spectacular fashion. Finally a huge thank you to our P&F who did an amazing job organising the day.

NRL Honour
William (Billy) Bradford of Year 3 had the honour of walking out and delivering the Official Steeden Match ball on Saturday night, 21 September, between the Roosters and the Rabbitohs. Billy was lucky enough to be on TV as well!
This preliminary final had significance as it was the final game to be played at Allianz Stadium/ SFS before it is knocked down for a complete re-build and it also set a new ground attendance of 44,380.
School Sport Australia Diving Championships
Well done to Gabriel Rodriguez of Year 4 who came first in the 1m Springboard and 3rd in the Knockout events at the School Sport Australia Diving Championships.
Gabriel has done an extensive amount of training and even learnt new dives for this competition. For Gabriel to attain this awards this is amazing, considering that he has only been diving for a little over 8 months. Congratulations Gabriel and we look forward to seeing your future endeavours.

Effo Didier Komlan Aklikokou
Effo is 10 years old and lives in Togo with his parents. There are 3 children in the family. His father and mother only occasionally work. At home, Effo’s duties are to carry water and running errands
Effo loves to play soccer and go to Sunday School. His favourite subject is History.
Effo has been sponsored by the current Year 5 since they were in Kindergarten.
Perhaps when you were younger you dreamt of being a doctor, a pilot, a teacher, a journalist, a lawyer, a businessman, radio host, movie star. When we sponsor the children we are helping create opportunities for them to dream about their future too.
