Set in 40 acres of beautiful countryside the Weald and Downland

Living Museum is a special place. We rescue homes and buildings

from destruction and re-build them here in the heart of the South

Downs National Park. Through our buildings, gardens, living exhibits

and events we tell a 1,000-year story of rural life and those who

lived it. We offer a gateway to the past and bring that past to vibrant

life.

Each year we host dozens of events and the largest amongst them

are our Big Weekenders.

The Big Weekenders transform the museum into a thriving bustle of

rural crafts, traditional countryside demonstrations, expert talks,

family fun and artisan makers not to mention show ground parades

and competitions.

For 2019 we will stage four Big Weekenders, one for each season

and as an additional fifth event, a one day Rare & Traditional

Breeds Show.

Each event attracts 6,000 visitors rising to over 12,000 for our

Winter Big Weekender, the Christmas Market. On the following

pages you’ll find all the information you need to become part of the

fun and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in

touch.

Autumn

The Good Life: Revive, Recycle, Restore 5/6 May 2019

Rural communities were the masters of upcycling before it ever became

fashionable; Making and mending, reusing and repairing and looking to nature for

home grown remedies were all central parts of countryside living. Taking a leaf

from the Repair Shop, filmed on site at the Museum, our two-day Spring

Weekender will be an opportunity for visitors to learn how to bring a new lease of

life to their possessions, hear from experts, uncover the path to sustainable living

and have a go at their own projects.

Saddles & Steam: Horse-Power to Horse-Power 17/18 August 2019

Celebrating every mode of transport from our four legged friends to the invention

of the combustion engine, this two day Summer hit will be packed with horse

displays, an army of steam engines, World War vehicles and classic cars to name

just a few; not to mention lots of family fun with miniature steam engines, model

boats and a crammed full arena display.

Pasture to Plate: Farming, Food & Horticulture 5/6 October 2019

Our Autumn Big Weekender will focus on the fabulous farming, food and

horticultural heritage of the South Downs. This show will feature traditional working

demonstrations, including heavy horses and vintage tractor ploughing, a

horticultural show and pop-up demonstration kitchens where you can see local

chefs prepare seasonal dishes alongside a plethora of local producers and artisan

makers.

Winter Christmas Market 22/23/24 November 2019

Our Christmas Market has become one of the must-attend markets in the region

welcoming over 12,000 visitors over three days. Well over 150 stands represent

the best from local crafters, artists and makers and the entire Museum is taken

over with every ones of our historic buildings and houses playing host to the

festivities. It is a truly special festive experience.

“I could not be more happy. Everything was brilliantly organised

and all of your staff and volunteers were great. I had nothing but

brilliant feedback for all of the visitors with many saying it was

the best [event] they have been to, how wonderful everything

looked and how stunning the setting was.”

Rare & Traditional Breeds Show 14 July 2019

The Rare & Traditional Breeds Show is back at the Museum for 2019! The

event is a formal part of the livestock calendar. Hundreds of smallholders

and farmers travel from across the UK to show their animals and take part

in the event’s formal showing classes.

The Rare Breeds show is unlike any other event at the Museum. Through it

we play a active role in the modern day farming community and celebrate

the breeds that, once prolific in the region favoured for their quality and

taste, have become a rarity.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see the judging in action, meet the

farmers and perhaps be inspired to start their own smallholding. Alongside

this will be hands-on activity with bags of family appeal and stalls to

provide everything you may need for a fun day out or a new life as a

smallholder.

To add to the magic of our events we use our historic buildings wherever we can. Our

events therefore offer a mix of location either in purpose-built marquees, historic

houses, or an outdoor pitch where you bring your own gazebo, horsebox or whatever

takes your fancy!

For those who don’t know the Museum, below are some examples of the houses you

could find yourself in.

Trade Stand Locations

Court Barn

This timber-framed barn was built in the late 17th

or early 18th century. It is a large open space with

period beams reaching up to the thatched roof. It

sits at the southern end of the museum nestled in

its own idyllic country setting complete with pond

and meandering pathway.

Walderton

This flint and brick house dates from the medieval

times with later modifications to the exterior

dated to the early–mid 17th century. It has a

central fireplace with a room on either side and is

regularly used for our schools groups.

North Cray

This building is a classic medieval hall-house with

four small bays and a large central hall. It dates

from the 15th century and sits within our central

market square.

Poplar Cottage

This building was probably the home of a rural

craftsman. It was built in the mid-17th century on

the edge of Washington Common. It has two

downstairs rooms with a fireplace in between.
