By the time you read this, we will have made our way through the largest, busiest week and weekend of recent San Francisco history. Perhaps in all of SF history. We are having a hard time safely operating youth sailing, BAADS support, racing support, cruising support, and America's Cup course marshal participation with our current boats. We built our current fleet by buying old boats, and in the case of our chase boats, they were smaller boats with polluting 2-stroke engines. Thank goodness we didn't have anyone fall overboard when we used our 17-foot Zodiac to run race committee recently. A couple of our Lasers get so waterlogged that they are difficult to right when they capsize (my 12 year old daughter Grace nearly exhausted herself trying to right one that had filled with water inside the hull). Progressively we need to get newer boats and retire the older ones that are costing us a lot of money to maintain. In any case, it should be a fun party, with tempting America's Cup and Sunsail items amid our wonderful mix of vacation home stays, dinners, and excursions! Wendy Hanrahan has pulled together a terrific auction committee, and I wager they'll have some fun surprises up their sleeves. Remember, November 3rd. See you there, and see you on the water! ~~~ _/) ~~~ Paul V. Oliva, Catalina 310 Time & Tide

SPLICE THE MAINBRACE! by Hugh Coppen

It’s been a busy summer behind the bar – and now we’re right in the middle of our SF ‘summer’ – highlighted this year by the quadruple whammy of the Giants in the playoffs, the Niners at home, Fleet Week AND the ACWS! Gotta love our town! My column last month got ‘mislaid’ somewhere between me and the editor – we both apologize! In last month’s column, I gave a special shout out to all those wonderful OODs who volunteered to take extra shifts to open the Club midweek during the two weeks of the America’s Cup World Series in August. These are OODs who take their regular duty shifts every 8 or 9 weeks and yet they willingly stood up for these extra midweek shifts. And now they’re all doing it again for the October ACWS. Thank you! And we salute you! And thank you and the floor captains too for being so professional about requiring valid ID from all the guests who have visited us during this busy time so that, while we enjoy welcoming them, we stay within our ABC license rules about to whom we may, and may not, serve alcohol. Remember, if in ANY doubt, card ‘em! OOD Tip of the month: You’ll see that we have a whole lot more buttons on the bar screen of the POS than we used to. That’s because we’ve now added specific buttons for all our specialty drinks like Martinis, Manhattans, Margaritas, Dark & Stormys, Cosmos and so on, so you don’t have to guess our prices anymore!

PLUS… we have put a laminated ‘OOD Cheat Sheet’ behind the bar. On one side it gives you our basic price list. On the other, presto, all our specialty drinks AND how to make them!! Just trying to make your job as an OOD that much easier! As always, huge thanks to all our OODs, and the Hospitality Committee, for everything you do to make our Club the very best on the Bay! Splice the Mainbrace, y’all! ~~~ _/) ~~~

BAADS TO HOST 4TH

ANNUAL HERB MEYER REGATTA

by Christina Kho

The Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors’ 2012 Herb Meyer Regatta will be held on Saturday, October 20th to Sunday, October 21st in and around McCovey Cove, adjacent to AT&T Park and the South Beach Yacht Club. Sailing enthusiasts should come and participate or watch this exciting racing event, which is open to all sailors of Liberty, Liberty Servo, 303, and 2.3 Access Dinghy Classes. This regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in Racing Rules of Sailing. There will be five races on October 20th and four races on October 21st. Registration can be found on the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors website, (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dGRoRm1nZVFHWF9scVZuMmhUQW8yeEE6MQ), all requests should be received by October 12th. Entry Fee is $60 payable to BAADS. Note that the fee may be waived with proof of hardship. Volunteers are also needed and can sign up at the Herb Meyer Regatta 2012 page on the BAADS website (https://sites.google.com/site/baadssignup2/helpers- herbie-cup). "BAADS looks forward to the Herb Meyer Regatta each year, but this year is particularly exciting given BAADS' plans to host the North American Championship next year and Access Class World Championship in 2014. The Herb Meyer Regatta, named after BAADS' beloved Staff Commodore Herb Meyer, provides a fun and friendly way to show off the amazing racing skills of our sailors,” said Cristina Rubke, Commodore of BAADS. This annual regatta is named after longtime BAADS Staff Commodore and leader from Marin County, Herb Meyer. He was injured close to 20 years ago during a sailing accident, which left him paralyzed. Herb was a key component to the formation of BAADS and the use of access dinghies. Access Sailing has removed barriers for people with disabilities to sail with more ease. The award presentation for the Herb Meyer Regatta will be held on October 21st.

