Editor’s letter...

The nights are starting to close in as we prepare for Autumn and once again, we benefit from the glorious colours this time of year brings (apparently this is a sign of me getting old!).

Maybe it is, but I love walking Digger (our Border Terrier) in the woods and seeing the changes Autumn brings!

I am sure there is lots happening in Walton in the run up to Christmas, if you would like to share your community event, please e mail me the information before the deadline below. Remember, The Walton Arrow is delivered to 3000 homes in Walton bi monthly and alternates with the Sandal Arrow.

Last but not least, well done to last month’s Doncaster Racecourse St Leger Winners who won County Enclosure tickets for opening day, Jonathon Hall from Haxey and Joe Williams from Auckley. I hope you had a lucky day!

The deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 22nd October.

Best Wishes

Michelle Sidebottom

Sandal Community Association is going ahead with the now traditional Christmas tree on Barnsley Road but this year it will have to meet the full cost of £1,600. If you can help defray this with a donation, please get in touch with SCA treasurer Phil Carter at 35 Marriott Grove (tel: 01924 254659). The lights switch-on and social is being planned for Friday, November 28. And make a date in your diary for December 12 when Horbury Youth Brass Band will be playing at the SCA’s Christmas mince pies party at West Yorkshire Sports and Social Club off Walton Lane; 7pm for a 7.30pm start. The Association’s best ever pre-loved handbag auction at Sandal Rugby Club in September raised nearly £3,500 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance. BBC Look North presenter Amy Garcia, who was brought up in Sandal and went to Kettlethorpe High School, set the ball rolling by auctioning the first handbag. The YAA's West Yorkshire fundraiser Kerry Garner emphasised how important events such as this were because it took £10,000 a day to keep the service's two helicopters in the air. Association chairman Les Goddard summed it up later: “Well done to all involved. It’s a great result.” Before bidding started, auctioneer Ian Flint thanked all those who had helped make the event such a success - Barclays Bank for agreeing to match fund whatever was raised on the night up to £1,000, Fujitsu for giving £500, Peter Jones China for donating traded-in handbags and for giving a new Radley bag as a raffle prize, singer Jane Macdonald for giving some of her costume jewellery for sale, Harratts for a raffle prize of a free weekend's use of one of their top model Volvos and the Rugby Club for allowing free use of their premises. SCA secretary Madge Flint said: "The people of Wakefield and especially Sandal gave us a very proud night. The evening was fast, furious and much fun.”

BBC Look North presenter, Amy Garcia asks for bids on the first handbag, watched by auc oneer Ian Flint, his assistant John Coney, and Jill Coney.

We did it! David Chorlton and I completed the Great North Run for Charity in September. We raised nearly £450 for Cancer Research UK and £300 for Sheffield Hospitals.

Thank you to everyone who supported us and to our respective other halves for team support on the day! It was a great experience (but I am not doing it again!)

There, it’s in black and white :)
