You are very welcome to attend these 50th celebrations

Hadrian has now been educating children for fifty years on the same site and has previous been known as both Hadrian Primary School and Hadrian Lower School.

All past pupils, parents, staff and friends are invited to join the school on Friday 18th September to celebrate and share memories.

Hadrian Academy in Dunstable is known for its high standards in English, Maths and Science with a particular focus on the arts and sport. There are lots of groups running for able, gifted and talented children across the school.

Hadrian is the only school in Bedfordshire with a Platinum Sing Up Award and all children sing every day. There is an ad hoc adult choir for staff, governors and parents and the children’s choir is especially stunning. At the last count ninety five children from KS2 chose to be in the choir, committing themselves to weekly lunchtime rehearsals and a wide variety of musical styles.

They recently won School’s Got Talent in London and were picked to sing at the Mayor’s Civic Service. This is in addition to their work in the community, singing at the

Luton and Dunstable Hospital Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Dunstable Sparkle Event, the Co-Op opening and many other local places. They were also very excited to pass the audition to sing on the stage at Disneyland Paris and had a brilliant time in Paris, lapping up the applause and compliments. They hope to do this again in the future.

Hadrian also has a drama focus with a dedicated LAMDA teacher. This has built up over the years- the first few exam pupils went to Northampton to be examined about ten years ago and now Hadrian has its own centre for exams each year and over forty applicants. Students almost always pass with merit or distinction and this has a positive influence on all other school productions, assemblies and classwork. We believe LAMDA exams enhance children’s self-confidence to engage and contribute fully, in other words, to fulfil their potential. They help to develop a love of literature, poetry and drama and thus improve standards of communication through the spoken word.

Ultimately, it is the sense of achievement that floods Hadrian which empowers the individual children to shine.

Visitor Centre, Moneybury Hill, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. HP4 1LT

EASTER IS ON ITS WAY! - Cadbury is once again supporting the National Trust to host this year’s Easter Egg Trails at Ashridge, with 6,000 chocolate prizes to be won from 3rd April – 6th April. Families are invited to unleash their inner ex-plorer on a trail of discovery in the beautiful spring woodland at Ashridge to win their Cadbury chocolaty treat. This year’s theme is Discovery and children can discover more about the wild animals that live on the Ashridge Estate. Visitors can also climb the Bridgewater Monument and browse in the National Trust shop, enjoy a delicious hot lunch at the outdoor café and pick up ideas for other adventures later in the year. A great day out for all the family, whatever the weather.New General Manager, Susie Mercer, said “This will be my first Easter at Ashridge. I’m really excited about it as the Estate is so popular at this time of year. I’m just hoping that the kids leave a couple of eggs for us older explorers once the weekend is over!”The Cadbury Easter Egg Trails take place at Ashridge from 3rd April - 6th April 10am – 4pm. £3 per child.

BLUEBELL TIME! - The bluebells on the Ashridge Estate are native English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta). Every year in late April or early May a spectacular carpet of blue emerges beneath the trees in areas of Ashridge. Bluebells are perfectly adapted to thrive in the shade and extra moisture provided by the cover of the trees coming into leaf. The first shoots appear in January, giving the bluebells a head start over other woodland plants before the canopy shades out the woodland floor. Long tapering leaves rise from the bulb and are topped with clusters of delicate bell-shaped flowers, which provide an early source of food for insects. Maps and self-guided walks are available in the Ashridge Visitor Centre and we will be running drop in bluebell walks when they are in bloom at 1pm and 3pm. (Dates to be confirmed)Please remember we all have a responsibility to protect our native bluebells and to make sure the beautiful woodland scenes here at Ashridge can be experienced by future generations. Please help us protect Ashridge’s bluebells by keeping to paths to prevent trampling and by not picking them.

GENTLE STROLLTues 14th April 2.30pm - 4.30pm Covering Sallow Copse and surrounding areas. Part of a series of strolls which provide a chance to dis-cover the wildlife in different parts of the Estate. The stroll takes around 2 hours. Make your house a home with blinds and awnings from

Celebrating 30 Years1985 – 2015 It all began in 1985 when Mel Grundy bought a blind cleaning machine and off he went, towing a trailer, to offices in London to clean their old and tired looking blinds. When he had finished they looked as good as new and from then on gained many happy customers. Then he started getting enquiries about the supply of new blinds for these offices he said ”yes of course I can” and so the next chapter began.17 years ago Mel decided to retire and that is when we, Mark & Sarah, took up the reins. We are pleased to say that 30 years on we still supply and fit new blinds, not just commercial work but to homes, schools, restaurants, pubs, doctors surgeries and many other organisations. The structure of the business may have changed over the years from phone messages to email, websites and social media but reliability, friendliness and value for money is still the first priority for this family business.

