I have spent some time working on a plausible and hopefully correct background for Elizabeth Gallon, 2 nd wife of AussieAlexander. I suspect that when William and Elizabeth were nominated as her parent’s names on her death certificate there was a mistake made with her Mother’s name. I have trawled every available Birth, Death, Marriage and Census report and heaps of other family trees to formulate this hypothesis. I believe Elizabeth’s parents were William (AKA John) Gallon and Ann Armstrong, innkeepers of Wooler, which is about 3 kms from Earle where Alexander was living at the time. On the original of the marriage certificate, which I am still trying to down load from Scotland’s People, Wooler is written beside their signatures. The Censuses show that the Gallon family had a daughter named Elizabeth, of the right age. Working with maps and birthdates, I traced every John, William and Ann and Elizabeth Gallon. The only William and Elizabeth Gallon who had a daughter Elizabeth, were a couple whose daughter was 4 in 1841...possibly a mite young to be married and migrating in 1848.

Dear Fellow Members, The last 6 months have been very productive with many emails and quite a few letters form members. I have included the edited details of some because they really do demonstrate that there is still a vast amount of history to uncover and that our history is still being made by all of us today.

Following is an email from Julie Martin 24/8/08

I am about one third of the way through referencing with primary sources where possible the information

from the AWFS CD “History of the Waughs”. I have found some interesting extra info; for example

Alexander Paul A’Court Bergne, son of Dianna Holman Hunt was in the Secret Service in Britain, was a

noted writer and Broadcaster and after 9/11 was Blair’s government representative in the negotiations with

Afghanistan and all the other stans in Central Asia. He was an expert linguist and cultural advisor.

Dianna was noted for her memoirs (which I would love to get my hands on) and had obits in both the

London Times and the New York Times. Andrew Scott Waugh surveyed Nepal and Northern India, and

when with Sir George Everest, calculated that Everest was the world’s highest Mountain and named it after

his friend... I personally will refer to it as Waugh Mt from now on.

One of Dr John Neill Waugh’s daughters, Magdalen, went down with the Quetta in the Torres Strait and a

fellow passenger who was rescued, along with her diary, records that Miss Waugh was conversing with the

Captain in the Salon, before that passenger moved to the Deck and the ship hit the only rock needle they’ve

found in the Strait.

I have spent some time working on a plausible and hopefully correct background for Elizabeth Gallon, 2nd

wife of “Aussie” Alexander. I suspect that when William and Elizabeth were nominated as her parent’s

names on her death certificate there was a mistake made with her Mother’s name. I have trawled every

available Birth, Death, Marriage and Census report and heaps of other family trees to formulate this

hypothesis.

I believe Elizabeth’s parents were William (AKA John) Gallon and Ann Armstrong, innkeepers of Wooler,

which is about 3 kms from Earle where Alexander was living at the time. On the original of the marriage

certificate, which I am still trying to down load from Scotland’s People, Wooler is written beside their

signatures. The Censuses show that the Gallon family had a daughter named Elizabeth, of the right

age. Working with maps and birthdates, I traced every John, William and Ann and Elizabeth Gallon. The

only William and Elizabeth Gallon who had a daughter Elizabeth, were a couple whose daughter was 4 in

1841...possibly a mite young to be married and migrating in 1848.

Julie also sent a 55 page history with extensive collated detail on “Aussie” Alexander Waugh and his family

tree. Anyone interested I can email a copy to you. If you want a printed copy let me know and I can post one

out to you. Neville.

In the last 2 editions I had information from Nancy Fox, in both cases she wrote to tell me that one of brothers had died and again this newsletter the same news about another brother. Nancy has sent a brief outline of Mac’s life and it again gives us an insight into a time and lifestyle that is fast receding.

Albert Mackenzie Oxley Waugh 21/3/1927- 5/8/2008 – Mac

as he was always known – was the youngest child of six

children of Gordon and Matilda Waugh of Mt. Mackenzie,

Tenterfield. He was named after their property and also his

great great Grandfather – John Oxley who was Surveyor-

General of Australia in 1812.

He was born in Tenterfield in 1927 and lived at Mt. Mackenzie

all his life. His education was from the Correspondence School.

He developed a well-mannered intelligent and practical

personality.

In his childhood he was a fair curly-haired industrious little

fellow – always trying to make something with which to play,

be it a high chair from a wooden butter box for himself of a

billycart to be driven down the hill – sometimes pulled by a

goat. His father came to the rescue to assist him with his

projects when necessary.

As a grown man he was generous to a fault, always there to

assist everyone, regardless of the situation or task. It was his

pleasure. He loved a game of cards.

He assisted on the farm as well as train droving with his

brothers to various eastern states of the country. He enjoyed working in shearing sheds throughout the

district. Where his workmates nicknamed him ‘Biscuit’ – he always had a packet of biscuits in the car to eat

– in case it broke down. He was a very thoughtful ever ready person.

