Our Cover is of St Mary's Church in Great Massingham one of the now ten

Churches in our group. St Mary, of course, was the loving mother of Jesus.

This by Maureen Hawkins tells us all we need to know about Mothers(& Fathers too).

Before you were conceived, I wanted you. Before you were born, I loved you. Before

you were an hour old, I would give my life for you. This is the miracle of a Mother's

    Love.

Your Mother loved you from the moment you were born & will love you every day of

her life. That's what Mothers do.

So on March 15th.,Mothering Sunday, remember your mother with a visit, a call, a

card.........and always with a prayer of thanks for her support, her encouragement

    and her love. Steve

    Mothering Sunday: 15 March 2015

Mothering Sunday is an opportunity to pause and reflect on what our mums - or

those who love us and look after us - really mean to us. It's a celebration that

originates from the Middle Ages when, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people gave

thanks to God for the Mother Church and remembered the Blessed Virgin Mary,

Mother of Jesus. Traditionally it was a day when young people who were working

away from home were given the day off work to take presents home and share a

family meal together, with permission to break the Lenten fast, so it also became

known as Refreshment Sunday. As they walked along the country lanes they would

pick nosegays of wild flowers to give to their mothers. Food particularly associated

with Mothering Sunday included Simnel cake - fruit cake topped with almond paste,

sugar violets and 11 marzipan balls representing the 11 disciples of Jesus- Judas

was excluded; and frumenty wheat boiled in milk and sweetened with sugar and

cinnamon. Mothering Sunday was universally regarded as a good thing but over

many years, as more people moved to live in towns it declined in popularity.

After the First and especially the Second World Wars, with the arrival of many

American servicemen, Mother's Day came to the UK from America, where it had

been enthusiastically introduced in 1907 by Miss Anna Jarvis, a school-teacher from

Philadelphia. It had the aim of celebrating mothers everywhere and as commercial

interests became involved, the marketing of cards and gift items took off and we took

    Mother's Day to our hearts.

Mothering Sunday was revived too, due to the efforts of Constance Penswick-Smith,

a vicar's wife from Nottinghamshire who fought a 30-year campaign, lobbying

parliament and Church leaders, sending leaflets all over the world. Nowadays

Mother's Day and Mothering Sunday are intertwined; each year there are special

services in the Church of England with the customary little bunches of Spring

flowers, very often involving young people and schools.

Mothering Sunday is a great opportunity to pamper our mums and the people who

love us and look after us with flowers, chocolates and perhaps breakfast in bed?

What will you do for your mum this year?

    Reverend Judith Pollard.

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land Feb 2015

The journey of a lifetime and one which more than fulfilled expectations.

The pilgrims were all from the Norwich Diocese and led by the Bishop of Norwich,

the Rt Rev'd Graham James, Bishop of Thetford and the Dean of Norwich Cathedral.

We journeyed to the Sea of Galilee, and Nazareth and then on to Bethlehem, where

we stayed for several days and journeyed into Jerusalem. There we experienced the

Via Dolorosa, and the site of the crucifixion, the Garden of Gethsemane, the house

of Caiaphas, the Kidron valley, the Western Wall and much more.

Many sites and many moving experiences, not least of which was to celebrate the

Eucharist on the shores of Lake Galilee, and to pray for our benefice, as part of the

diocesan prayer rota, on the edge of the lake.

We did much more than just visit, but then is that not what a pilgrimage is all

about. a journey of discovery, a time for God to find us and to enable us, with

guided and prayerful direction, as we journey back home and then onwards from

there. As a colleague said to me,

Even if there are many places telling you that Jesus walked here and making

claims for his presence in that place, there is one thing that you must do. That is to

see the dawn appear over the Sea of Galilee, as it comes up between the dark hills

and that first shaft of light hits the water, then you know that Jesus would have seen

that same shaft of light so many years ago.

    Rev'd Sue Martin

New beginners' walks in The Walks

A new walk has been added to the ever-popular Fit Together Free Guided Walks

    programme designed especially for beginners.

Easy Walking Wednesday will take place at 10.30am every Wednesday in The Walks,

King's Lynn. Each walk is aimed at beginners or people recovering from illness or

injury and will be led by a trained volunteer walk leader. There will be distances to suit

everyone and plenty of support and encouragement from the walk leader.