As regular as clock work a couple of them would shove off in a big rush as though they just heard about something real promising. I saw them do this several times. Seemed to me they were doing a lot of looking but not much finding. Going too fast, I imagine. “After all was said and done I don’t think they had much luck because they all up and left without pumping a drop of oil. Oh well, I hope they come back, they sure were fun to watch.” ~~~ _/) ~~~ Ray Hall DANCING BEAR

ROLEX BIG BOAT SERIES

ADDS MULTIHULLS by Paul Oliva

For centuries, sailing has been known for the stately progression of billowing white triangles and trapezoids across an azure sea. But 2012 may become known as the year San Francisco Bay

changed all that. Spurred by the America's Cup switch to high-speed catamarans, the West Coast's most prestigious sailboat race, known as the Rolex Big Boat Series, for the first time allowed speedy multi-hulled boats to enter the racing, which finished Sept. 9th .

The move was like allowing turbocharged engines in motor sports. Dyed-in-the-wool sailors call it a move to the dark side. St. Francis Yacht Club Commodore Peter Stoneberg pushed that move. He raced aboard his ProSail 40

catamaran Shadow and ultimately took first among the multihulls. "The Rolex Big Boat Series is one of the premier events in the world, and having catamarans included in it for the first time is very exciting for us," said Stoneberg.

"You just can't beat the thrill and adrenaline of racing them on San Francisco Bay."

Stoneberg's boat, Shadow, is a ProSail 40 catamaran. In the St. Francis tradition, a finely detailed model of the commodore's boat is placed above the fireplace in the Club's Grill Room. Shadow is the first multihull to be honored in that location.

Shadow goes back to 1987, when four-time America's Cup winner Dennis Conner used it to train for his 1988 America's Cup win aboard his surprise 60-foot catamaran entry Stars & Stripes. Conner handily beat New Zealand's 90-foot traditional mono-hull boat. In those days, Shadow was part of a fleet assembled on San Francisco Bay by legendary sailor Tom Blackaller to promote grand prix catamaran sailing.

A new tradition: It is a battle, however, that goes back more than a century. In June 1876, one of the most successful boat designers of all time, Nathanael Herreshoff, entered a 33-foot sailing catamaran named Amaryllis into the New York Yacht Club's Centennial Regatta. After he beat all comers, Herreshoff won a U.S. patent for the design. But the powerful New York Club banned catamarans from racing. The ban carried across yacht racing for nearly a century. Multihull fans are still working hard to bring "the dark side" into the light. Bob Naber is staff commodore of the Bay Area Multihull Association and helped gain agreement on inclusion of catamarans in this year's racing. "It's a challenge to deal with boats of such divergent speeds and course needs," Naber said while gazing out at the dozens of boats racing together on the bay earlier this month. "Often time the easiest way to deal with that is not to give attention to multihulls. As a result, we have sat on the sidelines of one of the most premier regattas in the world and arguably the premier venue in the world. It's exciting, it's quite a high to be included." Some of the biggest names in multihull racing descended here for the races, including top designer Gino Morrelli (Newport Beach) and Cam Lewis (Bangor, Maine), who helped Conner win the 1988 America's Cup. Shadow was one of six multihulls that raced in the Rolex series. They were among 66 boats entered in nine divisions spanning the most successful big boat amateur teams on the West Coast - from a 21strong fleet of 34-foot J105 boats on up to the 54-foot Swiftsure II owned by Sy Kleinman (Saratoga), who at age 91 is the longest-running skipper in the IRC-A division. Rolex becomes sponsor: Sailed since 1964, the St. Francis Yacht Club Big Boat Series added Rolex Watch U.S.A. as a title sponsor in 2005. Six specially engraved Rolex timepieces are traditionally awarded to winners of six perpetual trophies. It's part of an action-packed fall for fast boats that was kicked off and will be capped by America's Cup World Series racing in 45-foot catamarans in August and October.

(Oliva continues)

And high speed three-person skiffs were back for their crash-and-burn racing in the annual Nespresso International 18 Skiff Regatta in August. Then the skiffs joined speedy craft of all sorts - from kite boarders to windsurfers to exotic and experimental craft such as world speed record holder l'Hydroptère DCNS - for the Ronstan Bridge to Bridge drag race Aug. 31. The No. 1-ranked world champion, Johnny Heineken (Larkspur), was first to finish the Golden Gate to Bay Bridge course in a record-setting 14 minutes, 40 seconds.

Earlier in the day, the French hydrofoiling trimaran l'Hydroptère DCNS established a 1-mile speed record initially reported as more than 43 mph as it flashed past Alcatraz with all three of its hulls lifted out of the water on hydrofoils and churning mist streamed out behind. America's Cup teams are now testing such hydrofoils for racing next year. Talk about turbocharging.