We are proud to say that over 80% of our work comes from recommendations from delighted cus-tomers who come back to us time and time again. There is always something new to look at and the colours, designs and styles have got better and better over the years. So when your conservatory is too hot, you can’t see your computer screen or your children needs blackout blinds to stop them waking up at the crack of dawn then we have something for you and would love to hear from you.A window blind does not just have to be a necessity it can also be an accessory providing a whole new look to any room.We would like to thank all of our customers for 30 years of loyalty and continued support and we look forward to providing you with our excellent service, advice and friendliness for many more.

A5-M1 Link and Woodside Link

These are renaissance times for Dunstable. Inward investment from Prologis, Marks & Spencer and others means thousands of newjobs for our up-and-coming town and the surrounding area. Future plans to fade out the familiar sight of HGVs thundering down High Street are good news for existing traders as a rejuvenated centre becomes an attractive place to stop and shop.

Making these advancements possible are two major pieces of road infrastructure from the Highways Agency and Central Bedfordshire Council, namely the A5-M1 Link and the proposed Woodside Link – which both represent a piece in Dunstable's regenera-tion jigsaw; indeed it is estimated that the value of investment released by the highways infrastructure will be £2.5 billion for Dunstable, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard.Taking an easterly route through the 'wedge' between Sandringham Drive (in Houghton Regis) and Wheat-field Road (in Luton) before heading up to the M1, the Woodside Link is planned to connect the industrial ar-eas of Dunstable and Houghton Regis to a new junc-tion 11a. In around three minutes, vehicles will drive from the Porz Avenue / Poynters Road / Park Road North roundabout to the motorway or vice versa. "Two advantages instantly come into play," says Marcel Coiffait, Director of Community Services, Central Bedfordshire Council. "Firstly, businesses have a gateway to the heart of the country's motorway infrastructure, and potentially to Prologis's proposed rail freight interchange at Sundon. This will stimulate further inward investment providing job opportunities for residents throughout the area. Prologis has also chosen Dunstable for its 310,000 sq ft distribution/de-velopment facility and up to 358,068 sq ft neighbour-ing development soon to be built - a fantastic result.""Secondly, those living and working in Dunstable and Houghton Regis will experience reduced road congestion as around 18,000 vehicles per day opt to take the Woodside Link instead of filling up the town centres with traffic."

That's not the full story as the 1.8-mile Woodside Link is intended to provide access to a new develop-ment area north of Houghton Regis, where up to 5,150 new homes are to be built and 30 hectares of employment land developed by 2031. "More homes means more people spending money in the two towns, and this will attract more big name retailers," Marcel adds. "M&S Simply Food and Next have already confirmed they are coming to Dunstable's White Lion Retail Park when it is refurbished later this year - Next actually expanding to a store five times the size in the process creating approximately 30 new jobs. Let's see who's going to join them."Proposed to open to the public in autumn 2016, the Woodside Link is part of the wider regeneration of the area, which includes the construction of the Highways Agency’s A5-M1 Link (North Dunstable Bypass), a dual carriageway connecting the M1 at the new junction 11a north of Luton, to the A5 at Thorn Turn north of Dunstable."The 2.9-mile A5-M1 Link opening early 2017 is an important piece of the jigsaw, reducing and stabilising journey times: Leighton Buzzard to the M1 reduces to just 10 minutes from 50 minutes," concludes Marcel. "This new route to the M1 allows us to detrunk the A5, taking heavy goods vehicles away from Dunstable and Houghton Regis town centres, further reducing congestion and improving air quality. Dunstable will literally have the space to thrive, as some of the railings and street furniture will be removed giving the town centre a much more positive look and feel."

In 2010 our family opened The White Lion and ever since we have been working our little socks off!

Between the six of us we are the Head Chefs, the design and marketing depart-ment, the waitresses, the cleaners, head office and everything in between!!We have met some fantastic people along the way, been supported by some brilliant staff and made some great friends. We are proud to be a successful business in Dunstable and we really do put our heart and soul into making the White Lion a place that people enjoy coming to.Every weekend people now come to us to celebrate; Birthdays, Anniversaries, Retire-ments and even Weddings, we know these are important events and we are thrilled that people want to spend their special occa-sions at our place. We take a lot of pride in the training we offer our staff at all levels and were really happy for two of our Apprentices that won awards locally this year.We have even won Best Hospitality Busi-ness in Dunstable in 2013 & 2014!Now we need your help to win another award...

