LITURGYANDMUSICNOTESENRICHINGOURWORSHIP JohntheBaptist, the “voice crying in the wilderness” prophesied by Isaiah, continues to bethe focus on this Third Sunday of Advent. The common theme and message of today’s hymnsis “pay attention—salvation is at hand!” The Sequence hymn, sung just before the reading ofthe Gospel, is a paraphrase of the words of Isaiah 40:1-3. The hymn following Communion isalso based on words of Isaiah, from chapter 21. It is sung to the stirring Welsh tuneAberystwyth (which some, incidentally, may recognize from its appearance in episode three ofthe current season of “The Crown”). The concluding hymn “Sleepers, wake!”, one of thegreatest and best-known German chorales, is a meditation on the expectation of divinedeliverance and hope for the life to come. Both text and tune were composed at the end of the16th century by Philipp Nicolai, a Lutheran pastor, during a terrible epidemic that took thelives of hundreds. The opening Organ Voluntary is based on the same tune, which J. S. Bachoriginally set to the words of the second stanza of the hymn, as part of his cantata based on thechorale. TheOffertoryAnthem captures the atmosphere of expectation at the heart of the Adventseason with elegant simplicity. It is a setting of a poem by Jan Struther, the pseudonym ofEnglish author Joyce Anstruther, best known as the author of “Mrs. Miniver.” The music is bythe contemporary American composer and Episcopal church musician Robert Powell.
