The 3 MsMay Day, Mother’s Day and Memorial

Day... Not to mention graduation formany, May has 3 main special days to cele-brate.

First comes May Day on May 1, related tothe Celtic festival of Beltane and theGerman festival of Walpurgis Night. Theearliest May Day celebrations appeared iththe festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of

flowers. May Day may bebest known for its tradi-tion of dancing around themaypole, crowning of theQueen of the May or secret-ly leaving baskets full offlowers on the doorknobsof a neighbor’s house.

Then Mother’s Day pays tribute to motherseverywhere. First celebrated in 1908 as a resultof Anna Jarvis’ campaign to recognize the dayas a U.S. holiday, it is currently one of the mostpopular days to take mother “out” for lunch.Combining May flowers with lunch, mother’sare remembered at Goodseed Nursery. Seepage 6 for all the details.

Then Memorial Day is a whole weekend offun with great places to go, things to do andpeople to see. And this issue offers severalideas. For instance, Kings Island is now open, offering a full day of fun including rides, waterslides, entertainment and an experience withthe world’s largest dinosaur! Even the BradyBunch is returning for all the fun. See page 10.

We will be posting new and exciting places togo and things to do or people to see daily onFacebook. Don’t forget to “Like” our page andqualify for our next FREE weekend getawaygiveaway!

AGES is a full-out, blast-off, hold-onto-your-hairspray celebration

of the great rock music ofthe 80s, and you might bewondering–or, admit it,hoping– your kids willlove it as much as youwill. Well, we think theywill, but you should knowthat some of the costumes, dancing and languagemight not be appropriatefor kids under the age of13. We think teenagers willdig it, because it’s totallyawesome, sort of like amusic video brought tolife, complete with hotdancers and blazing guitarlicks. You know the matu-rity of your children, so we

suggest you use your best judg-ment about whether or not theshow is appropriate for them.Remember, if you do bring them, they’ll get to see you rockin’ likeyou did back in the day. Just soyou know. For the considerationof all patrons, children on lapsand/or babes in arms are not per-mitted at Victoria TheatreAssociation Star Attraction pre-sentations.
