Good afternoon Wanguri community

Camps

A big welcome back to our Year 6 students from Canberra and to our Year 4 and 5 students from Batchelor. My conversations with the students clearly indicates what a wonderful time they had.

I went to the Batchelor camp for a day and was so impressed with the facilities and the activities that were provided. Canoeing, kayaking, damper making, low ropes, etc…what more could children ask for? The behaviour of the students was exemplary!

A very big thank you to the teachers, Mrs Fraser, Mrs Dobrini, Mr Glover, Ms Webb, Ms Reyneke and Mr Robinson, as well as fantastic parent helpers, for giving up their personal time to facilitate the camps. It is greatly appreciated by the school community.

Parent information session

A parent/community information is being held on Wednesday 27 August from 6 - 8.30pm at Darwin High school around the topic of school autonomy. As you may be aware, this new phase in education is due to be rolled out in 2015, giving schools and communities more power regarding decisions around finances and resourcing.

Flexi Schools

Our online canteen ordering system has taken off with a flying start with many parents commenting how convenient it is. I encourage you to join up to Flexischools if you haven’t already. We will be gradually phasing out over the counter orders so if you need any assistance setting up please contact Liz in the canteen or one of our office staff.

Safety on Wanguri Terrace

A reminder to please be mindful of our students when driving in our school zone. There is a 40 kph speed zone on all the streets surrounding our school and this is patrolled regularly by the police. Many of our students walk home without supervision and as we know not all children have ‘road awareness’ especially when talking to friends. Please ensure you stay within the speed restrictions and watch out for students crossing the road.

Next Wednesday night there will be a discussion at the School Council meeting around having a ‘lollipop person’ to man the crossing on Wanguri Terrace. Please feel free to come along and join in the discussion.

Stranger Danger

I would like to remind parents to have a talk to their children about Stranger Danger. With our busy lives we sometimes forget to reinforce to our children that they should not talk to strangers or ever go with a stranger.

There are a lot of extra people in Darwin in the Dry season so it is a good time to sit down with your children and remind them of the four 'R's:

Recognise the danger Refuse any offer Run away Report it to the first person they feel safe with.

Unwanted Books

This term some classes will be setting up their students with their own personal book boxes. This will allow students to select their own books to create their own reading box for reading times. If you have any unwanted books, fiction or non-fiction, comics, magazines, etc that are appropriate for school aged students and in good condition could you please bring them in to the front office. Thank you for your support with this initiative.

ENVIRO WEEK

August 24 to August 30 is Enviro Week. It’s a time for everyone to celebrate caring for our Earth and everything that lives on it. You can check out Wanguri’s profile page on the Enviro website at:

http://www.enviroweek.org/teams/sustainability-ambassadors/

Wanguri Primary School will be celebrating the week by offering fun environmental activities in our school garden on Tuesday and Wednesday at lunchtime. The Sustainability Ambassadors will be giving tours of the garden, there will be a colouring competition, and students can help make posters. They can come and add their green thumbprint to our canvas and hang a wish for the Earth on our Nature Tree. The Sustainability Ambassadors will also be selling packets of Snake Bean Seeds from our garden for 50 cents a packet.

So come to the school garden next Tuesday and Wednesday at lunchtime to have some fun and help celebrate our Earth.

And as always, remember to save power by the hour!

WOW, almost half way through Term 3 already. Where does the time go? Before we know it, a lot of us will be packing up houses and moving on.

DCO are offering several workshops to help Defence families and individuals become more resilient and manage times of change particularly during challenging times such as absence from home, deployments and moving house and schools.

The programs are called FAMILYSMART, TEENSMART and KIDSMART. These are workshops delivered by DCO staff and are tailored for families and partners, teenagers and younger children.

These workshops can be completed by face-to-face workshops or if life is too busy to be able to attend these workshops, DCO also offers online workshops.

To register for attending a workshop, please call 1800 624 608 or if you are interested in completing an online workshop, please visit www.defence.gov.au/dco

News from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports DeskNews from the Sports Desk Congratulations to Kurt Parriman who has returned from the Australian School Sport Rugby Championships.

Here is Kurt’s report:

I went to Wollongong in NSW to play rugby in the Australian School Championships. We had a 2 day training camp in Darwin and then did activities like Zone 3 and swimming. We played in Wollongong for 5 days, after flying from Darwin to Sydney and then took a bus to our accommodation. We won 2 games and I played mostly 2nd row and prop. I have improved my tackling and running the ball more often. It has motivated me to become a professional rugby player when I am older.

DID you know ?

PARSLEY and MINT

• Parsley is the most commonly consumed fresh herb because it can be grown in most climates. • Parsley is a soft herb so is best added at the end of cooking to preserve its flavour. • Parsley can only be used in savoury dishes because it has a strong flavor. • Garlic and lemon are great accompaniments to parsley. • The ancient Romans believed that eating mint would increase your intelligence. • Some people chew mint leaves because they believe it can reduce tummy upsets. • Mint works brilliantly in desserts and fruity, summer drinks. • Mint leaves or oil deter ants so put some fresh leaves in your cupboards for a natural solution. • Mint is one of the few herbs that can stand up against chillies and other spices.

TRY this minty yoghurt dip from Jamie Oliver: Ingredients: 4 sprigs of mint, one lemon, one quarter of one garlic clove, 200g plain yoghurt, veggie sticks Method:

1. Pick and finely chop mint leaves 2. Finely grate the zest of half a lemon, then cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a mixing bowl 3. On a board, peel and very gently chop the garlic 4. Add the yoghurt and a tiny pinch of salt and pepper to the mixing bowl with the chopped mint and garlic. Stir well 5. Serve with a platter of veggies for dipping such as tiny tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks, crisp lettuce cups, capsicum

and zucchini lengths.

Healthy Living Competition

Congratulations to the Higgins family (Travis and Jocelyn) and the Shoemark family (Lily–Anne) for being the first two to respond to our competition last week. The three students chose a prize each from the suitcase of goodies and there were a lot of envious friends, so……… read the newsletter, answer the Healthy Living Question and win a prize!

How to be the first to answer to win a prize: two prizes per newsletter - one to the first family to respond via email and the other one to the first student to answer face to face. Plenty of prizes to choose from so think quick!

Responses emailed to [email protected] or face to face with Mrs Goodman on Thursday mornings.

Question for this week:

• Parsley can be used as a natural breath freshener – TRUE or FALSE?