All of the walks are free. Participants are asked to complete a short health

questionnaire before the start of the walk and should arrive 15 minutes early.

Places must be booked in advance by contacting the walk co-ordinator on 01553

616657 or by emailing: [email protected].

HAY FEVERThe hay fever season will start soon, so be prepared.

    Order your repeat prescriptions

If you have previously had a prescription for hay fever treatments, you do

not need to make an appointment to obtain further supplies. Written repeat

prescription requests should be sent to the dispensary.

    Prescription costs

Over-the-counter nasal sprays usually cost about the same as a

prescription charge. A month's supply of antihistamine tablets usually

costs substantially more when bought over-the-counter than they cost on

    prescription.

Start treatment for hay fever early

All treatments work better if started before the onset of the hay fever

season late March or early April is a sensible time to start.

    Urgent Appeal:

    New Treasurer needed for

    Leziate, Ashwicken and

    Bawsey Village Hall

    Management Committee

The village hall is situated in the centre

of Leziate, and is a focal point for a wide

    variety of community organisations and

events. The Committee comprises of a

small group of volunteers who meet

every two months. It works hard to focus

on service to the community - keeping

the Hall running smoothly following a

    major refurbishment in 2014.

Our current Treasurer will stand down at

the AGM and without a new Treasurer

the Committee will fold resulting in the

    Hall being forced to close.

We are looking to recruit somebody who

can fulfil this key role, so if you have a

little spare time to give to your Village

then please get in touch and come and

meet us, maybe you are a regular hirer

and would not like to see the hall close,

for more information call 01553 630756.

A decision will be made following the th

    AGM on 19 March 2015.

    ASHWICKEN

    CHURCH OF ENGLAND

    PRIMARY SCHOOL

The building work at Ashwicken School

is well underway now and the next stage

is to add the roof and make the building

    watertight.

The building team have been giving the

children lessons in bricklaying and they

    have produced some impressive walls!

The children also took part in a 'Site

    Safety' poster competition and the

winning posters will be displayed along

    the building site fence.

    LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL

    th

The Council met on Wed. 11 February.

    The Village Hall Committee sent

representatives to the meeting as, after

the AGM in March, they will have no

    Treasurer. Without the essential officers

the Committee can no longer operate

and so there is a desperate need to

appoint a Treasurer. If you would like to

get more involved with the village and

this is a role you may be interested in,

then get in touch with Pauline the Chair

of the Village Hall Committee. I don't

think any of us would want to see the

Village Hall disappearing for lack of a

Treasurer, but at the moment this is a

    real possibility.

A brief update on the Bawsey Lakes

proposal was given. A developer has

come forward who wishes to purchase

the site and at these preliminary stages

it looks as though his plans are much in

line with the responses of the

    questionnaires received from residents.

    There are meetings planned and

hopefully there will be more news next

    meeting.

Also next meeting the Parish Council are

going to discuss provision of a

defibrillator in our Parish. If you would

like to voice an opinion on this or any

other parish issue, then you are invited

to come to the next meeting. We always

have a time allocated for residents to

    have their say.

The discussion of better broadband was

    continued. If you are experiencing

problems with speeds and it is affecting

your business please let the Clerk know

on 01553 630655. We will continue to

press our MP, County Councillor and

Borough Councillor for an answer as to

when our Parish will get higher speeds.

The Parish Council are very impressed

with our flashing speed signs and think

that it does encourage lower speeds,

special thanks were given to Cllr Barnett

for all the time he spends on managing

    these for the parish.

Next meeting of the Parish Council is on th

11 March 2015 at Leziate Village Hall.

This meeting will start at 7.30pm, we

hope Anglian Water will be present to

answer questions and provide details of

the next phase of their mains sewerage

    scheme. All are welcome.

    GAYTON NEWS

    St Nicholas Churchyard

There are still a large amount of

    Christmas wreaths on graves please

could these be removed and placed in

the bins provided by the car park gate.

The churchyard looks in a bit of a mess

at the moment due to the wet weather..

    Continued building work should be

finished by the end of March and the

churchyard restored to its former self. It

will take time for the grass to regrow.

We have in the past told you that we

intend to remove the mounds from

graves over 12 months old to make it

easier for the mower to travel between

the lines of gravestones. It would be a

great help if relatives could remove these

for us; the soil can be placed by the back

gate - the same place as gravediggers'

use- this can then be spread over lower

places in the churchyard. Those graves

that have not been done by relatives will

be lowered later in the year when we can

organise a group to do so.