Emily

We have been delighted to be at The Bell in Studham for over 10 years now and in that time welcomed and enjoyed many a splendid occasion. It is always nice to share these days with our regulars but equally give a warm welcome to new faces and families, and of course also their four legged friends. When we heard we had been nominated for ‘Best Pub’ in the Bedfordshire Food & Drink Awards 2015, we were so pleased not only for us but for the hard work and commit-ment our team give and the pride that our loyal customers offer us. The Bell really is a true gem in some of Bedfordshire’s finest countryside and a perfect haven to retreat to whether it’s to enjoy a Sunday lunch, challenge yourself at our weekly quiz, get involved in the open mic nights, or simply to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy good food, good wine with good music and great company! So next time you are looking for a good old fashioned traditional pub, look no further than the 500 year old Bell, whether it’s for a cosy night for two or to celebrate with a par-ty for that special occasion, being tempted with the many gifts we have dotted around or simply relaxing in the large gardens, per-fect in the summer, The Bell and all it has to offer will look forward to welcoming you very soon! The Martin Lewis Money PageMartin LEWIS Tackle your bills

Winter is coming. Don’t wait until you’re knee-deep in the white stuff to sort your bills. Here, prevention truly beats cure – tackling your bills now means you can take the financial bite out of winter chills…

Free loft insulation and even boilers (for some). While the loft insulation free-for-all's ended, some will still be entitled to some serious free energy-saving measures. Most of the big six energy firms offer free boilers, typically worth £2,000, and free insulation, usually worth about £300. Crucially, you don't need to be with the energy provider to get it, but you do generally need an income under £16,000, and to be on income-related benefits or pension credit. I can’t definitely say you’ll qualify, but it is worth checking. Alternatively, the well-meaning but stuttering Green Deal initiative is designed to let you pay for things like underfloor heating, double glazing and solid wall insulation, from the 'savings' you make on energy bills. Deciding whether it’s right for you is complex, so for full help read www.moneysavingexpert.com/greendeal

Save £100s and beat the hikes. Rather surprisingly, fixing energy, where you lock in a set rate, is now cheaper than a normal switch. Five of the big six energy providers have now announced hikes, and their best new prices are costlier than the cheapest fixed tariffs. So right now you can get the very cheapest deals available, and it comes with no-hike certainty. The only exception to this is a variable (ie, subject to hikes) tariff from minnow Spark Energy – though it hasn't hiked (yet?), needs paying upfront, and feedback ain't great, so I’m ignoring it.

The cheapest fix comes from E.on for a year, but slightly longer and only a touch more are deals from EDF or Npower. Crucially, these two have no exit penalties. So on the off-chance the Prime Minister delivers the price cuts he’s promised, and the even more unlikely event that they’ll be so substantial that other tariffs elsewhere are cheaper, you'll be free to leave.

However, always do the numbers for your own circumstances. To check if you can save (you may be on an older, cheaper deal), and who your winner is, you can use my Cheap Energy Club top fixes comparison at www.cheapenergyclub.com, or do a standard

comparison on any Ofgem-approved comparison site – just search for The Confidence Code at www.ofgem.gov.uk to see the full list. If you're not online, use a comparison with a phone service, such as Energyhelpline on 0800 074 0745, or uSwitch on 0800 051 5493.

Paying energy bills by monthly direct debit’s up to 6% cheaper. If you can, do, as it’ll usually mean discounted bills of up to 6% less, so contact your provider to check. Though always do regular meter readings for accuracy, as your bill is estimated. If it’s too high, you have a right to ask for it to be lowered.

Got electricity only? You can still save. With electricity only, you can still get a cheap fix to save - just follow the info above. For those on Economy 7, assessing is trickier. It’s only really a boon for those who use at least 40% of their energy at night. If not – don’t bother. Full help to decide at www.mse.me/eco7

Can you find your stopcock? No sniggering - winter frozen pipe bursts can create an average £7,000 of damage, often worsened as many scrabble round searching for their stopcock - the mains water off switch - for ages as their home floods.

Take the time to find it now – mine is under the kitchen sink. Others find theirs in the bathroom or inside a cupboard. If yours isn’t working, you may want to call a plumber now, before it’s a problem.

Choosing between heating and eating? If you're seriously behind, or in general financial hardship - as far too many are after the hikes - you may be eligible for special help. Call the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99 to check. Plus if anyone in your home was born on or before 5 January 1952, you're due up to £300 in tax-free winter fuel payments. Payments should be made automatically, but if you’ve never had it before then you may need to register - see www.gov.uk.

Plus anyone on specific income support, jobseekers' allowances or pension credit gets £25 in cold weather payments for every 7 days it's sub-0 C.

For those with existing debts there are record deals available right now to let you cut the cost

and save £100s or £1,000s.

