PROGRAM
Bob Freelen introduced today’s speaker,
Dale Knight, whose topic was End Polio
Now. She had a friend as a child who
contracted polio at age 7, which greatly
affected her. In 1969, she was in the Peace
Corps in Somalia and saw children crippled
with polio crawling through the roads
wearing rubber flip flops on their hands and
knees. Rotary first got involved treating
polio in 1922. In 1985, there were 350,000
new cases of polio. This year-to-date, the
number is 6, all in Afghanistan and
Pakistan. Rotary partners in the fight
against polio include the Gates Foundation, Unicef, WHO, and the CDC. The Gates Foundation
matches every $1 we raise with $2.
Dr Dave then joined the presentation. He mentioned
that during the 1950’s, polio was on the rise. Only 1%
of those infected with the polio virus have severe
symptoms. 19% of the 1% develop paralysis of the
diaphragm. Jonas Salk developed the first polio
vaccine. He didn’t patent it, as he wanted to make it
available to the rest of the world. Sabin developed the
oral vaccine. Our Rotary Club has raised $10-13 K
every year for Polio Plus, which amounts to over $200
K, once its matched.
RAFFLE: Max Dunn had the winning ticket, but not
the winning marble. He did receive a lovely bottle of
Bertapelle wine!
CLOSING: Prez John thanked visitors and guests for coming, and rang the bell.
NEXT MEETING: Speaker Ted Calvert "Fitch Mtn and Beyond"