If anybody is unsure of the churchyard

regulations please ask to see a copy,

there is one displayed in the church on

the notice board inside the North door.

There should only be one vase per grave

placed by the headstone not in the

    centre of the grave.

When you order a head stone from your

stonemason please ask them to remove

the mound when they site the stone. In

    the past the Stonemason has

automatically done this but it seems now

    they have to be ask.

Should you have any concerns about

this please contact the vicar or any PCC

    member.

Thank you from the ladies of St

    Nicholas Church Flower Rota

We have a sincere thank you for two of

our ladies that have retired from the

flower rota. Lady Romney for all her

valuable help over many years with the

flowers and events in the Church, you

will be greatly missed. Also Sheila

Thompson who has been a member of

the group for a long time and has also

helped with many events. We will miss

    you Sheila.

We welcome Margaret Dennis onto the

flower arranger group and would like to

extend our thanks to John and

    Maryanne Nash who, again, kindly

donated the lovely Christmas Tree for

the Church this Christmas. It is

    appreciated by us all.

If anyone is interested in joining our

group of friendly flower ladies, please

ring Val on 636614 or Margaret on

    Gayton Church Of England School

    Apple Class - Dragons Den

Over the past few weeks Apple Class

(Year 1) have had an Alien visit as part

of their Out of This World topic. They

have had to do lots of things for him

such as writing instructions. He asked

them to create a new product to take

back to space. The Alien sent some

Dragons into school to decide which

    product to invest in.

They worked in groups to invent a

    product, write an instruction booklet,

draw and label a design, make a TV

    advert and create a presentation.

On the day we dressed in our smartest

clothes and were very excited to pitch

to the Dragons. We were all very

    confident and delivered our pitch

    clearly to the Dragons .

    Gayton WI

Due to the icy conditions, the February meeting which should have taken place on rd th.

Tues 3 had to be postponed until Tues 24 The report from this evening will be in

    the April TOVT.th

Meanwhile on Feb 14 members Penny Andrews Gillian Smith and Jan Newman,

went along to the Forum in Norwich where a small WI exhibition was being held.

This is the Centenary year of the WI in the United Kingdom (the very first to set up

was in Wales) and this year, WI's from all over are being encouraged to 'do'

something a little different; hence there was a large notice board in place for

suggestions from members of the public, amongst them were: visits to schools and

to teach cooking skills, using cheaper cuts of meat and leftovers.

Do you have any suggestions ? if so please let us know.

There were also photo's that were taken of trees throughout the seasons, which

were used in the Federation 2014 calendar, and posters of recent a competition.

The WI set many competitions, they help woman to keep minds and thinking alert,

using their many skills that may otherwise become redundant.

A number of small wall hangings were on display, each WI in Norfolk had hand

embroidered their own piece of fabric roughly 5x7 inches depicting what they

thought their branch represented, they were then carefully sewn together and made

into wall hangings, of course Gayton's was featured.

Archive material was also displayed. The WI is the largest woman's organisation in

the UK and can boast of 200,000 members belonging to 6,500 WI's.

At our January meeting all the members were presented with a centenary badge,

depicting the centenary rose, these worn by our three members at the exhibition

were greatly admired by ladies they met there from Winterton WI, they also

'bumped' into the Federation secretary Mrs Cindy Brooks and her husband, whom

we take it as read is a very good WI husband!

The three ladies rounded off their morning with an enjoyable lunch.

Gayton WI is open to all Woman, in the village or surrounding areas and we

welcome and look forward to new members. Why not come along and see what we st

are all about on the 1 Tuesday of each month 7-30pm in the Gayton Jubilee Village

The January 21 meeting took place in

the Jubilee Hall, it was quite a nice day

for the time of year and we had an

    attendance of 43 members.

Ms Doreen Read was our guest speaker

and she kept us all amused with her

poems about everyday life, which is

always funnier in retrospect than when it

actually happens, so we all had a good

    laugh.

We then had tea and enjoyed

homemade cake. Two people won the

Football Tote, Mrs Becky Dearn and Mr

Arthur Franklin each winning 5. The

Raffle was drawn before the enjoyable

afternoon was brought to a close.

