SJ at the Capital. Last week, Mrs Lessard led 60 senior Civics students to the State Capital in Hartford for a citizen’s eye view of Connecticut politics. The tour included a walk through the Capital and the legislature, and a personal meeting with State Representatives Perillo (Shelton-R) and Rose (Milford-D). From the gallery, they watched the action on the House floor as the legislature considered bills on minumum wage, Sunday liquor sales, and mandatory heart screening for newborns. In turn, the House recognized the students, and commended the State Championship Basketball team.
St Joseph the Worker meets Bishop Lori the worker. We hosted the Archbishop-elect of Baltimore on Tuesday. Bishop Lori celebrated his eleventh and last mass with the students, who sent him off with three rousing prayer-cheers to St Joseph, and a crystal cruet set to remind him to keep us in his prayers daily. The students also presented him
with a check for $500 to assist with his chairitable work. In turn, he announced the In Caritate Servire awardee, Keirsten Lynch. The scholarship recognizes a junior who has demonstrated exemplary Catholic leadership and extraordinary Christian service. Bishop Lori also took time to meet with student leaders and reflected on his years as preist and servant to the Diocese of Bridgeport. He conlcuded his visit with a hard-hat tour of the acdemic center. He said with a touch of pride that St Joe’s is the only diocesan high school in New England that is expanding. Pax et bonum, Episcopus.

Yearbook Accolades. SJ 2011 edition, Branching Out, picked up a national design award from Jostens Publishers. It will be among the elite few to be featured in the 2012 Gotcha Coverd Look Book, which celebrates the best of the best in innovative yearbook design. Said staff moderator Cindy Richter, “I am delighted by this honor: The yearbook class and club members spent countless hours creating this book. It is great to see that their hard work was appreciated by the judges.” Our thanks to Staff Moderators Lisa Russell and CIndy Richter, and the student staff led by editors Allison Spagnuolo and Nicole Terrell.
In Fair Verona, where we lay our scene. Mrs Sorrentino is a magician when it comes to classroom transformation, but is never so clever than in Spring with the Shakespeare recitations. The freshmen were narrowed down to eight worthy orators, with Lars Pedersen taking first, and Vienna Corello-Soares placing second. Zane
Lynch introduced the Bard to the 21st century with a creative interactive white board presentation on the Seven Ages of Man from As You Like It. Deuk Hwa Noh, demonstrated his international iambic pentameter proficiency with the same melancholic treatise. Great work, all.
Tables options are disappearing. It is time to act. Reserve your space now. We all know the routine that goes with sitting down to Sunday dinner. We hear the table being set. We smell the aroma wafting out of the open oven. We hear the third or fourth call to get ready. Don’t wait for that gut wrenching silence that indicates the family has given up on you, abandoned you to the couch, and is digging in without you. Silent and Live Auction items sampler: Original artwork, a private tour of the Met, A Walk-on guest appearance on Weeds, including lunch with actor Kevin Nealon; a signed script and tickets to a show taping of your choice (Ellen, Conan, or Jay), all expenses paid!; top local restuarants
and services; personal & home Wellness packages; relaxing getaways to Palm Beach, DC, Vermont, Indiana and the Tri-State Area. Sporting memorabilia and prized tickets.
Really, get off the couch now! visit: 50th Anniversary Gala.
Courageous Parenting 101. Let’s not pretend that only “bad” kids do drugs. Drugs enter into today’s world from many differnt angles: doctors, pharmacies, medicine cabinents. They beset high achievers as well as the disaffected. The ambitious as well as the depressed. There is no darkness but ignorance; and ignorance is no excuse. There are 3 Tuesday sessions remaining: May 8th, 15th and 22nd at 6:30pm in the library. Make the time to save a life. For more information, please contact Kathleen Seperack, school Social Worker, at 203-378-9387 x457 or [email protected]
