THE BETH SHALOM HAKOL IS
PUBLISHED TWELVE TIMES A YEAR
FEBRUARY 2014
There’s good news and then there’s REALLY good news. During the last week of December 2013, the Beth Shalom Board of Directors and Cantor Sam Greenbaum signed an agreement to continue his employment as Cantor Emeritus for 2014. During this time frame, Cantor Sam will function in all those capacities he has afforded to our Beth Shalom community in the past. In a proclamation sent for our Chai Life celebration honoring Cantor Sam and Mona for 40 years of service with us, Rep. Gary Peters said, “From his mastery of the liturgy at religious services to his lessons as a teacher of Jewish education for members at all periods of their lives, Cantor Greenbaum has approached his work with a thoughtful balance of compassion, levity, and pastoral care that has enabled him to effectively guide members of his congregation on their lifelong journey in establishing a deep and meaningful connection with their faith.”
The congregation is delighted to continue this relationship and may we together go from strength to strength.

BARUCH DAYAN EMET
Our congregation acknowledges with extreme sadness the sudden passing of Art Langer z”l. Art’s untimely death occurred on January 6 in Arizona at the age of 71. He and Gail were married for 28 years. Art is survived by his children, Robin (Christian) Goerrissen, Randee (Michael) Black and Debby (David) Schilling and grandchildren Marlie Fishlowitz, Julie Klein, Jacob Black, Kayla, McKenna and Nicholas Schilling.
Art was President of Beth Shalom from 1995-1997 and continued to serve on the Board of Directors as a Past President. He was also past president of MSU Hillel. As a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, Art was extremely generous to the congregation, both financially and with his time, as he chaired and served on numerous committees over the years. Art was also the co-owner of Medical Weight Loss Clinics.
Art’s presence in our congregation will be greatly missed and we extend our deepest sympathies to the Langer family. May his memory continue to be for a blessing.

This year, February 1st also marks the 1st day of the Hebrew month of Adar. Adar is the month in which we celebrate Purim with the festive reading of the Megillah, wearing of costumes by children and adults, a Purim carnival, a festive meal and Purim shpiel. The Babylonian Talmud tells us that when the month of Adar comes in, our joy increases (Taanit 29a). Yet we do not always hold these celebrations on the 14th of Adar – the date for Purim. Instead, as is the case this year, we sometimes celebrate Purim a month later in the month known as “Adar Sheini” or 2 Adar. This happens 7 times in a 19-year cycle. The reason is that in Judaism we observe a modified form of the lunar calendar.
In late antiquity the Hebrew months were proclaimed by witnesses testifying before the Sanhedrin, the great court that originally sat in the Temple. Early on, the Sages recognized the need to add an additional month to the year so that the spring/summer holidays (Passover and Shavuot) would stay in the spring and that the fall holidays (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot) would stay in the fall. This recognition came from the fact that the lunar calendar is roughly 354 ¼ days long versus the Solar calendar’s 365. Originally, the Sanhedrin might declare the need for a second Adar even after people had celebrated Purim. Eventually, the system was modified by Hillel II, who became the head of the community in Israel around the year 320 C.E. The system was then codified and we had the intercalation of the lunar calendar.
In this system, still in use today, we add a leap month seven times in a 19-year cycle. The years are fixed as years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17 and 19. The year 5774, the current Hebrew calendar year, is year 17 in the 19-year lunar cycle and has 385 days – the longest year possible in the Jewish calendar.
The result of the leap year is that we celebrate Purim one month later on 2 Adar 14. This year that falls on Saturday night, March 15, and Sunday, March 16. While Purim may be a month later, we should still find ways to increase our joy in 1 Adar, beginning on February 1st. Happy Adar!