This report will be sent to the TVOTV th

before our February 18 meeting when

we will be looking forward to hearing

    about Workers, Wellies and

    Wheelbarrows. from our guest speaker

    Charlotte Phillcox.

    Important Notice

The Halls AGM will be held on the st

Tuesday evening of March 31 2015 at

    7-30pm.

If there is anyone who is interested in

becoming a Managing Trustee of the

Hall, please come along to this meeting.

At this present time there are four

Trustees, Three are stepping down from

the position, this is due to personal

    reasons, the remaining person cannot

manage the Hall on their own, there

needs to be four minimum and nine

    maximum.

The Parish Council do not manage the

Hall, they are the custodians on behalf

of the Village. The Hall belongs to the

    Village.

Our Jubilee Village Hall is one that we

can all be proud of; over the past eight

    years it has undergone vast

improvements inside and out, it is

greatly admired by visitors, it has an

ambience that is warm and welcoming

    with first class facilities.

TO CLOSE THE DOORS on this very

special building because of the lack of

interest would be very sad indeed.

    HOWEVER THIS IS WHAT WILL

HAPPEN IF, NO NEW TRUSTEES CAN

    BE FOUND.

Hopefully if the Hall remains open the

regular meetings of all our groups will

be able to continue as they are at

    present, plus private hire.

    Gayton Parish Council News

    th

    Meeting held 9 February 2015

    New Councillor

The Council was pleased to welcome

Kirsty Vokes to join the Council and fill

    the existing vacancy. Kirsty was

successfully co-opted and will join the

Council at the March meeting. The

Council now has a full complement of 11

    Councillors.

    Local Development Framework

    Site Allocations and Policies

    The Council considered the Borough

    Council's Pre-Submission document

again and noted that the site that the

Borough has chosen as its preferred site

is at the same location to the site that

    several residents expressed concerns

about in May 2014 when it was

submitted late in the consultation period,

    for consideration for development. The

main concern relates to the access to

the site from an already congested part

of Back Street and the effect a new

    development and therefore more traffic

    movements will have. The Council

agreed to ask the Borough to make it a

    condition of any planning application

agreed at the site that studies on the

effect of the development on traffic flow

in Back Street should be produced along

with a feasibility study on the possibility

of making Back Street one way to help

the flow of traffic. These are additional

    comments to those already agreed

    regarding the drainage issues.

    CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy

    )

The Council considered the possibility of

the Borough Council introducing a CIL

which would see developers pay a set

fee to the Council as a levy per square

metre of any new development over

100m squared. 15% of this revenue

would go to the Parish Council in the

Parish that the development would take

place in or 25% if the Parish Council had

    a Neighbourhood Plan. The Council

agreed that it would, in principle, support

the introduction of a CIL. It was also

generally agreed that the costs of the

    production of a Neighbourhood Plan

would still outweigh the extra 10%

revenue that the Parish Council would

receive through the CI if it had a plan in

    place.

    PCSOs

The Clerk confirmed that in order for the

Parish to have its own dedicated PCSO,

the annual cost would be 16,782 to the

Council. This would mean that the

PCSO would be 100% dedicated to the

    Parish. The Constabulary confirmed that

several Parishes could join together to

share the PCSO and therefore reduce

their costs, however, the Parish Council

agreed that it believed the scheme to be

morally and financially wrong and did not

want to take part in it.

    Next Parish Council Meeting

The next Parish Council Meeting will be th

held at 7.30pm on 9 March at Gayton

    Jubilee Hall.

    All Saints' Tower update

The tower at the church is in poor condition, and an application to Heritage Lottery

Fund was made last year. Initial investigations, for which we have already received

(and spent) a large amount of money, have been completed, and we are now waiting

with bated breath for the Lottery's decision to allow us to go ahead with the works.

Meanwhile, we have continued to fundraise to cover the part of the cost not covered

by Heritage Lottery Fund. We have had a wonderful response from two local

businesses - 250 from Middleton Aggregates and no less than 3000 from Adrian

    Flux! We are so grateful!

    Parish Council Meeting 2nd March

Our NCC councillor, Toby Coke, has agreed to attend this meeting and talk to us

about the A47, what he foresees can be done to improve our situation, and what we

can do to help bring it about. He is the chairman of the environment, development

and transport committee, and should be made aware of our views on all roads.