DEBT

Yet as the old adage goes, banks are companies that’d lend you an umbrella when the sun shines and ask for it back when it rains. So getting cheaper credit when in debt is tricky – however I have developed credit card eligibility check-ers which can help you check what debt cutting cards you’re able to get before you apply. If you can lower the interest cost, then more of your repayment clears the actual debt, not just services the interest – meaniing you’ll be debt-free far quicker. So here are the key debt cost cutting need to knows…

I make no apology for saying…. stop borrow-ing. If you're struggling, borrowing to make ends meet just elongates the problem - making it even costlier and more difficult. The tips below will help, but if you keep adding to the debt nothing will fix it. So take a deep breath, do a budget and examine all your spending to see if you can cut back.

Best buys are only best if you can get them. While there are many great rates on offer, you need to pass a credit score to get them, and many fail at that hurdle. Worse still when you apply it leaves a footprint on your file and lots of those in a short space of time can hit your future credit worthi-ness. I've given evidence to Parliament on this 'anti-shopping around' system - little's been done. So to fight back on my site we’ve built a free eligibility calculator – which tells you which cards you’re most likely to be accepted for. Just as importantly it does this without leaving a footprint on your file that lenders can see – so you can home in on the right one, minimising applica-tions. To try it go to www.MoneySavingExpert.com/eligibility.

Shift credit or store card debt to 35mth 0%. A bal-ance transfer’s where you get a new credit card that repays debts on the old credit or store card(s) for you, so you owe it instead at a lower rate. The longest 0% deals for those new to the card company now last nearly three years (a year ago they were 30 months), but as with many things in life longest isn't always best. Aim for the lowest fee card, ensuring you've enough time to clear it. Top picks and golden rules at www.mse.me/balancetransfers.

Shift your overdraft to 0% too. Debit cards can be debt cards too - if you're in your overdraft it's often more costly than credit cards, especially if you bust your limit. So there are two ways to get out of this. a) Switch to a 0% overdraft: Top bank for custom-er service www.firstdirect.com offers a £250 0% overdraft (you must pay-in £1,000/month) and for accepted new switchers a free £100 - which should help reduce the overdraft straight away. For some www.nationwide.co.uk 0% overdraft may be bigger, but it's only for a year and is 50p/day after. b) Shift it to a 0% 'money transfer' credit card. A few balance transfer cards also let newbies 'money transfer'. This is where it pays a lump sum into your bank account, which can then clear your overdraft so you owe it instead. Top pick is www.mbna.co.uk which gives 24 months 0% money transfers for a one off 2.2% fee (though it's 22.9% rep APR after the 0% ends). Yet be careful, follow the balance transfer rules above and for more picks and full step-by-step help see www.mse.me/moneytransfers.

Can you cut the cost of existing loans? It’s complex, as you need to factor in that most loans charge up to two months’ interest to repay them early. • Who should try? Those who can get a substantially lower APR loan (eg, more than a fifth off, so from 10% to 8%), and have a while left to repay. Full options in www.mse.me/cheaploans. • How much can I save? Someone who is 2 years through a 5 year 12% loan for £5,000, paying it off with a 4.9% loan, could save around £1,000.

Don’t pay all debts equally - attack the highest APR. Once your debts are as cheap as possible, list them all, includ-ing overdrafts, in order of APRs. Focus all spare cash to clear the highest APR one as it grows fastest, and just pay the min on the others. Once that’s clear, move to the next highest.

I’ve never seen a debt crisis that isn’t solv-able - don’t give up hope. The solutions above are for cutting debt costs. Yet for some, it’s much worse than that. Do any of these apply to you... • You can’t meet even just the minimum monthly payments. • You have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year’s salary. • You have sleepless nights or serious depression/anxiety over your debts.

If so then you’re likely in a debt crisis and that means the solution you need is totally different. The most important thing I can tell you is I’ve never seen a debt crisis that isn’t solvable. It may not always be quick or easy, but there is a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. The first step is to go for free, one-on-one debt counselling help from www.adviceguide.org.uk, www.stepchange.org, www.nationaldebtline.org or, if you’re struggling emotionally too www.capuk.org.

Ok, so spring is officially here and we break out the DIY and home improvements in gusto!!! However we are all guilty of rushing off to the nearest showroom when it comes to planning big works like kitchens and bathrooms thinking we will see the best range and value for money choices??? Part is true, you will see a great range, you will sit for hours planning work tops, and door handles, but as much as these are both prac-tical and pretty there is something often overlooked!

When designing working/functional space lighting is a HUGE element that is often uncovered? What is best for your home? What is best for your north facing kitchen/diner, or south facing bathroom? These are questions I bet you will never hear from the designer/sales person across the table? You’re sent off with your quote and a paint chart ready to embrace your build with enthusiasm.

