The summer break had us coectvey tryng to coo down

whe aso relectng back on some o the great stores we

coudnt te back n the a. For exampe,Thanksgvng break

here at The Art Insttute o Austn, a branch o The Art Insttute o

Houston, s usuay a tme where students are overjoyed to have

a break or about a week. However, you were to run nto one o

the AIGA, proessona assocaton or desgn, student members,

you mght have receved a bt o a dferent experence. You see,

ths past Thanksgvng break, the AIGA Student Group partc-pated n the 1st ever Renegade Crat Far Hoday Market n Austn.

Renegade Crat Far s a market pace event that s ree to attend

and happens n varous ocatons ncudng Brookyn, Chcago, San

Francsco, Los Angees, Austn, and London. It eatures hundreds

o artsts and vendors who trave around to showcase ther hand-

made goods. It began n 2003 n Chcago and n 2010 had ts rst

showng n good oe Austn, TX and on November 2627, 2011 the

Hoday Market or Austn took pace and the AIGA Student Group

eatured ther very own booth.

As you can magne, ths was an awesome opportunty or the

AIGA student members who partcpated because o so much

traic comng through on a hoday weekend and havng a chance

to show some o ther work. It was such a great opportunty. We

have so many creatve peope wth a range o taents. It was a great

patorm or us to show our stuf as a group wth so many peope

comng through, Jessca Cark, Bacheor o Fne Art n Graphc Ds

gn, AIGA student member, sad.

O course, ts not qute as easy as t seemed, to have a boothat the Renegade Crat Far, an abundance o work had to be done

more so than what the students were ntay prepared or n the

begnnng A speca commttee was ormed to ocus drecty on

the event n ts entrety. Athough t was of to a sow start or actu

portunty to voce our opnons on thngs we woud change, thngs

we wanted, and any concerns we had wth how the quarter was go-

As a student, I et ke they reay cared about our eedback whch

was very rereshng.

I reazed durng ths event that ths s actuay somethng students

need to start partcpatng n, t reay s vta to our attendance here

at A Austn! Here are just a ew thngs I earned just by sttng n at

Dne wth the Deans. Theyre gong to be mosty Genera Educaton

casses, and the Le Drawng casses. There was aso the concern

about parkng, we a know how crowded the parkng ot gets every-

day. Because o the new space down the road, the parkng ot w be

more spacous and ess overwhemng.

Dne wth the Deans opened my eyes to so many new thngs here

at schoo, and I hghy recommend everyone attendng the next one.

It seems to be an essenta asset to our educatona e here.

ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE

Durng the Fa Quarter ashon cass, Saes and Event Promoton,

aong wth a cunary cass produced a Hoday Soree. The Hoday

Soree was tted Its a Wonderu Le and was open to current

students, prospect students, and parents. The event was ed

wth actvtes such as a gngerbread house competton and tacky

sweater contest. The party was meant to engage the prospectvestudents whe entertanng the current students through actv-tes and eowshp. There was aso ood and treats provded. The

Hoday Party took pace on December 3, 2011 at 4:00PM.Leadng up to the event the ashon students had some uncon-

ventona promotng tactcs that they used to create awareness

or the party. They used caros and changed the yrcs to have the

partys normaton and went to varous cassrooms and sang to the

students. They aso passed out lyers and answered any questons.

In addton to ther carong they aso had a lash mob durng the

staf were entertaned by the creatve promotng strateges.Because there was an open house or prospectve students n

A Austn Luxe was chartered n Juy o 2011 durng the Summer Quarter. Last year t started out as Fashon Cub, but as you can te, the

name acked presence. Even though t mght have taken a tte tme to

agree on a na name, everyone nay came together and voted onA

Luxe as the wnner. Cate Warrck, A Austn Luxe Presdent, wanted

the cub to be a pace students o any major coud come and earn

about the ns and outs o the Fashon Industry. Warrck had a vson

or A Austn Luxe. In our msson statement, theres a ne that states

Ths cub s to be based on nner beauty, not just whats on the out

sde.Whe what were wearng s mportant, ts how we wear that cer

Dane Henry went to the Un-

versty o North Carona at

Pembroke to study Marketng

and Pubc Reatons. He then

competed hs masters at The

Unversty o Texas at Austn

n Advertsng. He tutored stu-

dents at UT and then began teachng at A Austn n the summer

quarter o 2011. Henry teaches Fundamentas o Advertsng,

Fundamentas o Marketng, Product Deveopment, and Meda

Pannng and Buyng at A Austn. Apart rom teachng, Henry

ounded a producton company and perorms Advertsng, Pub-

c Reatons, Marketng, and Producton or natonay recog-nzed non-prot companes. Some o the non-prot companes

he has worked wth are Envronmenta Deense Fund, Operaton

Ward 57, and Just a Cean House, to name a ew.

