This Week’s Update Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week is a special week celebrating TWPS mums. As the school sign

says TWPS mums rock. They juggle work, family and always keen to lend a

helping hand to make our community a great place. I am really looking

forward to finding something special at the Mother’s Day stall for my mum.

Thank you to this team of amazing mums who work tirelessly to create a

great gift stall for the students. I just love watching children selecting that

special gift!

On Friday I am excited to bring my own children to the Mother’s Day

breakfast (fingers crossed they behave). I truly believe being a mum is my

hardest role yet! It is challenging, rewarding and a privilege. Wishing all our

mums an amazing day!

New Teacher

Next week we welcome Miss Rachel Hellyer

who will be taking 5A. Miss Hellyer is a

targeted graduate and we are very excited to

have her as part of the TWPS team. She is

really looking forward to starting her teacher

career at TWPS.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank

Mrs Marriott who has taught 5A this year. We

really appreciate your hard work and

dedication to making a difference.

Next week is NAPLAN for years 3 and 5. It will just be another day of

learning at TWPS. It is important that your child has a good night’s sleep and

a healthy breakfast. Please see the timetable below:

Deputy’s Message Cross Country

It was a great day yesterday with all our students enthusiastically participating in our school cross country. Thank you to Mrs Part for all the organisation, and thank you to the many parents who assisted as officials on the day. Ribbons for first three place getters in each event will be presented at the 3-6 assembly

next week.

House placings will be announced in the coming week.

The top 5 runners in each event qualify for Beecroft zone cross country on Wednesday 23 May, with 6th place as a reserve. Miss Rees is our school official, who along with a team manager will be taking students to Fagan Park for the event. Zone permission notes will be issued soon. We wish our

competitors all the best for a challenging run.

PSSA Sport stage 2 and 3

We look forward to participating in PSSA winter sport commencing this Friday. For the first time we are excited to have stage 2 students participating ion PSSA. We have 2 senior soccer teams and 2 junior teams. Mrs Part is coaching 5 and 6 netball and Mr Watkins is coaching Years 5 and 6 soccer. and Mrs Mamo is coaching Years 3 and 4 soccer. Miss Dowd is coaching stage 2 T – ball Exciting times ahead! Thank you students for your enthusiasm and team spirit. We do love our sport at Thornleigh West! Soccer players are requested to purchase the navy blue and yellow socks from the uniform shop, they will be available on Flexi-schools soon. In the meantime, any blue socks will suffice. Students participating must have returned permission notes before Friday. Good luck to our teams, we wish you all the best for a competitive season. Mothers’ Day Stall Our Mother’s Day stall is on again this year, Thursday, 10 May. Each class

will have an allocated timeslot to visit the stall for the students to purchase gifts. As well as being a fun and convenient shopping opportunity for the children, the MDFDGG (Mother’s Day Father’s Day Gift Group) have raised significant funds and provided some notable additions to school facilities over the last few years. Your support of these stalls is greatly appreciated and directly provides these improvements to school and student facilities.

Kind regards,

Julie Granville, Deputy Principal R

SPECTRA is coming to Thornleigh West!

SPECTRA Awards Program

Science Program Exciting Children Through Research Activities

SPECTRA is a national science awareness program developed and administered by the Australian Science Teachers Association for students

between Years 1 and 10.

There are two levels in the program:

Junior SPECTRA (for Years 1- 4)

SPECTRA (for Years 5 – 10)

What does the program involve?

SPECTRA offers a range of science activities to help develop your child’s scientific interest and understanding. Your child will be required to select one topic and carry out a range of practical and observational activities,

research, experiments and projects on that topic.

Once your child has completed an activity the project will be brought to school for assessment by the SPECTRA teacher during a SPECTRA Club meeting. When the required number of activities has been completed to the satisfaction of the supervising teacher your child is awarded a certificate and

a badge.

What are parents/caregivers required to do?

The SPECTRA program activities are to be conducted at home under the supervision of an adult. For this reason, signing up to the program will require a commitment from you as parent/caregiver to support your child as he/she completes the program by providing the resources needed for the various activities as well as plenty of guidance and encouragement along

the way. The actual work is to be primarily your child’s responsibility.

SPECTRA will be run as a lunchtime club by Miss Redford. The cost of the

program is $9.00. This includes the topic card, certificate and badge.

Please speak to your child to find out if they are interested in completing this program. A lunchtime meeting will be held this week for those who wish to

join.

Please find the full list of topics on the attached SPECTRA card list.

For further information about the SPECTRA program go to http://

asta.edu.au/resources/spectra

For any questions please contact Miss Redford

Opportunity Class Placement 2019

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving Year 5 and Year 6

academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at

their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented

students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students,

teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the

appropriate level.

Parents normally apply when students are in Year 4. Students who are placed

then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the pri-

mary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. In

the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will

leave their current school to attend the school with an opportunity class.

There is no provision to apply for Year 6 placement only

Ethics Classes Update

We are very pleased to say that every child at Thornleigh West who would like to learn

Ethics will be in a class by week 3 of term 2.

Ethics classes provide an opportunity for children to discuss ethical issues with their peers. Classes are inquiry based and are impartially facilitated by our trained volunteers using Department of Education approved lesson materials, which have been developed by an academic in the field of philosophical education for children and reviewed by an expert

panel for both philosophical rigour and best practice in instructional design.

Children explore a range of stories and scenarios, discussing what we ought to do, how we ought to live, the kind of society we should have and what kind of person each of us should

strive to be.

Three new teachers have recently been trained, therefore we now have a total of ten

volunteer Ethics teachers at our school.

Wednesdays at 9.30am

Pam Jaworski is teaching Kindergarten.

Michelle Masefield is teaching Kindergarten.

Kim Richards is teaching combined Year 1 & 2.

Leonie Garforth is teaching Year 1.

Steven Most is teaching Year 2.

Thursdays at 9.30am

Jacqueline McLeod is teaching Year 3.

Patty Correll is teaching combined Year 3 & 4.

Alison Sluis is teaching Year 4.

Emma Fenton is teaching Year 5.

Kirsty de Vallance is teaching Year 6.

If you would like your child to be placed in an Ethics class please let Julie Granville know in

writing.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Do something life-changing this year and become a volunteer Ethics teacher.

You’ll be rewarded with a unique learning and development opportunity while supporting

children to think logically, disagree respectfully and use evidence and reasoning to make

decisions rather than act out of habit or peer pressure. Teach ethics and you’ll be helping

children develop important skills for life.

From the Library Just a reminder, that all k-2 complete the PRC challenge in library lessons. Each term we complete a themed unit or author

study, this term kindy: Bob Graham and Stage 1 Aaron Blabey. All students can search their borrowing history now through

their portal login on the “my library Oliver link”. This is helpful for 3-6 as they can double check what they have been reading

and borrowed in loan history.
