KOH Book Pick of the Week - The Essential Klezmer: A

Music Lover’s Guide to Jewish Roots and Soul Music, from

the Old World to the Jazz Age to the Downtown Avant-Garde

by Seth Rogovoy. This book makes a great introduction to a

musical form that is enjoying a renaissance. It documents

the history of klezmer from its roots in the Jewish communi-

ties of Medieval Eastern Europe to its current comeback in

America and Europe. Included also are descriptions of the

instruments, their sounds, and also the musicians who have

kept these sounds alive. An 80 plus page discography pro-

vides extensive lists of recordings, artists, and styles. It even

has a list of documentary films about klezmer, e.g., “In the

Fiddler’s House”, a 1995 film that follows Itzhak Perlman to

Poland where (escorted by leading musicians of klezmer re-

vival) he explores his Old Country musical roots. This book

has something for everyone, from newcomer to klezmer en-

thusiast and is available for check out at the KOH Li-

brary. Reviewed by J. Freund.

KOH Film Club - Broadway Musicals, A Jewish Legacy

Sunday, July 17th at 2pm. “Come on along, come on along”

for the best show in the town – celebrate the Jewish legacy

behind the best of modern American musicals with this

month’s DVD, Broadway Musicals, A Jewish Lega-

cy. Showcasing the talents of legends such as Berlin, Kern,

the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Hart,

Brooks and more, Joel Grey narrates this highly entertaining

documentary. A panel discussion with our own Broadway

aficionados and sing-along will follow the film. All are wel-

come. $5 suggested donation. For more information or to

RSVP contact Mehrnaz Halimi at 916 508-4571 or

[email protected].

Deitrich Bonhoeffer, Human Rights Activist with Steve

Rosenblum - Sunday, August 7th at 3pm. Join us in the

KOH Library and Cultural Center for Steve Rosenblum’s

fascinating presentation and discussion on Deitrich Bonhoef-

fer – Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. As Adolf Hitler and the

Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to

exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents

and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the

inside. One of these dissidents was Dietrich Bonhoeffer – a

pastor and author, known as much for such spiritual classics

as “The Cost of Discipleship” and “Life Together”, as for his

1945 execution in a concentration camp for his part in the

plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This program is open to the

community and there is a suggested $5 donation. Refresh-

ments will be served. For more information, please contact

Taliah Berger at 916-541-3720 or [email protected].

KOH Artists’ Exhibit

Our latest art exhibit, showcases two artists - Pamela Baron

and Pam’s husband, Ryan Mellinger. Pam is exhibiting three

collections in watercolors. Ryan is sharing part of his glass-

work collection. Please visit KOH to view the work of this

creative couple! Pam's beautiful and vibrant watercolor illus-

trations of plants and flowers, displayed in the colorful deco-

rated pots belonging to her Grandmother, Shola Ostrow

(z"l") are part of the "Grandma's Pots" collection. Her love

of home is apparent in the lovingly depicted “Houses” of the

SF Bay Area. Whimsical illustrations of animals, which

were the basis of the children's book, "A Troop is a Group of

Monkeys" are also part of her current exhibit. If you are in-

terested in hand blown glass, you will appreciate Ryan‘s viv-

idly colored collection of gently fluted bowls. All exhibited

art work is available for sale.