BUT STOP! If you plan the lighting, you will not only be able to make better choices regarding the colouring of your room, but also you will be able to give the builders/tradesmen better information and HOPE-FULLY, save both time and money later on. So once you have your ideas, work out what you

want, then what you need! Would you like a decora-tive pendant? Do spotlights work best? Do you want to dim overhead lighting to create different atmospheres? Do you want lights for specific tasks? Do you want lights in cupboards that are dark and difficult to see? Is age and eyesight against you?

Task lighting ‘What’s that?” LED? Halogen? Strip Light-ing? All of it sounds very complicated and expensive! Honestly it really isn’t. Some versions come with a higher price tag, but up to a 20-year guarantee so in the life of your property it will end up saving you money. Buy the right lighting solutions and not only will you not be up and down ladders changing bulbs, but also you will save money on your energy bills.

So next time you are in the market for a large purchase such as a kitchen or bathroom, ask your designer if they can help with selecting the right lighting for the area? You will be amazed at how much a room can be altered just with lighting alone.

April Pleasure ProjectsIn The Garden

April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into

a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.

Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.

Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flower-ing daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.

You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.

The Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion. Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watered-down version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were intro-duced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land.In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day...Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavillion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes.Chelsea draws over 150 000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over

five days instead of four, such is its popularity. The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breathtaking.Chelsea really is window-shopping at its fin-est. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chel-sea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia.Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come.

April Shooting Star Bonanza: April sees the return of the Lyrids Meteor Shower across Bedfordshire. Peak meteor activity occurs on the night of 22 April – 23 April when skywatchers will be able to catch a hundred or more shooting stars streaking across the sky from the east / south-east between 10pm to 3am the following morning.

Take a Journey to the Edge of the Galaxy: Spring is a great time to explore the outer reaches of our galaxy. Out here, in the galaxy’s halo, lurk ancient spherical clumps of stars known as globular clusters. Each cluster con-tains hundreds of thousands of stars that are almost

as old as the universe itself. The Hercules Globular Cluster, located in the evening sky towards the east not far from the bright star Vega, can be seen with binoculars on a moonless night from the Chilterns.

Find Four Planets in One Evening: The first two weeks in May this year are a great opportunity to see four planets with the naked eye. Mercury is first up. Look low down to your west sixty-minutes after sunset for a shimmering orange dot of light in the evening twilight. Higher up towards the west is dazzling Venus – the brightest star-like object in the night sky. Up and to the left of Venus is a slightly less bright Jupiter, while low

down to the south-east horizon after dark you’ll find pale yellow Saturn.

Many of us will rejoice at the thought of two bank holidays during May. UK bank holidays have been in existence since the 1871 Bank Holidays Act when initially four specific days were created as days off. There have been additions over the years including New Years Day in 1974 and the first Monday in May in 1978. An extra bank holiday was created as a one off event in 2011 for the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on 29th April, and in 2012 for the Queens Diamond Jubilee on 5th June. Bank holidays can be declared by statute or Royal proclamation, the latter is also commonly used to move those holidays that would otherwise fall on a weekend to a week day. There is no automatic right to time off on these days but many employ-ers do pay staff to take the day off or if they work they pay them additional wages. There are frequent campaigns for further bank holidays to be added, commonly in relation to the main Saints days, St David’s, St Patrick’s, St Andrew’s and St George’s for example. Bank Holidays are now frequently chosen as dates for special events and many will choose to book holiday for the full week that includes a bank holiday in order to spend time with family and friends. We can look forward to two bank holidays this May with the Early May Bank Holiday falling on Monday 4th May and the Spring Bank Holiday on Monday 25th May.

The latest Nissan Qashqai, which went on sale in January 2014, is available in four time-honoured grades: Visia, Acenta, Acenta Premium and Tekna.

The model tested here comes in flagship Tekna trim. But we’ll come to that in a bit. Firstly, here’s some background. The second generation, fam-ily oriented car is now longer, lower and wider, giving it a more imposing stance while maintain-ing a raised driving position. The vehicle under review is front-wheel drive, the set-up which Nissan says will account for most sales, but all-wheel drive is avail-able too. The Qashqai's exterior looks modern and there’s a better quality feel to the cabin - perfect for many years of hardcore family use. The range-topping Tekna model features an array of technologies that highlight the Japanese motor manufactur-er’s lead in the crossover market. But hang on, what is a crosso-ver vehicle? Well, it’s a motor built on a car platform, combin-ing characters of a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with elements from an estate or a hatchback. The crossover mixes SUV design cues such as tall interior packaging, lofty seating, high centre of gravity and elevated ground-clearance with car-like handling and good fuel economy.

