Wegradedalltherunsinthemiddleinto“blueruns”and“redruns”.Itwouldsoonbecomecleartoeveryonethatitisfarmoresensibletoworkyourwayupthecoloursthantobeginontheblackrun.Guideswouldtaketheirgroupstotheappropriaterunsandgiveadvicethatmatchedtherelevantexperiencelevelandenvironment.Advicewouldbeappliedeffectivelyandimmediately.

ThedefinitionoftheRedEntrepreneurissummedupbyJackieMason’squote:“Ihaveenoughmoneytolastmetherestofmylife,unlessIbuysomething.”Atthislevelyouaregeneratingsomepersonalincomebutonlyenoughtocoveryourcosts.

Rememberthatthisisnotabouthowmuchmoneythecompanyyouareworkingformakes–oreventhecompaniesorinvestmentsyouownmakes.Itisabouthowmuchmoneyflowsfromthesevehiclestoyoupersonally(oryourpersonaltrust)inadditiontowhatyoupersonallyspend.Forsomepeople,itissimplyamatterofgettingpaidmore,payingthemselvesmoreorspendingless.Yetwithsurvivorgogglesonit’sdifficulttoseethebenefitofthis.‘WhytakeastepupeverydaywhenIcanjuststayatgroundfloorandwaitfortheelevatortocome?’

Ifyouareatredlevel,howdidyougettothislevel?Byturningonyourcomfortswitchthemomentyouhaveenough,soyoubegintospendassoonasthereisenough.LikeInfraredlevel,thisisaleveldrivenbyasubconsciousthatwillsabotageyourprogresstheminuteyouare‘doingOK’. WhiletheInfraredLevelisnotsustainable(youcannotbenegativeindefinitelywithouteventuallygoingbankrupt),theRedLevelwillensurealifeofconstantbudgetingwheremoneyfeaturesinallofyourlife’sdecisions–whereitwillbeaconstantconstraintonyourlife.Frankly,thislevelismoredangerousthanInfraredasitjustkeepsongoing.Ifyouchoosetochangeandmoveuptherainbow,itrequiresachangeinbothcommitmentandactiontodelivervalue in excess of what you are consuming. Inthepastitwaspossiblewithenoughhardworkandenoughpromotionsoverenoughyearstoretirewithenough.Intoday’sfastmovingeconomythatisnolongerthecase.AWorkermustcontinuetoimprovethemselvestostayemployable.Evenso,youcanchoosetoremainOrangeLevelyourentirelifeandprovidedyoustayemployableyoucanprovideforyourfamilyandyourself.

In1976,YunuswasworkingwiththeBangladeshgovernmentonsocialprojectswhenonavisittooneofthepoorestvillagesofJobrahecameacrossentrepreneurialwomenstrugglingatsurvivorleveltoruntheirbusinesses.Theywereborrowingfromloansharksatsky-highinterestrates,andhesawanopportunitytosupportthembybeingthemiddleman.

Whilekeepinghisjob,heexperimentedwithhisownmoney,usingUS$27tomakehisfirstloanto42women.Whentheypaidhimbackwithinterest,heknewhehadfoundaprofitablewaytohelppeoplemoveoutofpoverty.Withlittleofhisownresources,heputinhistimevisitingBangladeshbankstotapintotheirflow,andfinallypersuadedJanataBanktoloanhimenoughtolendtomorewomen,andextendhisproject.

IttooksevenyearsofworkasthemiddlemanbetweenbanksandthesmallentrepreneursforYunustobuildupatrustedreputationinBangladeshasthemicro-financingman.By1983,hehad28,000micro-loanmembers,anditwastimeforhimtoestablishhisownenterprise,whichhecalledGrameenBank(whichmeans‘VillageBank’inBangladeshi).
