Monsignor buchignani appointed state chaplain
Monsignor Peter P. Buchignani, Council 9317 Cordova, Tennessee was
named State Chaplain on July 1, 2019, by State Deputy Michael McCusker.
Monsignor was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 3, 1940. He spent his
childhood attending school at Sacred Heart and St. Michael’s before enrolling in
Christian Brothers High School (Class of ’58). In the fall of 1958, he entered St.
Mary Seminary in St. Mary, Kentucky, subsequently transferring to the North
American College in Rome. Ordained December 18, 1965 in St. Peter’s Basilica
in what was known as the “Council Class” due to their studies in Rome during
the Second Vatican Council.
Initially, Monsignor served in the Diocese of Nashville until Pope Paul VI estab-
lished the Diocese of Memphis on January 6, 1971. During his ministry, Monsignor has been assigned to the
following Memphis area parishes: Sacred Heart, Holy Rosary & St. Joseph (as Associate Pastor) and Incarnation,
Sacred Heart, Resurrection, and St. Francis Assisi (as Pastor). From 1971-73, Monsignor returned to Rome for
graduate studies in Canon Law, returning to Memphis to establish the Diocesan Tribunal whereupon he was
named the Chancellor for the Diocese of Memphis. In September 1987, Saint Pope John Paul II named him a
Monsignor, and then in 2009, Pope Benedict XVI named him Protonotary Apostolic. From 2000-2016, he served
as the Vicar General for the Diocese of Memphis. From 1974-2016, Monsignor served as a member and then
President of the Priests Council & College Consultors. In August 2016, upon the retirement of Bishop J. Terry
Steib, he was elected Administrator of the Diocese until the new Bishop was installed. He has often been a
close advisor and confidant to Diocese of Memphis Bishops Dozier, Stafford, Buechlein and Steib. He entered
full retirement in November 2016. Most importantly, Monsignor is an excellent, avid golfer!

Recently, on the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we heard once again the
Parable of the Prodigal Son. That morning, at Holy Rosary in Memphis,
Father Michael posed the question, “Who is the older brother?” and that
question has remained on my mind, especially during the recent difficult
days our Church has encountered.
At St. Francis in Cordova, the following Sunday, I noticed
that we could have squeezed the congregation together
and not fill up half the church. Not long ago, we lined up
chairs in the narthex to accommodate an overflow crowd.
Are these absent Catholics the older brother we hear of
in the parable; incapable of accepting the repentant
heart of the Church…preferring instead to abandon the
faith rather than working to restore it? Conversely, are
we the older brother; judging those who have left, hold-
ing them in disdain and failing to understand their sense of grief? In Buoninsegna’s Christ
Taken Prisoner, we see Christ being carried away as his apostles abandon him. How did Jesus
treat them when he saw them again? Disdain? Judgment? No. Instead, He told them
“Peace be with you.” And then He breathed on them, giving them the power to forgive
men’s sins. Those who know me know that I often tell Brother
Knights that our task is to find those men among us who embrace
the faith but choose to endure the trials of life in solitude; much
like Thomas chose to go it alone following the Crucifixion. How-
ever, I also remind them that it was to the assembled Church that
Christ presented himself following the Resurrection. As we move
through October, let’s focus our membership efforts toward the
Thomases among us while also living our lives of Faith in Action in
such a way as to draw those who have abandoned Christ and His
Church in these trying times. Let us never forget that even though
the apostles abandoned Christ, He forgave them and gave them the strength of the Holy
Spirit to direct their steps as they endeavored to build His Church on earth! Just imagine the
great works yet to be done by those among us who, for a moment, are acting like the
apostles of old. VIVAT JESUS!

Members of Father John A. Nolan Council 3537 in Clarksville responded to the request of Brother Knight
Bob Garretson to break down the handicap access ramp at his home and rebuild it at the home of a local woman in
need. Council members originally built the ramp for Garretson’s wife, Valerie, who recently passed away.
Bishop David R. Choby Council 10010 in Gallatin sponsored a food drive for local children who often go
hungry during the summer because they can’t receive free meals at school. Members gave bags to more than 60
children attending a free summer camp run by Shalom Zone, a nonprofit serving the poorest neighborhoods of the
city. After the children decorated their bags, members collected and distributed them to parishioners at St. John
Vianney Parish. At the end of camp, the children received their bags again, now filled with about 30 pounds of
nonperishable food.

