We rely heavily on Mike Kupchanko our Golf Course Superintendent and his management as well as Greg who have the experience and expertise. They monitor what others are doing and consult with the USGA turf advisory people, whose representative will be here on August 23 rd to examine the course and review our cultural practices. Some of those practices include short- terms course disruption and we apologize for that however if we are going to improve the condition of the course there is no way of avoiding it. I can advise you that the Management Team also assesses on a regular basis whether the current practices are working and, if not, what are the alternatives. We aren’t where we want to be yet but there have been significant improvements and the Management Team is working hard to get there. On a go forward basis we will try to communicate to the Membership when work is going to be done, and also when there is a particular issue that we are addressing on the course. Occasionally, as has happened in the past couple of weeks, a combination of weather, tournament usage and machinery breakdowns have affected the condi- tion of the course. Finally, it is important as well that as Members we show respect and do what we can to help achieve the conditions that we desire at our course. Repairing divots, for example, is a simple aid. When a golfer parks a pull cart on the apron of a green, drives over a curb, removes a ball from the hole with a putter or leaves a cigarette butt lying around, it is disrespectful and affects everyone’s enjoyment of the course. This happens rarely but it is some- thing we would like to alleviate altogether. Aaron Fox, President President’s Message

August Calendar 22

July is drawing to a close and we can look back on a number of successful events, including the Taylor

Motors Tournament and the second appearance of our “Margaritaville” night of dining and dancing. August has a

number of events coming up, including live entertainment on August 9th, our Week of Champions culminating with

the family barbeque, Champions presentations and Hall of Fame induction on August 12th, the Dilawri/Keystone

Member/Guest Tournament and a number of dinner theme nights. I encourage you to participate in all of these

events.

Both the Board and management receive a number of comments throughout the year about the course and

the services we provide. These are both positive and negative and I have to admit there are times when I am not

sure that they are all talking about the same course. I want to assure the Membership that all feedback is appreciat-

ed and taken seriously by both the Board and management. Our objective is to have a pristine course and to pro-

vide excellent service, both on the course and in the Clubhouse. Getting there means making some changes, as well

as dealing with the problems that can arise suddenly throughout the year. When people have a less than satisfactory

experience, in the Spike or the dining room for example, we are concerned. There have been some issues this sum-

mer and Greg and his team are working hard to address them, both on a short-term and long-term basis.

Concerning the course itself, we have spent time assessing what can be done to improve the course bearing

in mind what we have to work with and the reasonable budget constraints we face. The bunkers needed work. It

went beyond hauling in more sand. It is an ongoing process and will have to be attended to every year if we don’t

want to digress. The greens are a bit more of a challenge. We have a number of greens that vary dramatically in

age, quality and makeup. That cannot stop us from having greens that roll consistently at an appropriate speed.

Some Members like the greens faster, some not so much, some would like them harder and, again, some not so

much. Everyone wants them to be healthy and consistent and that is the first objective.

The overall cultural practices are put together by the Management Team. We rely heavily on Mike Kupchanko our

Golf Course Superintendent and his management as well as Greg who have the experience and expertise. They

monitor what others are doing and consult with the USGA turf advisory people, whose representative will be here

on August 23rd to examine the course and review our cultural practices. Some of those practices include short-

terms course disruption and we apologize for that however if we are going to improve the condition of the course

there is no way of avoiding it. I can advise you that the Management Team also assesses on a regular basis whether

the current practices are working and, if not, what are the alternatives. We aren’t where we want to be yet but there

have been significant improvements and the Management Team is working hard to get there.

On a go forward basis we will try to communicate to the Membership when work is going to be done, and

also when there is a particular issue that we are addressing on the course. Occasionally, as has happened in the past

couple of weeks, a combination of weather, tournament usage and machinery breakdowns have affected the condi-

tion of the course.

Message from the Wascana Ladies Club President – Shirley Paterson

Hard to believe I am writing this for the August Chronicle already. The golf season so far with its

“funky” weather systems, “take away your breath” humidity and wind has got to let up sometime so

we can enjoy our beautiful course and surroundings longer.

Congratulations to:

Our 2011 Wascana Club Champion Kim Walker and Recording Secretary for the Wascana Ladies

Executive, on her big win at the 2012 Regina Ladies Open July 16 - 17. Neither rain nor wind

held back Kim with her three stroke win against very worthy opponent Saskatoon’s 2011 Regina

Open Champion Kathy Ziglo.