When Dane Henry was n coege, hs aspraton was to be-

come a basketba payer. However, he reazed that mght be

unreastc so he began to ocus on hs academcs. One o Hen-

rys undergraduate proessors saw potenta n hm, mentored

hm and heped hm nd a drecton rom sports to schoo. Henry

aong wth hs proessor started the Pubc Reatons Student So-

cety o Amerca Cub. They began the cub rom scratch, whch

utmatey showed Henry how to bud somethng rom the

ground up. The schoos chapter steady grew weeky startng

wth ony 3 peope and then by the oowng year, 20+ peope.Henrys academc years have aowed hm to be a ar proessor

and strve or students to go above and beyond n a o ther

projects.

Hs boxng coach, Rchard Lord, nspres hm as Henry says,

Rchard s a true athete and even at 57 s n better shape than

anyone n the gym. Henry boxes compettvey and trans ev-

ery day. Boxng heps hm prepare mentay and physcay or

the word. I you can survve n the rng wth an opponent who

s physcay tryng to hurt you, the word becomes ess scary,

Henry says. Henry has won two Goden Goves n dferent states:

Charotte, North Carona and Austn, Texas. Boxng keeps me

humbe, says Henry, and t drves me to the best I can be.

In the years ahead, Henry pans to contnue teachng and pro-

ducng and s consderng a PhD n the next year. However, he

recenty has started wrtng scrpts and wants to get nvoved

n the move ndustry. Henry woud ove to produce moves by

ncorporatng entertanment and educaton. Hs goa s to con-

tnue wrtng stores that teach the audence as we as contnu-

ng to hep non-prots.

Short ddnt aways thnk about beng a graphc desgner.When

I was tte I wanted to become an engneer and desgn cars. I don

know anythng about cars though. So I thnk ts a good thng I ddn

oow that, Short sad. When she was n hgh schoo, she was nvoved n the theatre program and when her theatre drector asked

her to desgn the posters or the program, she made her start n the

desgn ndustry. Athough she started out n ne art, when her hgh

schoo theatre drector recommended that she ook nto graphc de

sgn, she qucky earned about t and decded to try t. I started ou

n ne art. I reay ove to pant and dong anythng wth my hands

and Im aways ookng or somethng new to do. I tred Graphc De

sgn and I ked t, Short sad.

workshop they woud be hostng. The workshop was makng tm

out answerng questons. To oow ths theme o tme they c

ucts. It was a very successu day wth a ton o progress made

O course not! AIGA Student members may not have had a com

day o the show came and the commttee to set up showed up

and eary. It was mornng and the crew was runnng a bt sowe

crat ar speed so there were a ew mnor probems wth settbooth up, but you aways have to be prepared or the unexpected

tte tme et to nsh the set up, the workshop was set up and the

ucts were hung up. The peope began to pass by and the next 40

were qute the new experence or most o the members.

The Renegade Crat Far Hoday Market n Austn was a hug

cess or the AIGA student group. Everyone nvoved worked ha

accompshed an experence that they a enjoyed. It was stres

was encouragng, and t was un.Partcpatng n Renegade was

amount o work and pannng, but t was rewardng to work sde-b

wth other desgners to accompsh a bug group project. I wa

RACE FOR THE CURE

Sunday November 13, 2011 the streets o downtown Austn were

bocked of or a speca occason. Thousands o ndvduas gath-

ered together n the sprt o supportng the organzaton SusanG. Komen Race or the Cure. Snce t was ony a 5K, there were a

wde varety o partcpants rangng rom todders aongsde ther

parents to the edery wakng wth ther wakers. I woke up at 7AM

that mornng so excted to jump nto somethng great, an event

I remember or a etme. The tmed runners started at 7:30AM,

whe the non-tmed runners had anywhere rom 8AM-10AMto start

the race. Consderng Im not a runner by any means, I was pannng

on startng around 8:30-9AMjonng the others who just wanted to

have un and take ther tme.

Ater grabbng my regstraton packet, t-shrt, and bb, I headed

towards the startng ne. I wasnt aone durng the race, whch madewakng three mes go a tte smoother. I waked wth Dane Rouda,

our Dean o Student Afars, and another student, Aaron Leonard.

We graceuy crossed the ne, and as we began the race, ths rush o

exctement lowed through my body.We passed by photographers,

peope passng out key chans, and mutpe partcpants decked out

n pnk. The pnk eather boa I had on bew n the wnd as we waked,
