Bill Simpson told us that the Pride of Workmanship Evening will be held on 13th April. So far he has 17 nominees. He encouraged all members to make attendance on this evening a “must”.

Steve Jones told us of the BBQ at the Leisure Centre last Saturday and the forth coming “Bare foot Bowls evening.”

Page 3: The Weekly Bulletin of the - Rotary Club of Wynnum & · PDF fileReport for Meeting ... Money for the completion of the African Hearts Vocational and Educational ... planning to re-introduce

He also advised that consideration for a reconstruction project Paunangisu in Vanuatu will not be considered until May 2016. Money for the completion of the African Hearts Vocational and Educational Centre in Uganda is yet to be considered.

Graeme Wescombe told us that the ANZAC Centennial State School Project is complete.

Abby from Uganda came to the rostrum and told us of the work of African Hearts. He spoke glowingly of the 500 student school in Kampala which is turning “street kids” into worthwhile citizens. He himself was once one of these and now heads up the whole organisation which is growing all the time. “Making a Difference” and he sincerely thanked our Club for supporting Ainsley Winten in her venture to establish the Vocational and Educational Centre which will train “tradesmen and tradeswomen”. This will change lives for the better in Kampala and will eventually spread throughout Uganda.

**** **** **** **** Chairman Jim Byrne introduced our guest Sergeant Chris Hebblethwaite. He told us that Chris had joined the Queensland Police in 1999.

Prior to this he was a soldier in the Australian army, serving in both a full time and part time capacity, first as an infantry soldier and then as an intelligence operator.

Chris has spent the majority of his career as a first response, general duties officer serving at Dutton Park and Morningside Police stations. During this time he relieved in the Dutton Park CIB and was a foundation member of the South Brisbane District Tactical Response Team.

ln 2007 Chris was seconded to the Australian Federal Police where he was appointed to the rank of Station Sergeant and posted to the United Nations in East Timor. There he served as the Operations Officer for the Cova Lima Police District and oversaw the planning and execution of security and humanitarian support operations.

On return to Queensland he was appointed the Officer in Charge of the Cannon Hill Police Beat. A position in which he maintained an operational policing response, but allowed him to undertake a number of community policing initiatives which improved engagement and reduce crime in his community.

Jim Byrne and Chris Hebblethwaite

Page 4: The Weekly Bulletin of the - Rotary Club of Wynnum & · PDF fileReport for Meeting ... Money for the completion of the African Hearts Vocational and Educational ... planning to re-introduce

ln 2011 he was awarded the Commendation for Brave Conduct Medal from the Governor General for the rescue of a women intent on committing suicide by gassing herself. The woman had discharged an LPG gas bottle in her home and left a number of electrical items running.

Chris entered the dwelling despite the gas and the explosive hazard, rescuing te woman and preventing further harm.

Chris was promoted to Sergeant in 2015 and was posted to the Bayside Crime Prevention Unit. A role he currently serves in now. He and his unit area responsible for implementing Crime prevention initiatives to help strengthen communities and reduce the impact of crime as well as providing support to victims of crime.

**** **** **** ****

Chris informed us that he was going to talk about Policing Overseas focusing particularly on East Timor.

Chris opened our eyes to the fact that in the United Nations peace keeping operations the Police and the Defence Forces work together. There is a very long history of this cooperation since the institution of the U.N. This Police Role is always carried out by the Australian Federal Police who are made up of officers from all States and Territory Police members.

Chris went on to tell us in a lot of detail his involvement in East Timor after that country became the smallest nation in the world. With the withdrawal of the Indonesian Forces all the intellectuals were either killed of moved to Indonesia.

The elderly were annihilated and all that was left were highly uneducated young people under 20 years of age. All the professional establishment were destroyed including hospitals and school and any useful building infrastructure, and the people who once operated in them.

The role of the U.N. was to begin training this population which proved to be a very difficult task. When the peace keepers of the U.N. left there developed another civil war and the next problem that had to be addressed was the position of internally displaced people.

Chris really opened our eyes to what had taken place in East Timor and the problems which still exist.

He indicated that Australian Federal Police have been involved in every peace keeping mission since 1946 in Cyprus.