Faith in Action Info from Your State Program Director
This monthly note will hopefully help you gauge your councils’ progress and help keep you on track for the
year. We are beginning the 2nd quarter of the fraternal year. By now, each council should have elected
officers, appointed committee directors and chairs and planned their year. A quarterly meeting with your
pastor is a must and not only helps you understand his needs, it opens a strong communication link between
the council and clergy of your parish. Every Grand Knight and his directors should also have a copy of a Faith
in Action Guidebook – available from Supplies Online in Officers online on Supreme website. There are
various guidebooks available with varying levels of detail, both down-loadable and in print form.
Remember, a well-rounded slate of programs contributes to both the retention and growth of
membership. It is the best recruiting tool you have available. Make your council enticing to the men and
families of your parish.
There are four categories in the program, FAITH, COMMUNITY, FAMILY, LIFE. To qualify for the Columbian
Award, there are “Required” programs (one from each category). These must be done. Then there are
“Featured” programs from each category. When these are done, they typically count for multiple credits
towards the Columbian Award. There are 32 Supreme programs, but there are also activities that councils
already do that fit one or more of the four categories of the Faith in Action Program. Make your program fit
your council and your parish. Do the things that your members need and want to do. Make it your program.
Each month we will explore a different category leading up to the award applications and qualifying for
the coveted STAR COUNCIL Award. All state officers and staff are ready to help your council succeed. If you
have any questions, please contact your District Deputy or any of the state staff. We will be there for you
and to answer your questions to help you succeed and Be recognized as the STAR COUNCIL that you are.
STATE NEWSLETTER 2nd EDITION October 2019
I often ponder what we all have in common. We are all men, we are all
practical Catholics, all men on the same journey. We share some other things;
we are all sons, many of us are husbands, fathers, uncles, and some of us are grandfathers. Some
of us are Priests, Deacons, or in formation to Holy Orders. Some of us are Veterans, a title earned
by service, not given.
What are we? We are Knights of Columbus; we earned the title. We serve our church, our
families, our communities. We serve the needy, we bring comfort to the homebound, we serve
in ministries in our Parish community; the list goes on. What are we? We are on a journey to
get to heaven. What are we doing to complete this journey? We have our good works, Charity,
we have our Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. We have our Faith.
A good friend, “Monsignor Thoni” a veteran, would often ask anyone he met, “what church
do you go to”? Monsignor always knew that the person was missing something. Many times,
the answer was, I’m Catholic but I don’t attend Mass anymore. Monsignor response was always,
“once a Catholic always a Catholic” and invite them to come visit him at the rectory or to Mass.
How often do we challenge ourselves to ask someone to come back to the church? There are
more non-practicing Catholics than practicing. But what are we? We are Knights of Columbus.
We are Catholic men bound by our faith, and we have a responsibility. We made the promise
when we took our Admission Degree. We promised to bond by Charity and our Faith. All the
pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, and fish fries will not get us to heaven. We need
something else that is found in our faith. We are men of prayer and service to God. The readings
these past weeks speak to service to our fellow man. Lazarus and the great chasm between him
and the rich man, or the Samaritan and the traveler on the side of the road. How do we serve
God? I always ask my brother Knights, have you asked that good Catholic man sitting next to you
if he would join our order? I ask this because we have something special to offer. Why are we
not offering these good Catholic men the opportunity to share in something someone asked us
to share in? We have a responsibility to ask these men to join our Order. We have a
responsibility help all to grow in their faith, and we have a responsibility to pray together. We
are anchored in our faith. We are Knights of Columbus, we are Catholic men, we are men of
faith, we pray, and we are on a journey to get to heaven. Let us do all we can to encourage
others to be a part of our journey. Lastly, my father’s message to me when I became father,
“make a difference” - do good to others. God Bless Us All. Vivat Jesus!
WHO ARE WE? WHAT ARE WE CALLED TO DO FOR GOD?

Brothers all:
As we enter the second quarter of
our fraternal year, a peek at mem-
bership numbers versus the other
jurisdictions in North America
shows us at #5. Overall, we are #9 of 75 total. We
have brought in 117 new members to the order in
Tennessee, so far. Those are optimistic numbers, and
we should be happy to be so close to the top.
However, if we look deeper into our progress, we are
a bit behind where we ought to be to achieve true
success this year. The good news: it’s still early; we
have 9 more months to help many Catholic men
become a part of what we already know to be a life-
giving ministry. We can’t ease up, though, we need to
be creative in making sure everyone in our parish
knows who we are and what we stand for. Schedule
those Faith in Action events and invite the parish to
assist and participate.
Allow me to recognize those District Deputies which
have earned kudos by accepting our Worthy State
Deputy’s challenge to find 5 new Catholic men to join
with us each month beginning in August: In the top
spot, Carlos Olivarez, DD #12 with 13 new members!
Also achieving their goal are Mike Esposito, DD # 3
(11), Jim Stanhope, DD # 6 (11), and “Tex” Shelhart, D
# 11 (10). Honorable mention goes to Dave Johnson,
DD # 9, whose councils brought in 7 new members, all
this month! Thanks to all the councils in these districts
and across the state who are working to keep the
Knights of Columbus alive and growing in Tennessee!

Catholic history: First Deputy
Tennessee’s first State Deputy Supreme Knight, Ferdinand Emery
Kuhn, was known as the “Father of Knights of Columbus in the South.”
Born September 3, 1861 in Nashville, he was the son of Ferdinand &
Barbara (Müller) Kuhn – both German immigrants. Ferdinand, known as
F.E. was the youngest of eight children and attended Hume High School
in Nashville before attending the University of Notre Dame (Class of
1885) where he was recognized as the best science student on campus.
He married Kate Wall on April 15, 1885. The Kuhns had nine children,
including Oliver “Doc” Kuhn, a prominent athlete and quarterback for
Vanderbilt University. Kuhn joined the Knights of Columbus at Louisville,
Kentucky on July 1, 1899. Returning to Nashville, he was appointed
Territorial Deputy by Supreme Knight Edward L. Hearn and immediately
began working to form a Tennessee State Council, which would be
establish on January 8, 1903. He would serve as the first State Deputy
from 1902-1908. Kuhn founded Council 544 (Nashville), 610
(Chattanooga), 616 (Memphis) and 645 (Knoxville). He also worked to
establish State Councils in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, and
Mississippi. Kuhn also served as Grand Knight of Council 544.
F.E. Kuhn died in Nashville on March 17, 1930. His State Deputy
Sword has been passed from State Deputy to State Deputy since 1908
and is used to dub new Third-Degree Knights.