Anyway, back to the Tekna trim Qashqai under review. The Nissan benefits from darkness piercing Bi-LED headlamps and it excels when it comes to kit. The car comes equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, part-leather seats, a large glass roof, heated seats, and front and rear parking sensors. There’s also a seven-inch touchscreen display, DAB digital radio, and smartphone connectivity. The Qashqai is available with a petrol or diesel engine; the review car came with turbocharged petrol power. But it turns out that the Nissan doesn’t need anything huge under the bonnet to deliver a first-rate drive. Motoring through a six-speed manual transmission, the 1.2-litre engine packs a punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater flexibility than the first generation Qashqai’s 1.6-litre unit.Despite its modest size, the engine’s low weight and more fuel-efficient operation also mean it’s cleaner and more economi-cal than the model it replaces. The 1.2 engine emits just 129g/km of CO₂ (15g/km less than the outgoing 1.6-litre petrol unit), and has an average fuel consumption figure of 50.4mpg.Being a family car, you’d expect safety to be a priority for the Qashqai – and you’d be right. The Nissan features a host of innova-tive safety features which helped it confidently pass all Euro NCAP's tests to record the maximum five-star rating.

Engineered to offer the best possible levels of protection for children, the fresh Qashqai particularly shone in the Child Occupant tests. Based on readings from the dummies used in tests, the Qashqai scored maximum points for its protection of an 18-month old infant. On that basis alone, I’m sold on the car – but then I do have an 18 month old and two other small children to take to school. I can definitely see the appeal – and so, it seems, do other parents.

Yep, buy this car and your offspring will be safe from harm – even if it means you lose all indi-viduality when you merge into the vast sea of other Nissan Qashqais parked outside the school gates.

Easter without chocolate eggs would be like Christmas without presents. Simply unthink-able! And yet the tradition of giving chocolate at Easter is relatively recent, dating back 120

years or so to the late nineteenth century.Easter is a Christian festival that commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Occurring in Spring, which is regarded as a time of renewal and birth by many faiths and cultures, the egg has been used as a symbol of birth and fertility since well before Christianity. Originally painted bright colours to celebrate the sunlight of spring, decorating and colouring eggs became popular during the Middle Ages, when they were dyed red to symbolise the blood of Christ. For-bidden as a food during Lent, eggs were hard-boiled, decorated and then given to children at Easter as good luck symbols. In the eighteenth century, pasteboard or papier mache eggs with small gifts inside became popular and by the nineteenth century these had evolved into cardboard eggs covered in silk, lace or velvet and fastened with ribbon. Faberge produced its first egg in 1883, and elaborate eggs made from silver and gold, ivory and porcelain - some inlaid with jewels - followed. The first chocolate eggs were made in France and Germany in the early nineteenth century, not long after the first eating chocolate was invented (prior

to this chocolate was enjoyed as a drink). But the chocolate couldn’t be moulded and early eggs were solid. Chocolate eggs didn’t truly gain in popularity until Cadbury entered the market in 1875. Their early eggs were made from dark chocolate with a plain, smooth surface. Filled with dragees (small, hard sweets), they were decorated with chocolate piping and marzi-pan flowers. The range gradually increased until in 1893 Cadbury was producing 19 different lines, but it wasn’t until 1905 when the company introduced Cadbury Dairy Milk that the sales of Easter eggs re-ally received a boost. All-chocolate eggs did not immediately replace the novelty eggs of the Victorian era, however, and Cad-bury continued to produce a fancy cardboard egg filled with chocolates until the early 1930s.The first crème eggs appeared in 1923 as a forerun-ner to the Cadbury Creme Egg, launched in 1971. An instant hit, it has now become Cadbury’s most popular egg, with over 500 million being made every year, though shell eggs still form the largest sector of the Easter egg market. So, we have Cadbury to thank for our modern day Easter egg, and in particular their invention of Dairy Milk. How ironic, then, that this year they should recently decide to replace the nation’s favourite chocolate on their most popular egg with an alterna-tive! Will Easter ever be the same again?

Hands & FeetMost of us neglect our feet. They spend much of their lives covered up – out of sight and out of mind – and yet I for one love to give them the occasional pamper and am convinced they thank me for it!A pedicure, professionally done, is a therapeutic treatment for feet which can support chiropody if you have foot problems, can assist posture by helping you to walk more comfortably and can soothe and relax you whilst being done.Typically, a pedicure will begin with a soak of your feet in warm, scented water which will

both cleanse and soften the skin. This is then followed by an exfoliating rub

to get rid of dead skin. Salts and minerals are used, but exfoliation may also be done with pumice, especially on the heels or ball of the foot.