RABBI’S LUNCH & LEARN
4
From the President … Marie Slotnick
During the month of February, our Torah readings come from the closing chapters of the Book of Exodus. We learn about the requirements for building the Mishkan (the Tabernacle), the establishment of a priesthood through Aaron and his sons, the receiving of the Ten Commandments, and contributions made by the people to furnish and adorn the Tabernacle. As he has been since the beginning of Exodus, Moses continues to be a central figure in this narrative. On the secular side, in February we take note of (“celebrate” may be too strong a word unless you’re a letter carrier) the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. As has been pointed out before, there are several parallels between these figures.
From Moses the prophet and visionary, Washington and Lincoln learned a similar sense of purpose leading to the deliverance of a people from tyranny and slavery as they earned their distinctions respectively as “America’s Great Liberator” and “America’s Great Emancipator.” Each of these men faced daunting tasks, utterly overwhelming at times, yet each turned to God for support and guidance and continued on out of a tenacious sense of responsibility to the greater good. To this day, these men are considered exemplar leaders.
So as we eat our cherry pie and dust off our stove pipe hats on the appointed days, let’s remember that the legacy of these presidents, at least in part, harkens back to Moses, our exceptional leader. And now, because you were waiting for it, here are two Presidents’ Day jokes: A teacher asked Jake, “Do you know Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address?” “No, I thought he lived somewhere in Washington, D. C.”
How did George Washington speak to his troops?
In general terms.
(Feel free to fire me if this was just too much to bear.) The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
Director: Ernest Lubisch Cast includes James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut, Felix Bressart, Sara Haden, William Tracy.
The ultimate in sheer charm, a graceful period comedy about co-workers in a Budapest notions shop who don’t realize that they are lonely hearts pen pals. There are also twisted intrigues by other staff members. Superbly scripted by Samson Raphaelson. (96 minutes, black and white)
Please join us to help make the minyan at 5:00 p.m. and stay for the movie. You’ll have an opportunity to order dinner (self-funded). Popcorn and beverages will be provided.

Author Deby Eisenberg to speak
at Sisterhood Event February 24
Congregation Beth Shalom’s Sisterhood will host author Deby Eisenberg at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 24.
Eisenberg wrote Pictures of the Past, a compelling saga sweeping through Chicago, Paris and Berlin, reliving events from pre-
World War II Europe, but beginning in contemporary times. As the leader of an established Chicago area Book Club, Eisenberg challenged herself to write a novel that her avid readers could not put down and would love to discuss.
With a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, she is a former English teacher and journalist. Inspired by so many wonderful books and formidable authors, and drawing on her love of literary research, art, architecture, Jewish history, and travel in the United States and Europe, Eisenberg tried to envision a multi-generational love story that would inform as well as entertain, that would broaden the mind and open the heart.
Eisenberg and her husband, Michael live in Riverwoods, Illinois. They have three grown children and two grandchildren.
Refreshments will follow the talk.
The donation requested for the event is $5 in advance and $6 at the door. To make a reservation, contact Susan Friedman at 248.358.0137 or Phyllis Weeks at [email protected].

February Fun
With all of the snow and cold weather we have been experiencing, it’s hard to get excited about another winter month! And yet, I am excited by the events that Sisterhood is planning for the next couple of months! Last month was Sisterhood Shabbat. Kol HaKavod to Bobbie Lewis! She was innovative and creative with the service, which made it interesting as well as spiritual for all of us who attended. Thank you to all of the members who participated and contributed to this special Shabbat. A special thank you to Sandra Lerner, Nicole Rothenberg and Kim Bernzweig who are responsible for the mouthwatering Kiddush lunch that followed our services!
This month should also be interesting and fun! I invite you to attend our February 3rd event at 7:00 p.m. when we will join Coffee and Crafts to work on our handicraft project. Anne Greenstein, chair of our Handicraft SIG, is hopeful that we will be able to knit and/or crochet hats and scarves to give to those less fortunate than us. This is a year-long project so if you can’t come on the 3rd, but would like to participate, please contact Anne.
On February 24th at 7:00 p.m. we will welcome Deby Eisenberg, author of Pictures of the Past. This is our opportunity to see where history imitates fiction and fiction imitates history. Deby, who is a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Chicago, has written a compelling story about a piece of art stolen during WWII that ends up in the Chicago Institute of Arts. See the article on page 4 of this issue. For questions or to RSVP, contact Susan Friedman or Phyllis Weeks.
Speaking of WWII, on March 30th we will gather at the shul for brunch and to watch the movie, THE LAST HOPE: The Story of the Shanghai Ghetto. We will have the opportunity to listen first-hand to a survivor who lived in Shanghai. Look for the flyer that will be coming in the mail. For additional information, contact Phyllis Weeks at 248.470.4157 or [email protected].
I hope that you stay warm. I look forward to seeing you at our events. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions or comments.