All the Wascana Ladies who competed in the Regina Open (see results on next page): Judy

Giblett, Helen Burgess, Virgi Punga and Anita Ford were winners in all their respective events.

What an amazing showing and group of ladies.

Wendy McCauley got a HOLE IN ONE on # 8 on July 14, 2012. Way to go Wendy!

Capsule Comments!

Wascana played host to the opening round of the Ladies Regina Open. Many thanks to Sha-

ron Nattrass, Pam Kendel-Gooddale and Ruth Lawrence who joined me at the Registration

Desk and assisted in gathering scorecards for the Committee. It should be noted that the

Wascana will be hosting the 2013 Ladies Open and our own Judy Giblett will be the Wascana

Representative for the event.

The Chick -a- Dee s are taking over the Wascana on Thursday morning, August 2, 2012. I

understand that this tournament is already filled up. However, there is a waiting list and if you

are thinking about entering please contact Marion Moffat for more information.

Wascana Club Championship Week is coming up August 6 - 12, 2012. Ladies be sure to mark

your calendars for a special event day on Tuesday, August 7. Ladies will be playing in their

regular time slots. The game that will be played is called “Mystery Partners”. Danica Love

(see Poster in this Issue) will have all the details of the day. (continued on next page…)

Message from the Wascana Ladies Club President Shirley Paterson

This will be followed by a special lunch where we will see former Wascana Club Champions

from across Canada join us for lunch and during the week of festivities. All former

Champions will be presented with a special blazer. If you are not playing golf in the morning,

you are all invited to attend the luncheon and for the Business Ladies, before your afternoon

tee times. Sign up sheets for both will be in the Section Books. If you are not in a Section

and just coming to the lunch, you can contact me at [email protected] and I would be happy

to register you.

Remember ladies you don’t have to belong to a ladies group or a section to golf at the Was-

cana any day of the week or weekend during regular golf times within your membership

class. If you see an opening, I know that you would be most welcome to join that group. It is

a great way to meet the fabulous ladies of the Wascana Country Club.

Wascana Mixed League

Wascana Mixed League “Olympics Edition” – July 19th

Wascana Mixed League participants were treated to a beautiful day for golfing for our July 19th

game.

Every hole was a new “event”, each requiring Olympic-class focus,

strength, endurance, and (let’s face it) luck. Players tried their hand at shot-

put, tennis, synchronized driving, and special Olympic events requiring

them to play with the opposite hand and blindfolded. And…we discovered

that it’s not easy to putt with a mini hockey stick!

Golfers played 9 holes, tallying their gross score and number of putts through the

round. Once back in the clubhouse, the game was revealed as a putting contest, with 1-putts being

Gold medals, 2-putts, Silver medals, and 3+ putts as Bronze medals. Participants also got points for

dressing in the colours of the country of their choice.

Points were tallied on a leader board, and the results were revealed…a 3-way

tie! It came down to a draw for first place, and the winners were: Jim and

Jeanne Baker! Brian and Carol Galon won the evening’s door prize. Each

couple will enjoy an $85 gift certificate to the Rider Store and dinner out at

Boston Pizza/Brewsters. All participating teams took home lapel pins, donated

by the Pasterfields.

We enjoyed a fine buffet meal provided by Wascana Food Services, and

socialized as we watched the Rider game on the big screens.

Four teams took home door prizes generously donated by Roger

Brandvold and Carmen Giblett: Bob & Lee Rea, Tafaline Wall & Tom

Newton, Abe & Dorothy Toews, and Bill & Marion Brown.

Wascana Mixed League plays a for-fun 9 hole game (shotgun start), on

selected Thursdays throughout the summer. If you are interested joining

us August 9th or September 13th, please email The Wascana Mixed Com-

mittee at [email protected]. Registrations are welcome from teams and singles. If you

can’t join us for golf, come on out and enjoy some good food and socializing. RSVP’s are required

by 6:00 p.m. on the Sunday prior to the game. See you at our next event…Aug 9th!