A massage of the feet with creams and aromatherapy oils follows, to

refresh and soften the skin. You may also be treated to a massage of the lower

leg. Finally, cuticles will be clipped and nails cut and shaped before nail polish is applied to send you away with pretty toes! Any style of polish can be applied, from a French pedicure with white tips to gel polish which gives a long-lasting glossy finish which dries instantly. With summer approaching, now is the time to get your feet ready for those open toe sandals!

A healthy diet is important. Eating proteins, and food or supplements that contain vitamins B and E will help you have healthy, strong nails and soft and supple skin. Regularly moisturise your hands with a good quality product. Winter tends to dry out our skin so use a heaver lotion during the colder months. Massage lotion in when you apply it to help it soak in. If your hands are particularly rough add Vaseline. Protect your hands with gloves when washing up, cleaning, gardening or doing other chores. Use lukewarm water when washing your hands and never use normal dish soap as this tends to be too harsh and can dry the skin. Trim your nails every two weeks or more often if required. When filing your nails file in one direction rather than using a seesaw action. Apply a scrub to your hands with a good exfoliating agent once a week to get rid of dead skin. In addition to moisturisers, hand creams and scrubs try a cuticle cream or lotion to stop cuticles drying out. If you paint your nails, always use a base coat so that your nails don’t stain. For extra pampering, go for a manicure once a month.

Look after your hands & feet and they will serve

you well!

Help support some of the 75,000 children that leave primary school every year in England struggling with their reading.

Could you help children learn to read? Could you inspire a love of reading and books in children?

You could help today by contacting Beanstalk Charity on 01604 720969 or visiting www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk/reading-helpers

and apply to become a Beanstalk Reading Helper.

Unfortunately many children can not, with 75,000 children in England leaving primary school last year struggling or behind with their reading. Would you enjoy developing a love of books and reading with children in the Luton and Dunstable areas, providing children with a lifelong skill? Beanstalk Charity is looking for Reading Helper volunteers to support children with their reading in schools and you could help.

Beanstalk is a national charity that has recently launched in the Luton and Dunstable areas to support some of the 75,000 children that leave primary school every year in England behind with their reading.

There is a strong need for volunteers in the Luton and Dunstable areas and if you feel you could help in any way please get in touch. Each Reading Helper works with 3 children, for 30 minutes each, twice a week and continues to work with the same children throughout the school year, enabling the Reading Helper to see the children grow in their enjoyment and confidence of reading.

If you feel you could make a difference to a child’s life or to find out further information about Beanstalk you can call us on 01604 720969, email [email protected] or visit our website www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk/reading-helpers.

Mabel’s News

from Appledown

Hello again! I am Mabel the resident dog at Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray.

I nee

d a home!

Young at heart! This is Candy Southern, she is a boxer cross. At 10-11 years of age many dogs are starting to slow down but Candy is amazingly sprightly for her age. This playful and affectionate girl still loves a game of ball and a nice walk! We believe that Candy is house-trained and would cope with being left for short periods once she has settled in. She would need to be an only pet. If you feel you could offer Candy, or any of our other dogs, a loving and secure home please call in at the kennels any day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Our staff will be happy to offer advice and information. We have restrictions on rehoming dogs to families with children under 7 years of age, so please ask for details.

I need a home!

This is Chipolata, she is a Jack Russell cross aged 4-5 years. She is bigger than the average Jack Russell, but we can’t decide what she might be crossed with! Chipolata is an active little dog and needs a home where she will get plenty of exercise and attention. She could live with a male dog but not a cat. We think she may have lived outside in the past but she loves a cuddle and will enjoy the opportunity to curl up in front of the fire and be part of family life! She cannot live in Luton. If you feel you could offer Chipolata, or any of our other dogs, a loving and secure home please call in at the kennels any day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Our staff are happy to offer advice and information. Please note that we have restrictions on rehoming dogs to families with children under seven, so please ask for details.

Could you sponsor a kennel to help us care for a dog while it is waiting to find a new home? Please contact us for details.

Hairspray:You can save on buying a strong hold hair-spray as you just want something that does the job well. However, you should splurge on a fine hold hairspray as the ingredients will allow you to brush it out and restyle without leaving any flakes or white marks.

Shampoo, Conditioner & TreatmentsThese are the foundations of your hair styl-ing so you should definitely splurge here. You most definitely get what you pay for – we’ve recently launched a luxury range, Couture Hair, and the ingredients are far superior and have more scientific listing of ingredients. You’ll find more expensive ranges that you won’t need to use as much as they are concentrated so they last longer, often they are multi-tasking too. With an intensive conditioning masque you will only use this once or twice a week so it’s a treat and should leave your hair feeling renewed and rejuvenated so you should definitely splurge on this.

