Back to School! Maybe your child is heading back to school

and they are worried about being in a class-room with kids they don’t know, or they arestarting school for the first time. Going to anew school can be a traumatic experience justlike a new job is for us adults.

I thought my school days were long over. ButI am tickled to announce three of my manygranddaughters have moved next door fromanother town and I have had the pleasure ofhelping them get ready for their new school andwatching them come home so excited to sharetheir new experiences. One is in kindergarten andthe other two started preschool this year. Hereare six creative ways to help your mornings go a lit-tle smoother:

1. Getting the kids — and yourself — ready to goand out the door on time each morning can be amajor challenge. Get organized by picking outclothes the night before. Make sure backpacks areready with everything needed for the next day andplace right by the door you exit from.

2. Get a calendar large enough to include all newschool activities. Mark important dates (such asback-to-school night, parent-teacher conferenceweek and school holidays) on the family calendarahead of time so there are less conflicting appoint-ments.

3. Spend time each day with your child reviewingnotes from teacher, homework, and completedpapers. Start a new folder to store special creationsin so they aren’t scattered throughout the house.

4. Reading books together about the first days ofschool is a good way to start conversations aboutthe excitement and fears. Listen, listen, listen!

5. Start off the day with a healthy breakfast.Remember, it’s the most important meal of the day.

6. Family meetings: Review schedules, safetyinformation and discuss backup transportationarrangements.

Even if the kids are out of school, now is a greattime to reorganize the switch from summer to fallactivities and plan a weekend getaway!

Madora is a three piece rock

band from Central MO- made upof James Webb (guitar/vocals),Mikel Martin (bass), and MattHensley (drums/percussion).Madora is quickly on their way toestablishing themselves as aviable force in the rock scene ofMid-MO

The Many Colored Death is ahard rock trio based out of

Columbia, Missouri. With influ-ences ranging from Black Sabbathand King's X to Muse and RATM,they've forged a sounduniquely theirs, while notwholly unfamiliar.Described by one fan as "asilky mixture of 70's rockand early 90's grunge", The

MCD are drivenby a desire tomake real, honestrock music forreal rock musicfans. Featuring athundering rhythm sec-tion that would makeBonham and John PaulJones proud, and a gui-tarist/vocalist who is

equal parts Robin Trower, KingBuzzo, and David Gilmour, theirbrand of rock is both quiet andloud, dark and light. A veritableyin yang of sound and emotion.Soulful lyrics and melodies floateffortlessly over the poundingsurf of complex polyrhythms andgroove laden riffs.

Never Blue Avenue started in2008 with just four guys in a smalltown just wanting to play music.Meeting each other through dif-ferent bands Mark Loeber (guitar)and Josh Higgins (vocals/guitar)played together in a band calledTo End October. To End Octoberbroke up in 2007. Mark and Joshcontinued to play, finding MikeEllis (bass) and ShaqGolden(drums) in early 2008.Together the band played showsto little coffee "shacks" and even afew local headlining shows. Theystrive to be different than most

bands by having a mix of a fewdifferent styles of music to setsthem apart from their peers.

When German settlers began arriving in JeffersonCity 150 years ago, the intersection of Jefferson andDunklin became the commercial heart of theMunichburg neighborhood, and it still is today.

Old Munichburg is Jefferson City’s historic “SouthSide” neighborhood, and it’s well worth a visit! You’ll find first-class shopping, fine dining, lodging, and a big dose of German American hospitality!

Dating back to the nineteenth century, OldMunichburg is located within easy walking distanceof the Missouri State Capitol and downtownJefferson City—but once, it was connected toJefferson City by a single bridge over Wears Creek.Settled by German immigrants escaping their home-land’s economic and political upheavals, the neigh-borhood was soon filled with unique brick homes, businesses, and churches.

Many of the early immigrants had come from thetown of Münchberg, in Bavaria, and referred to theirnew home as “Münchberg” as well. Other Jefferson

Citians overheardthis term and mis-understood it as“Munichburg”—andthe name stuck!

Old Munichburgoffered the newlyarrived German immi-grant a place where hecould learn Americancustoms and practice hisEnglish among otherGermans, become aproud citizen of theUnited States, and alsoknow his childrenwould grow up with anappreciation for theirGerman heritage.

In the second halfof the twentiethcentury, older resi-dents passed on,many of theirdescendants movedaway, and the neigh-borhood sadly beganto deteriorate.

Today, OldMunichburg is beingrevitalized, build-ing on itsstrengths—sturdybrick buildings,enduring busi-ness centers,attractive, hilly,tree-lined streets,and a strongn e i g h b o r h o o didentity.