And if you happened to see Stoneberg's silvery Shadow, the bright orange-hulled BridgeRunner and other fast catamarans zipping around a yellow cylindrical buoy near Fort Point that was Naber's suggestion. The buoy is named in the memory of Blackaller, who died of a heart attack in 1989.~_/) ~~

Sailing history: Thirty-nine years ago, when Milt and Carolyn were newlyweds, at Carolyn’s request he gave up white water river rafting then together they found sailing and have owned one boat or another since. They have cruised the BVI, New Zealand and the Puget Sound. Milt crewed in the Ocean Racing Series during the early 90’s (rail meat and spinnaker trimmer) and participated in SBYC’s Friday night racing in the late 90’s. DIRECTOR Steve Severaid Member since 2010

Boat Name and location: After You

Club Interests: Current SBYC Vice Commodore, OOD and Hospitality Committee

Candidate Biography: Steve Severaid is excited to be considered for a board position in 2013. Steve is currently serving as Vice Commodore and is an active member of the Club. His 5 1/2 year old daughter Suri can often be found twirling through the Club. Steve is a boater and has a Searay Sundancer slipped in South Beach harbor, which he enjoys as often as possible. Steve's love of boating and the boating community led him and his wife Nazy to want to become members of the Club. Before becoming a member he used to gaze longingly at the balcony filled with people and laughter as he was coming

up from his boat. He realized that he needed to be part of this little community and has enjoyed making many new friends and being of service to the Club and it's members.

Steve moved from Southern California where he had lived most of his life to San Francisco ten years ago to further expand his business. Steve is a principal with The Greenspan Company Adjusters International. Greenspan is a company that works on people's behalf when they have a major property insurance claim. Steve's current capacity as Vice Commodore uniquely qualifies him to add to the strength of the board.

By being involved in the management of the Club over the past year Steve will bring that day to day experience with him in understanding the past and aiding in the future. He is looking forward to continue serving the members of the South Beach Yacht Club.

DIRECTOR

Gerard Sheridan Member since 2000

Boat Name and location: Tupelo Honey Club Interests: Prior SBYC Board Member, Membership Controller, and Racing

Candidate Biography: Gerard Sheridan, a North Beach resident and originally from Ireland, can't recall the exact year he joined SBYC but it's most likely around 2001. That coincided with the moving of this first boat, Setanta, a Baltic 42DP, over from Berkeley Marina where he regularly ploughed through the mud along

the Berkeley Pier at low tied to get in and out of the Marina. So he was delighted to move to South Beach and especially for Friday Night Racing, which was his primary motivation for joining SBYC and is a significant part of what he loves about the Club and the camaraderie that flows from it.

He served on the Membership Committee for two years, the last as head of membership in 2008. As part of that role he sat on the SBYC Board and got to see how things worked and how long-term planning and decisions were made for the ongoing benefit of the members and the Club's overall financial health. He's practical and has a common sense (his common sense, naturally) approach to problem solving and decision-making. After a four-year break from the board, he feels the time is right to contribute his time and energy to the Club that's given him so much enjoyment over the last decade or more. An avid racer, he races his Elan 40, Tupelo Honey, in the Friday Night Series and at various other IRC and PHRF regattas on the Bay. Sometimes he even wins but he and his merry crew always enjoy themselves. He's also a member of St Francis YC. He earns a crust as VP of Sales for a telecom Software Company selling to the wireless carriers of North America. He believes the Club has matured nicely in recent years and is working very well. The overall 'user experience' is very good. The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in most areas. But things change and peoples expectations change and evolve and he'd welcome the opportunity to be part of the team that helps navigate the issues and decisions that keeps SBYC the special Club that it is today.

DIRECTOR

Rob Swenson Member since 2009

Boat Name and location: N/A Club Interests: Currently serving on the SBYC board as a Director, Head of the small boat sailing program

Candidate Biography: Rob Swenson is a sailing enthusiast that has been boating for over 20 years. He started dingy sailing at 7, raced the Mid-Atlantic YRA series in southern New Jersey for many years, raced for the Penn State Sailing Club, crewed on many big boats on both coasts and has skippered and crewed on many several boats out of the SBYC since

becoming a member in 2008. Rob has also entered and skippered a Catalina 34 “HapyDazAgn” into the Club’s Jazz Cup for the past 3 years.

Since becoming a member of the SBYC, Rob has helped start a small boat sailing program primarily focused at getting adult members of the Club out on the Club’s Lasers and FJ’s. In 2012 Rob joined the board of directors and has been a member of the Strategic and Long Range Planning committee. Rob is very interested in continuing on as a director so that he can help preserve the Club’s founding values while helping to drive the Club’s on the water presence forward.