Along with the Canadians and New Zealanders, Australians are the most respected and trusted peace

keepers in the world.

Chris went on to answer many questions at the end of which Jim presented him with our Certificate of Appreciation, indicating that on his behalf our Club would make a suitable donation to Rotary International to see that 10 underprivileged children would be immunised against poilo somewhere in the world.

Page 5: The Weekly Bulletin of the - Rotary Club of Wynnum & · PDF fileReport for Meeting ... Money for the completion of the African Hearts Vocational and Educational ... planning to re-introduce

President Christine who attended for the first time in many weeks after her illness, thanked Chris and indicated that the Club had really been impressed with the calibre f his presentation.

**** **** **** **** Christine then called the Bulletin Editor forward to present him with the Trophy for the Best Bulletin in the District for the second year in a row.

Sandy accepted this trophy telling the members that the trophy really belongs to the whole Club and he is but the vehicle through which it happens. He thanked all for their continuing support.

**** **** **** **** The President then invited Sandy to lead the singing of the National Anthem to close the meeting at 8.10 p.m.

**** **** **** **** The Editor is hugely impressed with the collection of paraphilia which Carol has accumulated in such a short time that he was compelled to take the following picture to show it off.

Once upon a time an Exchange Student would simply collect badges from other “Students” but now it seems that anything that can be attached in any way is “fair game”. A great collection which will have many wonderful memories attached to them.

From Mike Matthews: Hi all,

The Killarney weekend in July has proven very popular. We have already booked out all the cabins and also lots of caravan sites as well. For those members still wishing to attend the may be accommodation at the pub or at the sundown motel at Killarney.

Page 7: The Weekly Bulletin of the - Rotary Club of Wynnum & · PDF fileReport for Meeting ... Money for the completion of the African Hearts Vocational and Educational ... planning to re-introduce

The itinerary this year includes; Friday night dinner at the caravan park, including the traditional raffle and byo grog. Saturday we will head to Warwick for a day at the Jumpers and Jazz festival with lunch at the Chinese restaurant. Saturday night we will dine at the local pub afterwards the attend the local Bon fire and street festival. Sunday morning will see a group breakfast at the caravan park. Don Hann is gracing us with his presence this year and will be attending a local church service for those who would like to accompany him. I suggest all members of the grumpy table should go with Don to church. This year we are giving the Christmas theme a rest and therefore no presents required. Once I have the program for Jumpers and Jazz and the Bon fire I will firm up the weekends itinerary including any costs.

**** **** **** **** Community Service - Leisure Centre Sausage Sizzle - Saturday 12th March.

We again assisted the Leisure Centre with a sausage sizzle, this time for their Arts and Crafts Fair last Saturday.

Unfortunately the council has been in the throes of re-concreting the footpath immediately in front of the Leisure Centre building and whilst they advised the organisers that the large temporary fencing all along the front of the building would be down before the event, it was not, and the main front door could not be accessed. This diminished not only our trade ( which we were doing this for the Leisure Centre anyway ) but also the takings from their Fair.

Nonetheless, it all helps and the organisers were appreciative of our efforts and we are seen as being out there doing our bit in the local community.

I would like to thank those who assisted with set up, manning the sizzle and/or dismantling, namely Brian Pertzel, Dave Warren, Dave Tighe, Liz Tighe, Robyn Bunting Vicki Muskens Diane Jones and Chris Reynolds.

Job well done. Steve Jones **** **** **** ****

Chris Reynolds has been asked by Niels Coelingh-Bennink to relay some information about our Peace Fellow Sarah Cowley. You will remember that Sarah spoke to the Club a few months ago.

Sarah has now been confirmed as a Peace Fellow funded by the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation who have awarded her a 2016-17 Global Grant Scholarship to study at the University For Peace, Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica.

The start date will be August 2016 and the duration 12 months. Sarah’s host club in Costa Rica will be the Rotary Club of Heredia.

At the end of her 12 months Sarah will be required to submit a final report summarising her studies or research and the impact on her goals in the area of focus, an account of her Rotary and community involvement.