Louise Hepburn from the EDP is also hoping to attend, please support this meeting.

    SPEEDWATCH VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

Many people are worried about the speed of traffic through the village. This is how to

    do something about it.

If we can get six or more volunteers prepared to spend at least one hour per week

checking speeds in the parts of the village where there's a 30mph restriction, the

police will equip and train them for free.

Volunteers cannot check speeds outside the 30 mph area. They will work in pairs or

threes, recording speeds and details of the traffic.

If you want to know more please contact Nell Steele, 01553 840 814.

The village hall trustees wish to recruit new trustees working on a voluntary basis

and invite and welcome any resident who wishes to help in running the village hall's

affairs, working with the current chairperson and treasurer to maintain and oversee

the smooth running of this important village asset.

We have at this present time six serving trustees of advanced years and urgently

need new blood to run the not too onerous tasks that keep the hall alive and

    prospering.

In the past seven years we have successfully improved and enhanced several

facilities at the hall and have encouraged and welcomed new clubs and users to the

    hall.

With so many other facilities changing or closing down we are proud of what we have

    achieved during that time.

However with the march of Old Father Time we do need to hand the baton on to a

    younger generation.

So please if you can spare some of your time, everyone's most precious commodity,

please contact me on 01553 841309 to talk about our requirements.

    GAYTON THORPE NEWS

    New Service update

The new Celtic Style service held in January proved very popular. It was so lovely to see so many people! I didn't know quite what to expect from the service, having never been to a Celtic service before. It's definitely worth giving it a try. It was a lovely, gentle, peaceful service and is well suited to the simplicity of our beautiful church.

Our next Celtic service is on the 22nd March and we always have refreshments afterwards, for those who would like to stay and chat.

    Easter service

We will be having our usual Easter Service with Easter Egg hunt on Saturday 4th April at 3pm. This will be a short child friendly service followed by an Easter Egg hunt outside for the children while the adults can enjoy cake and a cuppa! Come along and have some early Easter fun!

We will be holding our annual church council meeting on the 9th April, at 7pm in the church at Gayton Thorpe.

This meeting is the one where we review the activities of the previous year including services, fundraising, the state of the church building, the church finances etc. We also review future and current plans.

We have decided to hold it in the church this year, so that anyone who is interested in how the church functions on a day to day basis can come along and listen to what goes on.

After the meeting we will have an "open forum" so that if anyone has any questions about what has been discussed at the meeting, or about the church generally they can voice them and hopefully have them answered!

There is a lot of misunderstanding about how the church runs and is funded and so it would be a good opportunity to share information and understanding with anyone who is interested.

    Walking paths

The West Acre Estate have produced a definitive map of all the paths which can be walked around the estate, including Gayton Thorpe. These are permissive pathways and, in some cases, along field boundaries. I will place some copies on the table near the door of the church. If you are an avid walker with or without dogs, please pop in and take a copy - you may find some places to walk that you weren't aware of.

There are many conservation schemes in place across all farms on the Estate, which are left untouched to encourage wildlife, beneficial insects and small mammals. We would ask that you kindly do not walk on these areas, as there are plenty of other beautiful areas to walk. If you stick to the paths marked on the map, you can't go wrong! "

    QEH MATTERS

At the time of writing this article, work was due to start to improve pedestrian access

at the main entrance. The work includes a new walkway onto the site, widening the

existing pavements, and replacing the paving at each entrance to meet the needs of

disabled visitors. Work has also started to expand and modernise the children's

treatment and waiting area in the emergency department.

After introducing bottled water as part of infection control, it has been decided to

distribute it to every ward following positive feedback from staff and patients. Patients

say that the water seems fresher from the bottle than in a jug as it is self contained. It

is also easier to drink and less likely to be spilt. Staff have found that it is easier to

monitor water intake and is more efficient, saving time cleaning, refilling and

redistributing jugs. Patients drink more water, keeping better hydrated and this aids

their recovery. This initiative continues to play a key role in improving safety and

decreasing the chance of norovirus spreading on wards. The public are also asked to

help by not bringing their own bottled water or food for patients. Viruses like

norovirus do not start in the hospital; they are brought in. By eliminating the risk of

outside germs entering the hospital, they reduce the risk of such viruses spreading

    within.