A Message from the Course & Grounds Committee

1) Greens

The condition of the greens has fluctuated this year – sometimes achieving our daily objective of 9- 9.5 feet on the

stimp meter and sometimes not. In addition sometimes they have been at an acceptable level of firmness but at

present they are too soft and the surface is too wet . Cultural practices have been reviewed this year compared to

the past couple of years and it appears that the current situation relates largely to the discontinuance of the prac-

tice of sulphuric acid injections through nightly watering. In the past injected sulphuric acid was required in our

soils in order to enable the plant to be as healthy as possible. This process was eliminated this year due to evi-

dence of higher than desirable sulphur levels and was replaced with spraying and hand watering of other acids.

This new process while safer, appears to have built up an unwanted layer of contaminate causing the greens to not

flush properly and hold too much water. To remediate the situation the frequency of topical applications will be

increased to better flush contaminants and ultimately produce increased water movement.

In general, maintaining a schedule for “cultural practices” (i.e. the maintenance of the turf, fairways, greens,

roughs etc.) is very difficult in our short season because it is often disrupted by weather and golf events. This

year to date in excess of 16 inches of rainfall has occurred with several days in a row downpours. Significant

downpours typically result in about 10 days of “catch up” with things like verticutting and top dressing to get

back on track and during this period the surface of the greens can change.

The key to maintaining green speed and providing healthy turf is a science that differs from course to course.

Management is seeking additional advice for the best long-term solution from the USGA Turf Advisory Service -

the recognized impartial expert body on the topic – during their visit to the Club in late August. In the interim,

the team is working hard to reverse the inconsistency and go back to the high standard excepted by management

and the membership.

2) Fairways

Keeping our fairways in good shape is a challenge. In the past, the fairways were rarely aerated and the plan for

this year has been to punch on a monthly basis. There is agreement amongst management, the board and mem-

bership it is not ideal to remove summer play rules when the season is so very short. However, maintaining the

health of the turf by relieving soil compaction which can lead to shallow root growth and disease if not managed,

is essential. Unlike other courses, even in Regina, the Wascana is on gumbo soil and it makes the aeration of the

fairways even more critical. Management recently used a new aeration technique referred to as a shatter-tine to

better aerate the fairways. “Shatter tine” units employ additional movement of the tines besides a straight in-and-

out motion. This loosens a much greater volume of soil than hollow tines that punch clean holes. Unfortunately

the schedule was disrupted in June by significant rainfall which then pushed the crew into early July and again

later in the month to accommodate weather to accommodate weather disruptions. Having said that, this is anoth-

er area where management will be seeking guidance on balancing the timing of proper care for the fairways with

minimizing disruption to the members.

Page 16: The Wascana Chronicle - August 2012

The Wascana Chronicle

Page 16

3) Maintaining the Rough

At times this year the rough has been longer than desired. There were largely two reasons for this:

a) Fertilizer was applied and unfortunately this was followed by a couple of days of downpours, then excessive heat

and humidity and the grass grew a lot; b) A rough mower broke down along with both turf vacuums at the same

time. Even with regular maintenance of equipment this sometimes happens and when it does the extra bulk of cut-

tings from cutting the fairways are blown to the rough but without the vacuums, the cuttings just sit there. With the

recent repairs to equipment, this situation appears to have been remedied; and c) Naturalised areas of the golf course

(i.e. left of the 12th green, right of the 14th fairway and the 15th green have been tired and unsightly and they were

identified as areas for renewal. These areas have been growing rapidly with the appearance of unwanted weeds and

as a result they are being cut and will be replaced with native grasses for long term beautification.

4) On Course Water Station

The old water stations were removed because water supply in an unrefrigerated container in the heat is considered

by Health Canada to be a health risk. Currently Iindividual water bottles have been positioned in a cooler at the 14th

tee and management will ensure that they are kept well stocked. A longer term solution for the future is being inves-

tigated.

The Course of Grounds Committee appreciates the feedback received from the membership, much of it extremely

positive. Board members, Course & Grounds Committee members, and management,, share the same objective as

the membership and are working diligently and responsibly towards the ongoing improvement of the Club.

General Managers Financial Update

I am pleased to report the club is off to a good financial start this year. To the end of June total

revenues are some $30,000 ahead of budget with total expenses some $20,000 under budget.

The overall net result is a positive variance of some $50,000 ahead of budget. We currently have 31

Share Applicants and 60 Graduate Share Applicants on our wait list. I am hopeful that with good

summer weather we can look forward to further good financial results.