In later years he made and sold large numbers of comfortable rocking chairs, which he turned on the wood

lathe and beautifully upholstered in rich tapestry; one of his many self-taught achievements.

His sporting interests were cricket, football and tennis which he played until recently. He loved gardening,

especially his lovely rose garden. Another interest was poultry, as a child he had pet bantams – and later he

enjoyed keeping some Isa Brown hens as a hobby. All domestic and farm animals were dear to his heart.

He was very proud of his ‘professional’ skills in cooking, especially scrambled eggs with his variety of

added ingredients!

He was predeceased by two brothers – Eric and John in 2007. Now very sadly missed by his brother Bill

and sisters Nancy and Monica. Also his wife, Una – whom he married in 1952 – their four children,

Suzanne, Marilyn, Lorraine and Kelvin and their families.

A truly wonderful Brother, Husband, Uncle, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.

Lovingly remembered by all his family and a wide circle of friends.

Cousins News: Research item: Alexander William Waugh 1850 to 1907 I am trying to find information on Alexander Waugh 1850 to 1907. He is our great Grandfather and I can find virtually nothing about him. The youngest child of ‘Aussie” William Waugh, Alexander was a mining engineer and worked in the Newcastle area. He married Eliza Dargue in 1878. Eliza ran a maternity “hospital” in Grafton and apparently Alexander spent a lot of his time travelling between places where he worked and Grafton. It was while making one of these trips that he caught pneumonia and consequently, as his death certificate indicates died of heart failure. Alexander and Eliza had 5 children: Vivian, Mary and Sarah Ann (twins) 1882, Sarah Ann(2) born 1884 and Elsie. Only 2 lived, Mary (our grandmother) and Vivian, to adulthood. Alexander is buried at Capertee (Near Scone in NSW) but the location of his grave site at the cemetery is not known. If anyone in the family has any information or other photos of this Alexander I would appreciate it.

Lester “Larry” Howard Maloney 20/03/1929-17/02/2008 Larry was the son of Fred Maloney the youngest brother of our grandfather, John. Fred married Jane Beal and the 4 children: Eileen, Lance, Lester (“Larry”) & Lima were bought up in around the Tweed. Eileen died in 1989. Lance and Lima both now live in Brisbane. Lima lived in Murwillumbah for sometime in the late 1060’s & 70’s and became great friends with mum so a number of you would have met her then. Larry was born in Murwillumbah and spent the first 10 years of his life in Tyalgum until the family moved to a farm

at Main Arm, Mullumbimby then to Rosebank (near Lismore) where his mother, Jane Beal, died in 1944. Lester became “Larry” after he left school and went working on stations in Queensland. Fellow workers decided that Lester was not quite the right name for him and the change stuck He later worked at the steelworks in Newcastle. He returned to Qld and back to work in the south western region again on stations. When the building boom began in

Brisbane he worked building Garden City and stayed on with the maintenance crew until his retirement. He had been separated from his wife Maureen for 10 years, she lives in Perth. James “Jim” Edwin Maloney 1/12/1926-1/08/2008 James was my second cousin, he is of the same generation as my children, that is in relation to our common ancestor Martin Maloney. He is descended from James (brother of Fred, in the story above, and our grandfather John) Jim’s father was James Thomas Maloney 1903-1957 and his grandfather was James Maloney, born in 1873, the third child and eldest son of Martin Maloney and Harriet Morgan. Jim lived in North Queensland and his funeral was at Tully. I have included a page with the details of the linage of the James Maloney line of the family. Jim’s daughters Margaret and Esther “Mary” are twins. Mary lives in Cardwell and she visited Murwillumbah in the early 1980’s looking for members of the Maloney family. She stayed a night or two with mum and dad. I met her a few years ago when I visited her sister Margaret and her husband when they lived in Brisbane.

Updating Family Information I have plans of updating and correcting my family history database and thought the time around Christmas with families tending to reunite it may be a good opportunity and an interesting activity to list all of the extended family many of you now have. I have included a printout, some 6 pages, that lists the decedents of John Maloney and Mary Waugh, if you could

take a pen to it and add and correct the information on your line. I will provide an updated list in a future newsletter, hopefully the next one. If anyone wants an editable copy of the list simply send me an email (address below). You can simply add dates and new generations and if you have the time some brief information on where they live and what they do or other bio information if you like. Photos clearly indicating who is who would also be appreciated. The copy can be sent to me at my address below or emailed to: [email protected]

Latest additions to the Jack & Ivy

Maloney line: They are listed under

Lisa and Peter Wotherspoon, the last on

the 6 page list enclosed. (Zac is holding

Pip and Meg is sitting in front of Zoe).