Sisterhood’s Craft Project 2014
For this year’s Sisterhood craft project we will be making scarves and hats to donate to the homeless. On Monday, February 3, during Coffee and Crafts (7:00-9:00 p.m.) I will bring two samples of hats with patterns; one for circular needles and one for straight needles. I will also bring a crochet hat pattern. Vicki Salinger will bring a crocheted hat that she made from the pattern. We will be using neutral-colored worsted-weight yarn, which may be purchased at Coffee and Crafts at $4 a skein for all of the hats and scarves. If you wish to make a knitted hat, please bring size 8 needles (either straight or circular, depending on your preference). If you are a very tight knitter, you may wish to get size 9 needles. For the scarf, please bring size 9 needles. If you wish to make a crocheted hat, bring size H
and/or I crochet hook. While I will be presenting this project at the meeting, it is not
obligatory for people to participate in this project. If you don’t wish to participate, then bring your own craft to do that day. Beginners are welcome! Vicki and I will be glad to help people with this project. Please contact me by phone or e-mail to let me know you are coming.

I am proud to report that Beth Shalom hosted a very successful Shelter Week, Dec. 22-29, providing a warm, caring, and welcoming atmosphere to people who are experiencing so much difficulty in their lives. We had a total of 28 men and women and four children from South Oakland Shelter staying with us. Shelter Week ran very smoothly due to ALL of nearly 300 PHENOMENAL volunteers who gave their time and effort to make it a success.
First off, I could not have gotten anything accomplished without the help of my husband, Rob Grodin. Thanks to Rob for being my constant support, both at the synagogue and at home. Second, I would like to thank Cookie Chimoff for her expertise in the kitchen, assisting with meal planning and cooking. I truly could not have gotten by without her, along with the watchful eye of her mom, Shirley Bloom. Mattress Schleppers
Thanks also to Don Eizen, Jeff Salz, Ari Chesterman, David Rodgers, Aaron and Glen Pickover, who helped schlep mattresses and set them in classrooms and the youth lounge. A huge thank you for the Gan/Religious School parents, who helped to make the schlepping so much easier.

We are concluding year three of our 3-year CSI 2 (Congregational School Improvement Initiative) process. Its purposes are: 1. To enable the congregation to re-
examine its education program, looking
at big-picture items in the school. These items may consist of such topics as: * What should the school be teaching in the 21st century? * Is our current school program model (i.e., hours, type of instruction, staffing, content focus, involvement of the clergy, connection-building between the students and the synagogue) working?
* Is our instruction really reaching the students?
* What additional help might our teachers need in being successful?
2. To encourage a “systematic” process that promotes school improvement in all areas that have a significant impact upon student learning. The major areas are: * instruction
* involvement in the school among all stakeholders (professionals, Board of Directors members, School Board members, parents, teachers, general synagogue members, and students.) * The school’s curriculum
* leadership
* The physical learning environment
We have high ambitions and high expectations and are excited to start implementing some of the recommendations for the Hebrew reading/Tefillah curriculum. We learn in Parashat Terumah that we are to “Cover it (the Ark) with pure gold from the inside and outside.” (Ex. 25:11) Raba took this as a metaphor for human behavior, saying, “Any scholar whose inside is not like his outside is no scholar” (Yoma 72b).
As we initiate the changes, we will continue to focus on our 2013-2014 school theme of Derech Eretz. We want our students to acquire skills and become lifelong learners, and we want them to be mensches!

Potty training your child with an app! Now I have heard of everything. You can reward your child after each bathroom visit by holding out the “I Went Potty” button. There are many other features in this app. By now you have either stopped reading this, are rolling on the floor laughing or strongly considering downloading the app. Wherever you are in your child’s stage of life, this app may or may not be useful to you.

The Gan Shalom PTA would like to send a great big thank you to everyone who has participated in our fundraisers for The Gan. Our cell phone collection is completed, but there are still other fundraisers in which you can participate. If you have a Kroger card, you can link it to The Gan. It doesn't cost you any extra and it’s easy to do. The Gan is part of a co-op with Door to Door Organics. Each week organic produce is delivered on Wednesdays before noon. If you would like to buy your produce in a way that helps to raise money for The Gan, please consider joining our co-op. Information on both of these fundraising efforts can be found on the CBS website under the donations tab. Finally, The Gan PTA will be running a mom-to-mom sale on March 23rd in the shul. If you are able to volunteer or would like to rent a table for the day, please contact the PTA at [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who has helped out. So far this school year, we have used fundraising dollars to buy new bikes for The Gan, to go on a Chanukah field trip, to have a Chanukah celebration, to have a ladies' night at Painting with a Twist, and to have an awesome night at our Camp-ish. It’s been a great year so far. Please consider supporting our future goals!
