A group of us from St Paul’s paid a visit yesterday to Shakespeare’s Globe on the South Bank. We discovered something of the history of Shakespeare’s plays in London and the story of the present theatre envisioned by the American actor Sam Wannamaker. In the background of the talk craftsmen and set designers were busily engaged in preparing the stage for the forthcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. Watching them at work reminded me of some of my favourite lines from the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard: “People have an idea that the preacher is an actor on a stage and they are the critics, blaming or praising him. What they don't know is that they are the actors on the stage; he (the preacher) is merely the prompter standing in the wings, reminding them of their lost lines.” Thinking along these lines the entire space in the church becomes the theatre of our salvation and is this is most fully visible in Standing in the wings HOLY WEEK SERVICES: Holy Week beginning today. I encourage you to clear your diaries and make space for the three great days which begin on Maundy Thursday. It is a costly commitment of time and a week characterised by the heights and depths of human nature; the summit of the Christian year from which all days and seasons find their touchstone. There is nothing quite so beautiful as the celebration of Holy Week with services that take us back to the very roots of Christian worship. It doesn’t really make sense to attend the first and last acts of Hamlet and skip those in between, so do all you can to make time for the days in between Palm Sunday and Easter Day – without the drama of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday the story of our salvation loses meaning. Come to the liturgies not trying to understand everything that is unfolding, but approach with an attitude of standing under and allow the Spirit of God to draw you into the mystery of redemption. And don’t forget to pay attention to the ‘space between the notes’; it’s in these spaces that the journey we make in the liturgy this week becomes our own. Fr Louis Darrant Members of the congregation are invited to make donations towards the Easter Flower fund in memory of their departed loved ones. Those commemorated on Maundy Thursday at the Altar of Repose and on Easter Day will be listed in the weekly sheet at Eastertime.