**** **** **** **** Ted and Kerry Davenport are again headed for Bustard Head Lighthouse. Ted has asked that the following be inserted in the Bulletin.

They will again be Volunteer Site Managers at this, the first lighthouse on the Queensland coast, which was established in 1868.

Page 8: The Weekly Bulletin of the - Rotary Club of Wynnum & · PDF fileReport for Meeting ... Money for the completion of the African Hearts Vocational and Educational ... planning to re-introduce

They will be at the Lighthouse from 21st April to 25th May, for the 10th consecutive year! There is every opportunity for friends and family to enjoy a day of adventure at Bustard Head Lighthouse and its history, the first Lighthouse on the Queensland Coast.

The Larc is an American amphibious vehicle, usually there are three Larc tours a week, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The Lighthouse is situated north of the Town of l770,pre-book your Larc “Paradise Cruise” prior to leaving home.

Contact the Larc office in the Town of 1770 by phoning 07 4974 9422.

Day 1: An easy 6 hour drive to Agnes Water and the adjacent Town of 1770, north of Bundaberg. Accommodation is available with a good range of options, including caravan parks, in both towns.. Very good restaurants are also available and a good motel, ie The Mango Tree Motel in Agnes Water, where we stay en route to and from the Lighthouse.(O7 4974 9132)

Day 2: Depart on the Larc from 1770 about 8 00 or 9 00 a.m., depending on the tide. Parking adjacent to the Larc office. The Larc travels 30 kms up pristine beaches with 4 tidal creek crossings and a great commentary on wild life and history. Then morning tea in a shade house followed by a very steep climb in the Larc to the Lighthouse. Usually about 30 passengers on the Larc. There you will be welcomed by Ted and Kerry!

On site you will see the most splendid views, be taken to the very interesting museum, the historic cemetery with sad tales of drowning, accidents and other tragedies etc. Then into the lighthouse with a steep climb up to the top to see the most beautiful scenery.

Then the return trip to the “morning tea area”, where there will be a generous lunch. Back into Jenny Lynn Creek to go to some very steep sand hills were the young at heart can whoosh down the sand!

Then a return trip to 1770, usually arriving about 4.00 p.m.

Have another great night out! The pub at Agnes Water has excellent food.

Day 3: Again an easy drive back to Brisbane with some great memories of a unique lighthouse, with a great deal of history! Enjoy !

P.S. We will only be at the Lighthouse on the above dates. You may wish to ‘phone us at the lighthouse during this time on 04974 2111 so we may enjoy the e anticipation of your company. Remember to book through Larc Tours, before leaving home.

If there is any information you need please call Ted on 0412 964 491.

N.B. We have no vested interest in any of the above ventures. Ted and Kerry **** **** **** ****

Q: Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?

A: Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called ‘pygg’. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as ‘pygg banks.’ When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a bank that resembled a pig and it caught on

Where have we gone wrong? This was in the Sydney Morning Herald. Age-old Deficiency

It’s about time the authorities did something about older drivers on the roads. For far too long older drivers have caused havoc as they hog the left lane, stick to the speed limits (even the road works limits), and stop at stop signs, causing great inconvenience and often preventing other from doing what they like. Another major concern is that by avoiding fines and demerit points, they are not doing their bit for the revenue of the State, and are therefore placing a further burden on younger drivers. Until older drivers an rove that they are proficient at weaving in and out of traffic, driving while texting, tailgating, using drugs or doing burnouts, they must be banned from holding a licence. Doug Money, Oak Park

**** **** **** **** Q: In golf, where did the term ‘Caddie’ come from?

A: When Mary, later known as Queen of Scots, went to France as a young girl (for education and survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scot game ‘golf’. So he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced ‘ca-day’ and the Scots changed it into ‘caddie’.

**** **** **** **** This story is perfectly logical to all males, well nearly all:

A wife asks her husband, “On the way home would you please stop at the shop and buy a carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6.”

A while later the husband walks in with 6 cartons of milk.

The wife asks him, “Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?”

He replied, “They had eggs.”

**** **** **** **** Believe it or not, you can read the following paragraph

“I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. Scuh is the phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mind.