Pastes/GelsYou’re looking for texture and hold with these types of styling products and quite of-ten you’ll find that a cheaper brand perform just as well. You’re using just small amounts so as long as you’re not overloading your hair, you can look at saving on these.

VolumisersNearly all women love volume – you want that natural feel without it feeling weighed down, sticky or too heavy so definitely look at splurging here too. I prefer a spritz style volumiser as you can target specific areas.

HairdryerThis is another splurge I’m afraid! It really does pay to invest in a professional hairdryer – I’m loving the new Collexia that includes a keratin or protein treatment so it’s actually treating your hair as you dry it. Professional hairdryers are initially more expensive but you do cut your drying time down signifi-cantly and this is only a good thing for the condition of your hair.

Leighton Buzzard to Clophill – 26 milesOn Saturday 18th April 2015 the Greensand Ridge Rovers Team will, for the third year running, be raising vital funds for The Brain Tumour Charity, the UK’s leading charity dedi-cated to fighting this devastating disease, by walking half or full marathon distance (13 m or 26 m) of the Greensand Ridge in Bedford-shire, starting at Tesco, near Leighton Buzzard centre, finishing at Ridgmont, (half) or Clophill,(full). The organiser, Carol, was inspired to hold this event after nearly losing her life to an undiag-nosed brain tumour in 2012. During 2014’s event the Greensand Ridge Rovers, made up

of friends and family, raised over £6000. Carol said: “It’s wonderful to be holding the event again for such an important cause, it’s fantastic that so many of last year’s walkers are keen to join us again in raising funds for The Brain Tu-mour Charity. The Event also helps publicise the signs and symptoms of brain tumours that are so often missed, even by health profession-als. Switching Energy SupplierWith the government’s newly launched ‘Power to Switch’

campaign encouraging people to change their energy supplier to save money, resolver.co.uk’s James Walker looks into the

ins and outs of switching and saving.

According to the latest government figures, 13.5 million households across the UK (that’s more than half of all homes) could collectively be saving £2.7bn per year simply by switching energy company.Ed Davey, Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said: “When it comes to switching, the power is in people’s hands to get a better deal and save.“We’ve reformed the market so that there are more suppliers, more competition, and a much faster and simpler process to switch. That means millions of people can switch supplier and save hundreds of pounds today”

What’s the government done, then? The main reform the Department for Energy and Climate Change has made is halving the time it takes to switch suppliers – this is now down to just 17 days, from 35 days in 2014.There have been other changes, too, including encouraging new small energy suppliers (more than 20 of them). These are independent companies intent on challenging the confusing and expensive tariffs of the mainstream ‘Big Six’ energy companies. The government is also backing Ofgem (that’s the energy industry regulator) reforms that force energy companies to make energy bills clearer. If you’re unhappy with the service

you’ve received, make sure you let your energy supplier know rather than simply switching. You never know – your energy firm might agree to cut you a better deal! You can raise any issue you have with your energy provider via resolver.co.uk

Ofgem’s part & the Confidence CodeOfgem has beefed-up its Confi-dence Code for price comparison websites, setting tighter standards on how tariffs are displayed, with websites given until the end of March to comply. This is what the Money Advice Service (a free & impartial service set up by government) has to say about switching and the Confi-dence Code:“How can you find the cheapest energy tariff? Simply run a quick and free energy comparison on one of the websites which have agreed to be impartial and independent as part of Ofgem’s Confidence Code. Feel free to run a comparison on several websites as they may give you different results. Some even of-fer bonuses such as cashback when you switch.“Once you’ve picked a comparison website, you’ll need to arm yourself with a copy of a recent energy bill. The bill will contain the information you need to switch, including the name of your current supplier and energy tariff, as well as your usage in kWh.

“Input all of this information into the comparison website and unless you’re already on the cheapest plan, you should end up with a list of cheaper tariffs. Check your bill to see if you’ll be charged exit fees before making a decision.”You can find the Money Advice Service’s guide on energy switching along with a list of free comparison sites at www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles

Don’t be fooled by price cutsRecent price cuts by the Big Six energy suppliers (British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON UK, SSE and Scottish Power and npower) might save you money, but mostly they’ve been quite small. So don’t be lulled into thinking you’ve got a good deal; it’s almost certainly still worth shopping around.Of course, if you don’t fancy the hassle of changing supplier, your energy company is obliged to let you know if there’s a cheaper tariff available

Big vs SmallNewer small energy companies such as First Utility or OVO Energy are challenging the stranglehold of the Big Six on the market by offer-ing temptingly cheap tariff. Be brave and go for one of these if it makes financial sense; guaranteed service standards mean you’ll never be left without power or heat.
